Yep, I knew a dealer like this. He eventually died with all of these cards that he thought were worth more than they were! I am sure the same will happen with this guy.
Hey Chris! Great video. Love listening to your stories. Definitely frustrating about that dealer!! You're absolutely the most level headed guy that I listen to here on UA-cam!! Don't change a bit sir!!!!!
You still picked up some amazing cards! You're right it's definitely frustrating at times. Like you said, they are their cards, and they can ask what they want. But I bet he didn't sell much at the show!
Now you know why I set my Jayhawk pride aside and go to the shows in Columbia, MO. Just not a lot of vintage at the KC shows in my experience. Even less vintage at the show this weekend at Harrah's in KC.
Chris, you’re not whining. That dealer was out to lunch big time. Love your channel. I watch it all the time. We have very similar thought processes when it comes to cards. I just can’t afford some of the things you have. Nor have I ever been to a card show. Always wanted to though. Maybe Strongsville??
Congrats on those pick ups, Chris! Those Slaughters are my favorite but they were all real nice examples. People that are closed minded are very frustrating to deal with, it's cool to vent about it. Especially when you're considering big $ cards. Unfortunately these knuckle heads are everywhere. I'm happy to hear you didn't fold and moved on.
Hey Chris! These types of dealers are at every show in the country. They live in a state of delusion and there is no talking to them. I do my best not to even engage with them. Glad to hear you found some cards reasonably priced. I love those Slaughter cards.
Not many Vintage dealers at shows in Florida. Over 50% of the tables are Pokemon, but it helps me when I’m setting up at shows, being about the only Vintage dealer.
I'm trying to imagine which guy that was as I always go to that show. Probably one of the vintage guys I simply skip due to the pricing after seeing him consistently. Was very busy there on Saturday this time around and yeah, lot of trading card game dealers there for sure.
@ I'll have to introduce myself next time I see you at a show. I've casually talked with you a couple times in the past but didn't want to compliment your channel or anything. I want to help you stay the most humble man in the UA-cam community.
Hi Chris. With that type of dealer, it's best to just walk away. Sometimes you cannot reason with people. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the show.
Last show I went to in Pasadena was swamped. Tool an hour to get in at 2. Stayed until closing. Parking, show ticket and a beer was 40 bucks. 90% pokeman. That’s all I spent. Talked with some pokeman guys and had to shake my head. Met a friend who is now a dealer who sold me my 52 Topps mantle here in town. Was able to sit and spend 15 minutes with him. It was a great time. When you have the 2 wing men you do, a great time is every time! yogi don’t whine when he comes to a Charizard in the road. I’d walk right away from the dealer period.would not bother engaging him for a minute at best
How can someone not get frustrated at a dealer who doesn't know what he's doing? Why even waste the money to set up when you don't know what you're doing? How could you argue over a rookie card when there's actual concrete evidence in front of his face that it's not the rookie card? Oh man you were more reserved than I would've been even though I would've been respectful. Don't worry Chris those cards aren't going anywhere from that dealer… They'll accumulate dust before they sell. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your weekend. Also… Gorgeous pick ups. Very very nice.
chris- I understand your frustration. This happens a lot all the time at card shows by me. I have showed comps to dealers and it's like you are showing them Morse code. Hopefully you see those with a knowledgeable dealer next time
I think it's completely fair to be frustrated in a situation like that. Particularly since the mislabeled rookie card I would consider misleading at best. Agree to agree that might be the dumbest dealer on the planet.
Glad you held to your guns Chris....some dealers are nuts with their prices...makes you wonder who they actually sell to!! Anyway, glad you got the cards in the end. Be well
Yes, I know it’s frustrating when you just wanna buy a card and they will not deal or listen to reason. I had a guy that had a bunch of 1960’s Pete Rose cards in raw condition with obvious problems and he wanted gem mint 10 prices for them and would not budge.
Chris, you are going to meet people who will disregard both reality and logic. I have personally concluded it is simply impossible to persuade such people otherwise. If this frustrates you, I think your only remedy is to walk away. At my age I am trying to do everything I can to minimize my exposure to stress and anxiety. My parting words in such situations is usually something like, "I'm afraid we are not going to be able to do business today." Then I try to make a mental note of the dealer so I don't my waste time in the future. Your buddy, Tom, seems to maintain a pretty even keel. You do too!
To my shame, my first time setting up at a show, I sort of resembled that dealer. 😞 Not in ignorance, but in overvaluing / overgrading my stuff. Hey, he was only off by a decade on Doby's rookie card.
I don’t think you’re whining, there are soooo many delusional dealers. When I see prices like that, I typically just walk away and laugh after! Very nice pickups man!
Sounds like the dealer just had no clue. I would hope collectors targeting those cards will not fall for that guy’s nonsense. I like the cards you picked up though. Take care, Chris.
if a seller is only rude to me, i just won't make a deal with them. it doesn't affect anyone else. but a seller being grossly misleading like that? thanks for standing up for the rest of the hobby and trying to keep him informed
Are you crying? 😢 are you crying!?! 😭 there's no crying!...there's no crying in baseball cards 😂 Sorry you had an unpleasant experience at the card show 💙 We shot several vintage tables in our opening sequence of our video. We would have cast you in that scene somewhere 😂 Hopefully your arch nemesis wasn't in the opening scenes. Hope to see you next time for hot dogs at the show celebrating a 3-Peat for our KC Chiefs!
Nothing wrong with getting frustrated when you come before an ignorant card dealer. Dealers such as that give this hobby a bad reputation. I would have been equally frustrated. Thanks for the showcase. Have a great day.
I think the moment he explained his pricing for the Doubleplay card I would have been gone. There seems to be a certain intelligence threshold where folks cannot understand how they are ever wrong and no explanations can help them. He seems to be below that threshold. No point in getting frustrated but I know the educator in you couldn’t help but give it a try anyways.
Good morning, sir...yes you are whining, but that's okay...you are allowed to feel any way you want to feel...just keep this in mind...there are thousands of dealers out there...they all can't think alike...if they did it would be boring...I bet, after bringing his same cards to card show after card show, he'll lower his prices...thank you for your video.
The reason those 4 cards were still there for you is because they are grossly over priced. If he would have had them priced fairly, they'd probably already be gone.
I’d be whining myself but they are his cards and he can price how he wants I guess. Unfortunate that he can’t take any criticism or knowledge from someone like you!
Chris, you're whining, but justifiably. It's frustrating. I've found the following: - almost all dealers overestimate the condition of their cards. It's natural. We all do it, dealer or not. My best advice in that situation (it probably wouldn't help with a guy like that), is to ask him what condition he sees the card in and see if he'll justify his price that way. Then maybe you can point out some things he missed, in a nice way of course, to see if he'll acquiesce and come down a bit. - if someone at a show is referring to Beckett, you've 80% lost already. Beckett pricing is useless and a dinosaur. Referencing it, especially how you described it, just means they aren't in touch. - you're right, the cards belong to the dealer and two factors are 1. their willingness/need to sell and 2. how much trouble it was for them to set up. If they travel to different shows and have expenses, they should be more likely to move cards. If they're more local and doing so as a hobby, that potentially kills their motivation. - I loved his comment about "one is for sale for $1,000". The only time that matters is if someone is patient enough, on a card you don't see everyday, to wait for a dummy to come along and pay it. Almost impossible to win there. It's completely irrelevant, as you stated. - I find similar situations when I run across an older dealer (I'm older too), who is proud of their collection and doing it more for fun. And almost always selling vintage cards ungraded. A buddy of mine went into a shop recently and looked at a 50s card. A PSA comped at around $250-$300 (high side). This card was clearly more of a 3, maybe a 4 on the best day (rounded corners, etc). The shop owner had is priced at $550 and wouldn't budge. See most of the above. ha ha - sometimes you just can't win! So whining is just fine. We have to get our frustrations out somehow! Also, love the cards you did pick up, especially the Slaughters. You obviously have a great eye, as all are beautiful cards. Congrats. The day was not wasted!
I don't feel you were "whining" rather sharing a negative experience, Chris. Sometimes we need to see these things that can prepare others for what they may see. We like to keep the hobby fun, but this shows the business side of it as well, so others may see this and just know that some are in the hobby for money & profit, not necessarily for the fun, history, and thrill of the chase of cards. Thank you for sharing the collection of what you like.
You’re whining Chris because you’re letting something you have no control of have emotional control over you. Once you concluded he was not going to budge…move on. Frustrating in the moment? Sure but you’ll find those cards again. 👍
You were absolutely correct Chris! The guy simply isn’t living in reality. It is his.loss!!! So be it…
Gave a video like. I would have been frustrated too. Thankfully, most dealers I've interacted with want to move cards instead of show them.
I have to give you credit for trying to educate him. Most people would have walked away.
You still picked up some amazing cards! You're right it's definitely frustrating at times. Like you said, they are their cards, and they can ask what they want. But I bet he didn't sell much at the show!

Tough when the guy’s living in an alternate universe! I would have felt same way
Congratulations on the beautiful pick ups!!! Sorry to hear that you had to deal with an uneducated dealer that brought cards to show and not sell.
Hey Chris! These types of dealers are at every show in the country. They live in a state of delusion and there is no talking to them. I do my best not to even engage with them. Glad to hear you found some cards reasonably priced. I love those Slaughter cards.

Just walk on my friend, just wasting your own time and happiness!
At least you have card shows near you. Very few around here. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I'm trying to imagine which guy that was as I always go to that show. Probably one of the vintage guys I simply skip due to the pricing after seeing him consistently. Was very busy there on Saturday this time around and yeah, lot of trading card game dealers there for sure.

Those 3 cards in that condition can be found for less than 100 total raw. Poor guy is delusional.
Glad you held to your guns Chris....some dealers are nuts with their prices...makes you wonder who they actually sell to!! Anyway, glad you got the cards in the end. Be well
He’s close on the Doby, it’s a 10th year card.
Some people just dont know cards like they think they do. It wont work out for them in the long run.

I think you should've flipped the tables! 😅 😅 😅
good to hear from you

Beautiful pickups. You can’t fix stupid
Sounds like the dealer just had no clue. I would hope collectors targeting those cards will not fall for that guy’s nonsense. I like the cards you picked up though. Take care, Chris.
Some dealers are just delusional and out of touch. Those are best to just pass up and go to the next one. All those are cards you can find elsewhere.
It is a wonder that dealer sold anything! When I see tables where their cards are not even in the ballpark Injustice move on.
if a seller is only rude to me, i just won't make a deal with them. it doesn't affect anyone else.
but a seller being grossly misleading like that? thanks for standing up for the rest of the hobby and trying to keep him informed
yep. same here
Not whining at all. At least you're educated enough not to get ripped off. Hopefully that dealer didn't dupe someone else.
Just keep it moving, good prices are wins, overpriced stuff is a pass. Simply walk away and dont let people ruin a good time.
Great pickups Chris! I do not think you are being whiny. I feel like I would have felt the same way. Thanks for the video and thanks for sharing!

He must not sell many cards?
You are probably right.
Just a little bit whiny. As soon as you see the prices marked way too high, you just have to walk away. It’s not worth your time or the aggravation.
The reason those 4 cards were still there for you is because they are grossly over priced. If he would have had them priced fairly, they'd probably already be gone.
It’s such a bummer when that type of seller has a card that you really want. I don’t think that you are whining.
