Thanks for the informative video, I know it's over a year old, but it's still very relevant. Most of my own hats I've made by buying patches I like and sewing them to Richardson 112 or 115 lids and it never occurred to me I could make this a profitable hobby-business.
Just like to know, because I don’t know anything about this business I want to start also. Do we need permission from the companies we do logos from? Let say super hero logos? Or var logos? Etc . Thank you
Hey thanks for the video love the out of the box thinking, I just got my d1 pro 10w less than a week ago and have loved playing around with it. As a noob I was wondering where you got the design for all the logos and characters. And how you got them on the program. Also what materials did you use? Thank you very much
You can just google search anything that you’re looking for and add the work “SVG” after it. It’s a file type. Save it to your computer and then drag it into your program. 👍🏻 with the diode laser you can engrave on so many materials. It’s best to check the XTool website.
This is such a great idea! I (like many) are starting up as well. I am curious, may I ask how how to sell material like this? Specifically, did you need to get any specific licensing to use Anime and other Game/Geek cultural images? (Coming from a Con/Gaming nerd). Thanks!
Exactly my thoughts. You’re essentially making money off their characters and movies. I would be worried about being sued. I know Disney don’t like it and have come down hard on Etsy shop owners for it in the past.
Good stuff. Do you have information/tips on the wood you chose for one or both machines? And where you sourced it (locally, online?) I'm a subscriber now! -Wes
Hey Wes! I work at a cabinet show and get Baltic birch 1/4 from their. It’s not failed me yet! If you check around town I’m sure you could find a shop with loads of scraps they want to get rid of
An idea that would be low hanging fruit. Go to local golf courses and make magnets out of their logo... A couple months before Christmas they will ALL be interested
For sure. As long as your image is high quality, your laser head is in focus and your depth/speed settings are correct your engraving should come out perfect.
I have limited computer skills and zero CNC skills. How hard would it be to learn the laser printer and program. In other words, " how hard is the learning curve"? How long would it take to learn. Very impatient person.
@@TheReformationWoodshop As soon as I finished watching your video, I looked at the cricut hat press. Iread some of the reviews on those leather patches that you used, some people had good results and others not so good. How are the patches holding up, any issues you've found using them?

@@TheReformationWoodshop not the Honeycomb, lol, Xtools is a ripoff, Amazon Honeycomb for half the price. I was asking about the sheet you used for displaying the magnets
For the wood magnets I’m using a 4x8 sheet of 1/8” $13 ply. (Not great for anything other than these magnets honestly) 100 pack of magnets cost $11. The patches cost $15 for 80. The hats were $7 each Hope that helps 👍🏻

Appreciate it!

thats a great idea... thanks for sharing it, layering never gets boring :)
Nicely done - that was a great bit of hustle! Just wondering if there are any potential trademark issues at all in using those images?
Yeah there is. Any licensed characters can get you a cease and desist but occasionally engraving things especially locally is pretty harmless. 👍🏻
Where do you get most of the images?
great story! if you paint the magnets of superheroes you will sell more and easier 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌hola from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Cool video!
Do you have any tips on how to get the projects centered perfectly?
I use the framing tool in the XCS software religiously. On top of that using a ruler and marking lines on your project can be really helpful!
Love these ideas. We started with an Xcarve, but we're in the market for a laser for smaller, quicker items. Thanks for the vid!!
Good luck, thanks!
Nice video! I just have a question since i'm starting with laser engraving. Do you need copyright to do things like this? ☺️
You do 👍🏻

but how much profit did you make?
Hi, thanks for the video. Can you provide a link to the magnets? Are you happy with them?
What thickness of wood are you using? Thanks
amzn.to/3MncUa8 I love these. And I’m using 1/4” material.
You rock man - great information for us hustlers!
Did you stitch the patches to the hats yourself or did the patches have a adhesive?
The patches come with adhesive.
Okay thanks
You are doing what I was thinking to do, use 2 diode lasers like people do with 3d printing. Also I notice you are not using mdf all the time.
Yeah MDF is no good. It’s super toxic so I just avoid engraving it.
@@TheReformationWoodshopPlywood is less toxic?
Can it cut the material, around the design? Can you engrave mugs or other curved items?
You can if you have the RA2 Rotary Attachment
An idea that would be low hanging fruit. Go to local golf courses and make magnets out of their logo... A couple months before Christmas they will ALL be interested
Great idea!
Do you coat the engravings with any type of coating?
You’ll need to for anything metal that you do. You can use a standard can of spray paint.
what kind of leather did you use? where did you buy it my friend? Thanks in advance
Amazon, the link is in the description of this video. Good luck 👍🏻
I have the D1 pro 10W as well and wa slooking to burn some leather patches like you have, if you dont mind, what settings did you use?
I have that engraver - still new in the sealed box. I've had it for over 2 years. Maybe I should open the box...
Yes! Do it now!
Haha, same! Glad I’m not the only one. If only there were more hours in the week.
I feel like the copyright thing everyone is tripping out is also a good way to introduce people into your own designs
It really is just a way to demonstrate what you’re capable of 💪🏻
Did you create these icons your self or did you find a file bundle online?
A little bit of both. There’s a lot of searching and storing up things as you go. Finding the right images is like a treasure hunt.
Is there a way to improve the detail/resolution of prints?
For sure. As long as your image is high quality, your laser head is in focus and your depth/speed settings are correct your engraving should come out perfect.
@@TheReformationWoodshop I’m doing a bit of homework on starting a side project of magnets
Can you do a tutorial on how to do multiples at oncr
I have limited computer skills and zero CNC skills. How hard would it be to learn the laser printer and program. In other words, " how hard is the learning curve"? How long would it take to learn. Very impatient person.
It is SUPER easy. I wouldn’t just say that either. I’m not a huge fan of these types of programs but the one XTool offers is very approachable.
Did you learn it?
How do you know if the item is copy right ? And your allowed to reprint to sell
You know by either having a license or making your own designs. Everything else is copyright infringement.
If the design exists somewhere, other than your head, it's copyrighted property....
Great vid. I'm really close to dropping the hammer on an xTool. Great tips.
Do it! Do it! Do it!
Awesome video. Did you use a hat press or did you iron them on?
I ironed them for this video but it was not a good experience at all. I now have a cricut hat press and it works really well.

How do you cut them out?
In the engraving program you can add a border around whatever you’re engraving and then specify the laser to cut that border.
@thereformationwoodshop where'd you get the magnetism sheet?

Absolutely! I may have to do a face off video for these two lasers because they’re both so useful to me.
I would like to see more on it. I ordered one thru kickstarter.
Where did you get the vector for the magnets????
Searching google for whatever characters I wanted and adding “SVG” behind it.
