I bought this game years ago because it was one of the few things I could afford with my switch gold points and I gotta say, it's left more of an impact on me than many $60 games have. I replay it every now and then to experience that short hike again (:
I love this game! I've completed it many times, it's just ideal for a certain state of mind. And when corona significantly lowered my brain's RAM and even watching movies in bed was too tiring, this little game was the only game I could entertain myself with
I've seen other's coverage of this game. But your video is one of the most convincing of its strengths, perhaps due to how much you seemed to be open for what it provides. As for what ive been distracting/decompressing with. Ultrakill. It's an oddball mix of quakes skill based movement, character action games, and first person shooters. The reason this tangled yarnball of mechanics helps me relax is because it is so specific to itself. I cannot engage my conscious mind too much while playing, lest I overthink and get utterly reamed by one of the games many challenges. It forces me to be more meditative and this helps me decompress my otherwise rather anxious and overthinking prone mind, especially these days when thoughts are (somewhat rightfully so) quite dark.
Awww, this was a sweet and lovely video, despite the sadness and stress inherent in the origin of how it came about. I hope you will be able to get a holiday in the real world soon enough as well too. :)
Wonderful video. I just finished the game and felt the same. That overwhelming feeling of progress coming together to an end. Imagining how impossibly tough it would be to do this without the encounters and help I've received and given. And then I looked up a sub 3 min. featherless speedrun. Anyway, early on in 2020 I've fallen depressed and found a game called Forest's Secret, which is strikingly similar only more fantasy, without the platforming and with a second act that dives deeper into a certain story line. I highly recommend it.
This game looks so charming; your commentary really captures its ability to provide escape from the pressures of everyday life by giving players the freedom to just wander through its scenic spaces. For me, another game featuring talking, humanoid animals helped me a lot - Animal Crossing: New Horizons! I was very grateful for it during the UK lockdowns (especially the first one when nobody really had a clue what was happening). Time felt like it dissolved during that isolating period, so the game’s heavy focus on routine (wake up, pick fruit, check the shops) made me feel like my life still had structure.
I love this game so very much, and it's a joy to see someone else talking about it! It really takes you to that calm and restful state of mind in a way I haven't seen anywhere else.
Excellent work Kat! I love how game can transport us back (or forward) into another time or space and work as a mental reset. In a very opposite way, Half Life: Alyx did this for me. It came out right when the pandemic started but it transported me back to long ago and the joys I had of first playing through Half-Life 2. Very different vibe, but a similar effect.
Hi, sent here from Adam Milart, this was a wonderful video, could really empathise with the experience. Its kinda sad, we need these complete breaks as life becomes unbering sometimes but theres also a beauty in it somehow. Anyway, great video :)
heard about this channel from cannot be tamed, and have watched four vids straight already. great work and i feel like our views on games are pretty in-line. looking forward to watching more and new stuff! thanks.
I recently had the pleasure of playing this gem after a similar onslaught in life and yeah... you couldn't have captured the beats any better, from the gradual unlocking of Claire's freedom as she embraced her island holiday, to the emotional descent from the peak. Great video. (Adam Millard sent me!)
I love this game so much! It’s so soothing and calming and the perfect escape from reality. And thanks to those lovely DS like graphics it also makes me feel nostalgic 🥰
Lovely ! If you're looking for something relaxing, short, stress-free, i strongly recommend Ode. It's a cute musical experience by one of ubisoft's smaller studios. I was planning to play a Short Hike eventually but after watching this video i just can't wait !
i love this game, and this is such a brilliant video. thank you for making it! i played it about a year ago but still listen to the soundtrack once a week or so
That was very sweet! I had a more streamlined experience with it - the goal to reach the summit never left my mind - but I was depressed as a kid and couldn't really enjoy any vacations. I'll recommend it to other people who did.
I came back here after playing 'A Short Hike' through PC Game Pass. I like it as well, but I think its a little funny that Claire, a city girl, is also a natural-born glider. Yeah, she's a sparrow, but how many opportunities would she get to fly between towers of concrete and steel?
I, The Forgotten One, and the Fallen Hero series on Hosted Games, the secondary publishing platform of Choice of Games, would be my pick of games for the question. There are trigger warnings for various themes, including some heavy abuse, reader discretion is advised.
Thanks for playing my game and making such a lovely video about it! I'm really glad you liked it :)
Thank you Adam for making amazing games!!
That was beautiful.
Enjoyed this. I'm slowly running out of Pixel a Day video to watch.
This video was responsible for purchasing the game and enjoying every second of it. Thank you so much for your effort.
That's amazing. I'm so glad you liked it!

Thank you for the ENGAGEMENT

Reminds me of Screen Therapy's video on DOOM
I'm only discovering your channel and your videos are so good

*cries in 32 days of banked leave*
The fun run reference got me haha
I can't believe I never made the connection that the race was between a rabbit and a turtle
How quaint.
Sometimes quaint is what you need
