While the rest of South Africa were recovering from the war. the Musk family lived very comfortably. If they ever lived above a garage it might be an apartment above petrol service station. There were buildings with s shops on the ground floor and apartments on top. South Africa is a different environment from America. Here we call a petrol service station a garage. The same people who say “don’t have kids if you need food stamps, we need to stop funding government subsidies for poor people” are literally saying “have kids you can’t afford” simultaneously now. Which one is it, conservatives? Do you want the government to fund programs to help poor families, or do you want people to be financially responsible and only have kids if they can afford them?

Here's the problem with the birth rate dropping. It's NOT going to cause a collapse in the "family unit." Here's where politicians are panicking about the birth rate drop, the government has already leveraged social security and pension plans based on the younger generation paying for the current people on those plans, and that's where you get a problem if the younger generation thins out, the geriatric population will be enormous in the next few decades and the reduced numbers of workers (births) paying into those Ponzi schemes is going to cause a financial collapse. That's the crux of it. But no worries, the GOP is going to cut social programs, Medicare, and social security in answer to this potentiality.

    • @henrythegreatamerican8136

When Ana was talking about not having child care and the high cost of giving birth and raising a child as deterrents for people not wanting to have babies. I just wanted to add that a lot of women are probably afraid that if they get pregnant and then finds out there is something severely wrong with the fetus and they would not have the right to abort the pregnancy even if the the fetus has zero chance of survival and also in some states if the pregnancy has complications there are no exceptions even if the mother's health or life is compromised they will let her die then lie about it so they can conceal the real numbers. If I were a woman thinking about having children that would be a big concern.

@@waveygravey9347, the problem with this argument is that those laws are poorly defined with even worse implementation. Who defines the threshold for when the mother's life is at risk? Politicians? Insurance companies? Hospital administration? With threats of legal action against physicians in potential abortion cases, there is hesitation and red tape that prevent or even delay critical care with catastrophic consequences. And remember, just because a person doesn't die doesn't mean there isn't devastating, irrevocable damage.

If there were fewer people in the world there would be more jobs and employers would not rip off their employees so much because there would be competition for workers.

Given the currency values at the time and the fact that the SA Rand was worth far less than the British Pound or USD by SA standards they had money. Not staggering wealth for sure, and by international standards not very much but they weren't struggling. But then when was this? For example did the money come later after the divorce?

I think it's sick to encourage people to have kids when they don't have the means to give them a good upbringing. People often lack the time and money to give kids what they need. Populations tend to balance themselves out given there is an environment to thrive in. Maybe plummeting birth rates indicate that we aren't thriving, and in that case Musk should be more concerned with that than people having more kids they can't take care of.

my mom said Her biggest mistake in life was " having kids" ... so perhaps she loved making kids but not everyone does ... every women I know who had children regret having them . People are POOR they are NOT going to the theater with or without having kids the movies is not even on their mind ... Know what my parents worried about was keeping a roof over their heads and cigarettes' forget about food or school clothes, school supplies, or food on the table their whole existence was just paying the rent and getting cigarettes' They need the cigarettes' to cope with all the poor deskins they made in life including having kids, . They want more people to have kids then fix the economy ... people who have hope for their future and that of their children's will want to have kids. If people can barely afford to take care of themselves then brining children into the world is the very definition of child abuse or at least neglect . She has no clue what she is talking about... she can speak for herself nut she absolutely can not speak for the whole world ... we are all different. even my mom said " just because you can have kids does not mean you should have kids" ... Insane you work 40 hours a week and then you try to raise a kid in what hours are left so you can never work on yourself to better yourself to fulfill your life as a person. Also who even w ants to bring kids in to the world ... to watch them suffer then die ... schools are terrible indoctrination centers ( my neighbor a 5th grade teacher calls her job " a very over priced babysitter " ..no one os teaching real subjects anymore) ... you have to work so you need the schools to babysit your kids ,, then do you vaccinate not to vaccinate. mask no masks, unsure job opportunities most only hire PT becaus e they do not want to pay healthcare ... so how do you afford healthcare . how do we even trust our medical people anymore, then what if you have a sick kid ... here is the thing MATH never lies ... words lie , words manipulate, words deceive , words can be misconstrued but math 2+2 will always be four ..m,ath never lies so if you can barely afford to feed yourself you can not afford kids.

The cost of childcare alone (Glorified Babysitter) is insanely expensive because many of these daycares are run like for profit businesses. There is some truth that the government will assist, but it's basically pennies and depending on the government in power at the time (Provincially/Federally)

The birth rate declining doesn't mean immediate population shrinkage:
A population can still grow even if birth rates are declining because more people are living longer and fewer people are dying.
This is called population momentum-younger generations born in the past (when birth rates were higher) are now having children, contributing to growth. It took 12 years to go from 7 to 8 billion people.
