I am the honest vocal coach! I have been teaching for 15 years and been singing since I was 16. I teach from my own studio and also teach and mentor via email, and online via Live & Skype. I specialise in teaching children, and teenagers pop and musical theatre but I am trained in all genres of music. I have studied every voice technique there is, including Speech Level Singing, Estill, Bel Canto, Robert Lunte, London College of Music, ABRSM, Ria Keen, Kim Chandler, Stevie Van Lange and many more. I have been around!
In 2008 I wrote the Vocaltutor Guide, 21 set lessons for singing teachers to get started, learning to teach, and produced 3 vocal exercise CD/Downloads.

My favourite was always Sarah in girls aloud. She had the best personality on stage and had just as good voice as Nadine! Apart from like the last year of them being a group, I don't know what happened to her then
She said she was put off by her earpiece but I’d still say it was a good representation of her capability.
Nooooo Georgina! This is why I suggested “defying gravity” on twitter! Kimberley mentioned in her book how the track wasn’t the right one and it threw everything off completely. She smashed defying gravity!

I really do feel that you could of chosen a better performance such as defying gravity. She has such a big voice when it comes to musical numbers this was just an off performance but she has performed this song better... All the same loving this series :)

In her autobiography, she talks about this performance and I think she says she was put off by static in her earpiece

She's supposed to be a professional singer. Those things shouldn't matter. Take the earpiece out and continue. But she wouldn't because she can't sing. How many great singers would jump at the chance to sing in front of all those people and with an orchestra as well.
Funkier than a funky thing there was no orchestra it was faked meaning they mimed so she needed the earpiece to hear the music properly

I remember being unimpressed with this at the time .. reading the comments it seems like something went wrong technically but unfortunately it was live TV so everyone saw it

Yes, probably nervous. But nothing to write home about here. Not a terrible singer though. She was always, honestly, the bland member sadly. She didn't get a decent amount of lines. It was always sort of the Nadine and Cheryl show and Kimba would get a spoken word part here and there it felt like.

I thought her pacing/timing was a bit off at the start.
I agree that her performance was a bit average and that she had some obvious nerves.
This song really needs a confident, well supported vocal.
You said you’re gonna look at more of her work. Can you have another look at all of them? I think you should react to Nadine singing I put a spell on you. She was stiff still during that. During Dangerous Games she was moving about a lot x

I've always liked the tone of Kimberly's voice, but I'm in agreement, it's so plain, it's so laboured too. She could've done much better...

I thought this too but I then watched "Defying Gravity" by Kimberly and she blew me away. That performance made me realize she can actually sing kinda good! To see Cheryl shine, I would suggest "Set Fire to the Third Bar"
I remember watching this and thought at the time she was terrible, give me the original Randy Crawford version any day.
Well Kimberly was always nice, but not a significant voice. Actually, I think, that her Defying Gravity live is a little bit better - maybe she was less stressed, because the audience was smaller. Still, the CD sound really chilling and enjoyable...live performance..as you said.. pretty average. Waiting for Sarah next week ;)
I just listened to defying Gravity and it was so much better then this performance.This song unfortunately just doesn’t suit Kimberlys voice even though Kimberley to my surprise is actually quite a good singer.But this song is way too big for her.

Edit - I just watched Defying gravity and it was far better than this.
She has a pleasant enough voice although not a very strong singer. This was an adequate performance, but as you said, a bit bland. I don't think she was capable of adding her own flourishes, she had to concentrate on actually hitting the notes in the first place.
I love her but this performance wasn't good...

She looks gorgeous but didn't emotionally connect to the song at all. Ear monitor issues or not, in a lot of her performances we need more personality and less going through the motions.

gotta be honest (i know im 4 years late) but i staunchly disagree almost everything you said here. as a mostly instrumentalist barely vocalist, i sing in my car the way i first fell in love with certain songs. i always scoop on “fly-yyyy awayyy” cause thats what i heard the first time. i love your videos and you usually always replicate flaws pretty accurately but this episode i almost got the feeling you were paid to trash this performance
I think its unfair if you use this song for Kimberley (for seeing whos the best in girls aloud) when she can obviously sing better and this is shown in defying gravity like you said yourself dont sing it if you cant!! She sings 110% better in defying gravity and you should use that song instead. Its only fair on Kimberley who can sing better than Cheryl but in this performance its doubtful.

Gotta be the worst singer out of all five. Kimberley didn't even make it into the final 10 girls. She was only given the opportunity when one of the other girls turned out to be over the age. Geri wanted Nicola Roberts to be the replacement, but Louis went for Kimberley because she was hot. Thankfully Nicola was 3rd time lucky as another girl also called Nicola that was in the final 10, dropped out due to being unhappy with the contract. Kimberley made it through to the final 5 because she was more likeable. These days I think she should just stick to reporting to the tabloids on Cheryl's life.
None of the girls aloud girls could sing besides Nadine. Nadine is the only one that won the competition twice after getting booted out for lying about her age, she then won again to get in girls aloud
