Mick Maloney's comment (3:55) is pretty provocative: "When Joe was playing his music you basically had the option of playing in pubs or rough dance halls. Where at the very best, you were considered a good rhythmic player for the purpose of accompanying dancing, or a good lively player that would be appreciated in the noise of a bar. So Joe grew up and learned his music in one of the worst eras in the history of Irish music in America" We could have a fun argument about that. Maybe he added context that got cut but "the worst era in the history of Irish music" was also one of the best times to be a professional musician. Dance music isn't the same as "sitting-down listening music." If you're a dancer, it's better. When was the "best era" in Irish music then? I'd love to hear more about that from Mick and Joe and other folks who were there.
This is a fantastic little film on Derrane!
