  • Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by psychologist and author Steven Pinker to discuss the state of the modern world, including the problems with cancel culture, the modern day's idea of free speech, why the world is often negatively perceived due to the news cycle and the fight against free speech in university campuses.
    Piers asks Steven about his previous comments a couple of years ago suggesting the world has never been in a better place. Steven says as of today that might not be true but what he meant was that the world is in a lot better place than shown by the media.

    People need to understand that argument doesn't mean you speak to win. When you argue, it's because you want to find the truth. When you go into an argument thinking you already know the truth, you've defeated the purpose. People are so uncomfortable with accepting the fact that they could be wrong. Instead of admitting it, they doubledown

      You do it too, guaranteed. We all do. The problem is when large groups of people, in identity groups, start to do it to someone on mass.

      Modern societies encourage the opposite actually. Ie if you change your mind in an argument, you are a weak and a pushover. Everyone seems to love a person who speaks without compromise, without ifs and buts.

    Counter argument. This perspective is like a group of rowdy men who spend 4 carefree weeks in a holiday home. Completely trashe the place and doesn't tidy up after themselves; food waste, beer bottles etc. Then happily hand the keys over to the next visitors, a young family with two young kids who have worked hard to be able to aford 5 days in the holiday home. Those parents then have to spend the next few days working around the clock to tidy the house to how it should be whilst also looking after and picking up after the 2 kids as they go. Leaving 1 day to recover before returning home to work a 9-5. 😐

    Free speech shouldn’t be confused Hate speech and insight to violence. A number of countries has clear rules in their constitution distinguishing these. Countries that don’t have this uses Free speech as a leverage against those that has. This is where the red line must be drawn.

    • @craiglandon7571
      @craiglandon7571 8 місяців тому

      I understand having an incitement line. I would agree with that. If you're calling for violence on people regardless of the reason why it should be punishable. As long as saying you dislike someone or their ideas or mocking them isn't the standard for "violence"
      Hate speech laws though... Absolutely NOT. They are subjective and vague by nature. There are a few "free" nations (Canada, UK off the top of my head) with hate speech laws that have jailed/fined people for "offensive" jokes. Personally, I find that a VERY slippery slope because whether or not something is "offensive" is up to whoever is hearing it at the time. I would find the whole concept laughable if it didn't have potentially dire consequences.
