i shot a roll of provia 400x for my first reversal film before i knew just how rare it was, i got probably my last photos of my great aunt, and its just so amazing and pretty, hope slide film survives the discontigeddon of fuji, i hope i can get some more rolls through.
I like how Fuji regularly likes to mention in articles that they "still care about photography" yet is actively discontinuing film without any replacements in mind
the editing and layout if this vid is fresh as hell, there's loads of flair and personality in this quieter style, it feels closer to the sort of quiet going out for photography actually feels like
Slide film is amazing stuff. Pretty much every stock photo was shot on slide film. Even some press photographers used it. That famous shot of Bill Clinton hugging Monica Lewinski was shot on slide film. I also love the ethos of shooting slides: you either got the shot, or you didn't. No futzing in post, even if you wanted to. Take the shot and move on.
I always joked that I would trade Velvia 100 for Provia 400X, but I didn't think Fuji was going to actually take me up on that offer. I really hate how we're stuck with expired Provia 400, because the fresh Provia 400 never looked that muted and washed out. It was as vibrant and sharp as Provia 100F!
I hope we get something like fresh 400 speed Ektachrome or Provia again. In the mean time... I'm very excited for FuguFilm 400 Even though so far we've only had the first press release when it comes to news on it, I'm still really excited for it! I wonder what its push properties and reciprocity factors are like! I wonder what its character is like! Is it warm and vibrant? Cold? Lifelike? Man, I'm so excited for this you've no idea!
Wow -- halfway through -- great, as you note, realistic colors -- definitely not a Kodak look. And the scans are great -- the sharpness really comes through (especially for a 400 ISO film). And the exposures (which need to be spot-on for even fresh slide film) are awesome! Man -- I want me some!!!! Used to shoot Kodachrome 25/40/64/200 (rare) in the mid-late 70's as a teenager in my Nikon F with crappy "Quantaray" lenses. But loved the warmth -- we'll probably never see that as a baked in color palette in a slide film again. Have not messed with slide film since the Ektachromes of the 1980s. But now I wish that I had shot some of the Fuji products -- especially this -- it just comes across so "clean." Thanks Noah!!!!
I have always used color reversal film to photograph often Agfa but also Kodak sometimes also Fuji, my first slides I made in 1980 my slide projector bought new is the Reflecta, Diamator AF
In victoria BC we (London Drugs) have to send it to Vancouver store's lab. They can scan reversal at time of development, and either leave it as a complete strip or in short strips of four frames, as well as mount them. I always get them mounted unless it's a test. BUT, scanning of existing slides? Three dollars a slide for scanning, prints are extra. After scanning my own slides, I can appreciate it though.
Arguably my most absolute MISSED emulsion over any other. I still have a few rolls frozen but I treat it like the gold that is now is. Fuji's Astia and Reala 100, Natura 1600, Ferrania Solaris 100, Konica Centuria 400 Pro... all favorites. All gone.
I get mystified by how the pictures look like they were taken 20-30 years ago, when they were actually taken a few weeks ago. The magic of film. No digital filter can do that.
Situation after just one year afrer the publishing of this video: no color reversal film of any kind is available in Europe. What is left, are old stocks of Fuji films. Kodak Ektachrome was last seen for around February-March of 2023, but has since disappeared completely from European market. I hope Kodak could supply this film also outside the US market. Film seems to be readily available in rhe US, but customs charges would make it cost too much to sell in Europe, for obtaining this film from unofficial routes from the US, when Alaris refuses to fill orders by European retailers. Fuji has never announced they would stop the production of their slide films (except for stopping taking orders from Japanese retailers). but both Provia and Velvia have disappeared frim the global market. In larger formats, such as 120, and sheet films, there are more old stocks left, but for 135, I bought the last rolls I could find anywhere in Europe less than month ago. I have still 19 rolls of Rrovia in my refrigerator, but it remains unclear, when new stocks will be available. If no film will be available, it means also, from the business poin of view. discontinuing all E6 developers from the European market. I urge Kodak Alaris not to make Ektachrome a US only product.
As someone who only shot reversal film once ( An expired Ektachrome roll my dad had lying around ), i wish there was more options and that it was easier to get outside europe/US. Who knows, maybe soon we'll some some new slidefilm coming to life by Fuji or Kodak haha. As always, aweasome video, Noah. Cheers, mate!
Humm... Guess what, Fuji has just discontinued Velvia 100 in the US, a week ago ! I hope the future of slide film will stay with Kodak Ektachrome, no sign for Kodak discontinuing anything, hopefully.
I agree the 85mm f1.8 is way too expensive to justify. I was fortunate to get a copy for free from my grandfather, it is an excellent lens though. It's my favorite FD lens I've used so far.
@@guccimain89 much has changed since I posted that. But we still need Ultramax in 120 and more 100 or 400 ft cans of Ektar or Portra or Gold. Ilford has all of their film line up in 100ft and both 35mm and 120. Kodak needs to repeat after Ilford.
We need another Carrington Event, then all these digital wannabees and the companies supporting them will HAVE to come back and shoot film!!. After they get the grid up and running, again. None of their fancy electronic gear will work because it'll have been burnt out by a massive EMP. Fuji and Kodak will have to bring back all their great films and things will be happy from then on :)
Fuji’s words, not mine! “As such, Fujifilm will discontinue FUJICHROME Velvia 100 Professional film in the U.S. effective immediately” www.fujifilm.com/us/en/business/professional-photography/film/velvia-100
And In the video I say that they will ‘discontinue Velvia 100 in the united states due to environmental guidelines’ I wasn’t saying it was being discontinued everywhere.

been with you for about a year now, really enjoy the laid back videos you da man man!
I really love that you had the film mounted and projected it on the wall! I can smell that high intensity bulb warming up! Excellent!
I've had a single roll of Provia 400X 120 sitting in my fridge for a decade waiting for the right time to shoot it. Loved the video!

It sucks that I can't project my 6x9 reversal photos but they're so damn pretty to look at
There is a 6x7 projector that does exist
I have a 6x6 projector made by Polaroid and projecting a 6x6 slide is amazing
@@alexinnewwest1860 I've heard of 6x6 projectors but never 6x7. Who's it made by?
The company is called götschmann. They are way more expressive than the 6x6 ones, probably stick with them.
Hey, Noah. Have you done a video touching upon different flashes? Would you be doing that at some point?
Love that shot at 6:25

Nice!
That 20mm FD lens is a nice lens, I tried it out myself and found it a nice experience!
Slide film is a great experience!
My favourite film stock ever made. Didn't use anything else for years. I miss it so much😭😭😭
The dream of having a 400iso slide film. I currently push provia +2 to 400 which works but good luck with the dynamic range.

Hey man, have you thought of doing reviews of some of the FFPs regular 8mm film? Or any other regular 8 stuff? Cheers for the awesome videos

Why does a 400ISO slide film matter? Super 8 options was my immediate thought.
While you're dreaming, how about 100 ft rolls of color film, E6 and C-41. How about Kodak gold in 120 and faster film speeds.
Thankfully roughly half of what you asked for is now true. You can get 400’ rolls of ektachrome and gold is available on 120 now.

This stuff is done by Downtown Camera in Toronto!
We forgive you for not inviting us physically to your living room slide presentation, it's unfortunate but understandable...:)
Maybe they could put out a new version without the banned chemical?
