  • Last sunset flight before moving off the island of Oahu. Preflight, all checked good. Had flotation installed. Training is the most important part.

Lucky you! You just missed getting wet. It goes to shows ya, altitude is everything when you're over water. Congratulations on a safe landing and thanks for sharing.

Yep same thing I was thinking. He wasn't all that low, but still to low for a safe and proper landing.

Could also have been pretty dangerous getting caught in the waves smashing against the rocks.

It is very safe, but he is doing risky flying out over the ocean at a low enough altitude that if the engine cuts you're making a bad emergency water landing in very rough water. That's called stupid in my book. Even in a real aircraft you never fly so that you can't make a safe landing (no injury to person or property) should you lose your engine.
I know it must seem fun to fly out low over the ocean but if you can't make it back to land when the engine cuts you're a fool. Maybe even a dead fool if the rip tide takes you out or you can't get out of the harness fast enough. If you want to fly low over the water then fly up and down a beech.

Wow, just made it! Those waves were rough too. Glad you didn't have to land in that surf. Looked like calm and very thought out process of an emergency landing. Good voice over too. It really walked us through what was going on in your mind. The only thing missing is what happened to cause the netting to get into the prop. Generally if that happens, it is during take off, when there can be some shaking of the cage, etc. Thanks for posting and glad you made out alright.

5 seconds between engine failure and the start to turn towards land. No hesitation on that critical reaction. That's impressive and definitely contributed to the dry landing. That's the kind of reactions you only get with training. Good job!

  • @hogey74

Thanks for putting this up. Everyone is an expert online but this kind of vid gives us all a chance to put ourselves in a position and think about it. Glad you were able to make land. I can see that there was a no-man's land aspect to that glide, a bit like landing an aircraft on a one-way, sloping mountain strip. There was a decision point and either a turn around into the wind to land behind the breakers or continue to a shore landing. The breakers and submerged rock was going to suck. But this reminds me of the need to be brutal in those moments and to chose the calm water landing if stretching the glide is looking dodgy. From my lounge room it looked tight but good ... you turned land-ward very quickly.
Risking a water landing in order to get closer to something like whales is simply a choice - so long as people actually decide and then mitigate the risks, that's reasonable. Again, thanks for the vid.

Brother, you nailed that patch- this is my second time watching this video and what a great save that was. You anticipated how much height you should fly at, and you did it. What motor was this? What was the cost to repair it?

    • @paramandans

He didn't nail anything he just got real lucky as he barely made it back from being way to low for being so far out over the water. Not smart.

    • @paramandans
      @paramandans 7 років тому +14

I have been flying small air craft for over 30 years and I have been a P4 paraglider pilot for about 20 years so yeah, I have flown plenty. Heading for land as soon as your motor gets jacked is not skill it's called better freaking do it and do it now. He didn't do anything special to make it to that small beach, no speed bar and no big ears just headed for it. Like I said he got lucky with barely enough altitude to make it there. Now if he had been higher (like he should have been) while out that far from the beach then he would have had plenty of altitude to land higher up and not in the rocks and almost in the water.... LUCK

What is encouraging is that even in an emergency situation, as a only interested potential paramotorer is that it always seems like a safe descent. I know there are big injuries in paramotor but it seems it generally happens from crashing against walls, hotdogging or something. Rarely from conservative flight.

Look we all know that low flying over water, or anywhere with no easy landing is not, ideal.
However the thing that i noticed the most in this video was how well you responded to the problem. At the end of the day thats what gets you home, dangerous flight or easy flight.
You immediately turned to land, prepped for a possible emergency water landing then checked to see if you could restore power. It was very obvious you were prepared for the worst and knew just what to do.

Great piloting, situational awareness and control in a rockin downwind! (no pun intended)

First rule of single engine aircraft - always fly with glide back altitude to a landing spot. That was close, glad you landed ok.

Wow, that's amazing. Hit that patch perfectly, even more amazing considering there looked like there was a good breeze that day and you landed WITH the wind! Crazy how fast you landed and stayed up right.

That is quite an amazing tight precision landing there, and with a tail wind too. Trying to land there on purpose, not in an emergency situation, would have been extremely difficult, and would probably end of with some broken bones..... Goes to show that keeping a calm state of mind together with a good amount of experience, could save your life. Applause for the handling and execution of the situation🏆
