I've had run-flats on my three Corvettes, and they DO get you home. I have never had a repair shop refuse to repair a nail/screw, which have all been in the tread area. The repairs hold up just fine. They ARE costly, but Vettes don't have a spare, nor a jack (yeah I know, you can get one); so for me they are worth it. Vettes have a stiff ride in general (especially with the Z51 option), so the extra stiffness is not noticeable. I find they handle just fine. In my several decades of driving, I've changed many dozens of tires on sedans, PUTs, and Corvettes - a few on the side of the road, which is not fun if it is cold, raining, and/or vehicles are whizzing by at high speed.
My wife's Lexus has Bridgestone RFT. They are very good for her and OK for me. On my Miata ND2 and on the Suzuki Jimny I use only performant dedicated winter and summer tyres, even though the RFT progressed a lot lately (specifically Bridgestone is going nicely).
I drive across the US a couple of times a year. If you get a flat and it can't be repaired in someplace like Shamrock Tx, where do you think you can get a new tire? Get a motel and wait a day or so! I bought Bridgestone's and the ride was rough and I lost MPG. I think run flats would be useful if you are going to rob a bank. It would eliminate the worry that cops are going to deploy those pesky tire strips on the freeway as you are trying to get away. lol
