- Learn how colonists used herbs to dye material. Colonial Williamsburg weaver Max Hamrick shows us several examples of herbs and the colors they can create. Today, Colonial Williamsburg's weavers use the same 18th-century recipes for dyes -- all safe enough to drink.
Wow! I never knew you could get such rich reds, blues, and purples!
THANK YOU! I have been wanting to know exactly what colors can be achieved by the various plants, but most videos don't show an example. Thank you so very much
Love the display of the yarn with the dye! Thank you!
I learned some of this in grade school and natural dyes still interest me as an adult. I studied fiber arts in college, so this relates as well. Thank you for sharing this.
You are such a great teacher!!
I can also recommend beech and hazelnut leaves and lupine flowers (either yellow or green) Especially when they are being boiled in an iron pot.
Madder: I have achieved a brilliant red on wool (redcoat red) with madder by using ammonia as an after-bath.
Really informative! Thank you!
Thanks for this, it is quite informative!
This is a great video!! In CT We have pokeberries too!
Hello! thank you for the interesting video. I do have a question. Is it possible to dye leather by those paints?

WELSBY ROOTS did you find a book that you you would recommend?
starkes Outfit
DO you know anyone who does this dye in California?
Can you make a dye from mulberrys if so does it last a while?
No dye from berries lasts
Hi I have a question can you use fruits &vegetables as dye?
Vegetables like beetroot produce a colour-fast very intense dye, so there's no reason why not
Yes, but sadly they fade very fast
@@aurializ3287 I think if you add a mordant it would last longer but I am not well informed on dyeing cloth/wool. I am trying to learn online.
still usefill now bae
:3
an interesting video, but its a good thing I knew most of this, I could barely understand him haha
The title is misleading as most of the dyes mentioned are not herbs. An insect is definitely not an herb. I am surprised the foundation would make such an error. It’s my duty as a certified horticulturist/plant scientist to note this for others.
The camera person needs to choose another career. How difficult is it to film a motionless table?
Shame you rush through the whole video and speak to fast without feeling. Doesn't give the listener time to take it all in! Pity.
