Same, spent like 10 years trying to remember who made this song so I could listen to it again. Lost all of my electronics and music collection back then and could never remember Shiny Toy Guns no matter how hard I tried.
A good cover is one that sounds very unlike the original. This song takes the theme and spins it in a completely different way, like putting on a colored set of glasses. It's darker and more modern than the original, and I suppose it depends on your mood which one you prefer listening to at the moment. It's nice to see that the same melody can emit an alternate tone when supplied with a different background. I think Shiny Toy Guns did a very good job with this. :)
I thought I only experienced this cover in a fever dream as I could NOT find it by simply typing "Puttin' on the Ritz". Had to scour years into the past to finally find it. So glad I could!
Was going through my favorites recently and stumbled upon this gem, again. I read the comments and couldn’t help but post that by saving it years ago, I was able to remember it today. Something to never take for granted. (:
I heard this song when I was really young and I heard the original recently and spent forever looking for this cover because It's been playing on the fourth floor of my mind for a decade
haa i was singing this in the car with my mom and she was like "omh how do you know that song? its from the 30s" i was like haha mom duh, im a huge fred astair fan .. duh
I’ve been listening to Shiny Toy Guns since I was 16 and remember discovering this song on this exact video not too long after it came out. Soo wild that I’m now 34 and it keeps resurfacing on my feed over 17 years later 😮
i say SUPER DUPER all the time now after hearing this song =P amazing cover! one of my favorites! cant wait till there new album (III) coming out this winter!!!! =O
No, Shiny Toy Guns did NOT break up! They just replaced Carah (singer on We Are Pilots) with Sisely, who sings on their new album Season of Poison. They are still a band. :]
My neighbor put this in the car (I was going to a play with him, his wife and kids.) the kids sang it so good. I sang along eventually. I love this song. Shiny Toy Guns!~
What ever happened to the official music video? It seems like it's been expunged from the internet. Back when this song came out, they had a video with three of the band members dressed in 20's styled clothing (with added heavy gothic overtones), and the two female members get married and it ends with them driving off in a 1920's car trailing cans and flowers with "Just Married" written on the back.
Guys get over it, they covered it, what else matters. Just listen to it or not. If u have something useless to say, please don't say it. nobody likes that.
@OxymoronicRomantic It was first sung by Henry Richman. This is acttually the re-written version done in 1930 by Irving Berlin to better fit a white audiance for a movie that I can't remember the name of.
Taco may have revitalized it, but the song was famous long before him. It had been a hit in the 1920s and Fred Astaire made it famous again in the 1950s.
This song is NOT from the Eighties though Taco did cover it. It's from the Thirties! It's been covered many times, including by Fred Astaire several times and, in "Young Frankenstein", by Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle.
Written by Irving Berlin around 1929 and performed by Harry Richmond (originally). Fred Astair also recorded a popular version of this song. All versions Ive heard are great in different ways.
i HATE it when people are like "oh well this aint as good as (taco or fred astaire). this is music, its not a one-upping contest ok? if u find fred astaires version to ur liking, or taco's more, then thats a matter of preference. no one version is better then the other, there all MEANT to be different. its called a cover for a reason.
"Puttin on the ritz" is a term from some 8--90 years ago that meant getting dressed up. This is not an original song, heck, it wasn't even new when Taco covered it in the 80's. This song actually dates from 1929, and what written by Irving Berlin.
This song is by Irving Berlin and was released in the 1930s lol. it keeps getting re-done every few decades because it's an absolutely genius piece of syncopated music. This version is basically a cover of a cover of a cover. Shiny Toy Guns' cover of Taco's cover of Fred Astaire's cover of Irving Berlin. lol
Fred Astaire>Shiny Toy Guns>Taco ....I hate Taco's guts.... But version is more reminiscent of Taco's rendition... Fred Astaire is pretty slick with his awesome tap dancing skills
Been trying to find this song for so long, I kept telling myself it was the taco version I heard all those years ago but this is it, this is it! *they're nothing alike!
The original wasnt sung like this, the orignal was done by Fred Astaire, which was then covered by Taco, then Shiny Toy Guns did a covered very much so based off Taco's take of the song, either way I like all three versions of the song. :D
I guess they’re never going to put this on Apple Music or Spotify
RIGHT!? I hate that.
Literally just tried looking, I guess this is my life now.
It’s not up to them
For real I searched for an hour before coming here and to be vindicated
I thought I was crazy for a moment. I knew they covered this song but I can’t find it. Makes me miss the old days with my iPod nano.
Damn, I used to love this song as a teen😂
Same, spent like 10 years trying to remember who made this song so I could listen to it again. Lost all of my electronics and music collection back then and could never remember Shiny Toy Guns no matter how hard I tried.

Feels like Gene Wilder and Peter Boyle should be dancing to this.

PUTTINAHNARIIZZ!!

I've literally just done exactly that right now. Spent a whole evening wracking my brain. Couldn't not for the life if me remember who covered it
Same. I’ve randomly sang this version of the song since I last hear it probably in 2008. Finally found it today. After many attempts 😂

This song always makes me think of the Young Frankenstein lol... Gene Wilder and the Monster doing a tap dance = awesome
This song makes me feel like dressing in a fancy suit and hat while wearing a big bushy mustache whilst strolling down Broadway Avenue 🤣🤣🤣🤣
What an awesome, underrated, forgotten band T-T that promotional photo takes me back, how surreal.

cant wait till there new album (III) coming out this winter!!!! =O
With 12 years to reflect. How did you like the album when it dropped? Lol
I'm torn between this version and Rufus' version. Both are amazing.
I never knew electronic would work for this song, but it does!
No, Shiny Toy Guns did NOT break up! They just replaced Carah (singer on We Are Pilots) with Sisely, who sings on their new album Season of Poison. They are still a band. :]

Singing this song in choir, and I got super excited when I saw this cover.
I applaud them for doing this cover quite well. But you can't beat the classic.
If it weren't for the fact that this song is completely awesome, I'd be ashamed that I like it.
I would gladly pay a buck twenty-nine for this awesomeness, wtf itunes
Even in 2022 this song Still slaps.

This is so much better than the versions I've heard.
I like this. I haven't even heard the original.

It took me some time too to let the lyrics flow as good as in the song xD but its fun to sing!
14 years later. I rediscovered this song and read your comment.
And I still listen to this song (and obviously all their other songs! 😊)
i HATE it when people are like "oh well this aint as good as (taco or fred astaire). this is music, its not a one-upping contest ok? if u find fred astaires version to ur liking, or taco's more, then thats a matter of preference.

one of my favorite songs of all times
"Trying hard to look Like Gary Cooper" epic epic phrase
They also did a remake of Puttin on the Ritz. It's just really hard to find on youtube.
Love that new bands are remaking songs from the 1980's!
This songs from the 30s hahaha

Fred Astaire>Shiny Toy Guns>Taco
....I hate Taco's guts....
But version is more reminiscent of Taco's rendition... Fred Astaire is pretty slick with his awesome tap dancing skills
Been trying to find this song for so long, I kept telling myself it was the taco version I heard all those years ago but this is it, this is it!
*they're nothing alike!
actually, its a song originally written and produced way back in 1929.
killer song for sure!
yea, Upon listening to this more and more, I'm liking it even more than ever. I prefer it to the original and the 80s version
I think I like the original and the version in the Young Frankenstein better, but I do love this version.
reminds me of a roundhay garden scene video that used to be on youtube but can't find it anymore .
I'm kinda torn like you, eggsistoast, but I'm torn between this version and Taco's version. This song is the coolest!!
God this is Too good 🖤
The original wasnt sung like this, the orignal was done by Fred Astaire, which was then covered by Taco, then Shiny Toy Guns did a covered very much so based off Taco's take of the song, either way I like all three versions of the song. :D
nice quality. i feel the deep base on this song
God I have been wracking my brain trying to remember who this was.. found it.. phew
Besides Gene Wilder's version, I like Taco's version put backward. The way the backward version says "Surrender" cracks me up! XD

Irving Berlin wrote it in the 1930s, it's been covered by a ton of people, Taco did it when, 50 years after it was written?
