  • Wayan Mawan is one of the few remaining sculpture artists in Buruan Village, Blahbatuh District, Gianyar. A work of wooden sculpture whose carving follows the grain of the wood, one of the works of fine art that is increasingly rarely made. Because raw materials, especially old frangipani trees that are tens to hundreds of years old, are now increasingly rare in Bali.
Not only raw materials, "Artist" wooden sculptures are also increasingly rare. I Wayan Mawan, one of the surviving wooden sculpture artists.
I Wayan Mawan has been involved in the art of sculpture for more than 40 years. Each of his works always has a puppet theme, namely by exposing the epics Ramayana and Mahabharata, using frangipani wood. The reason I Wayan Mawan always raises the theme of wayang in each of his works of art is because it was born from environmental factors where I Wayan Mawan followed in the footsteps of Made Lentor and I Ketut Modern as successors to sculpture artists who raised the theme of wayang in his region, while the other reason was because he wanted to preserve ancestral culture, and puppet themes can sell well in the market and reach international or foreign countries. Each sculpture he creates has an iconic character and narrative contained in each sculpture.
