- Helllloooo....welcome to my Thursday in the studio! Today I started sewing together this collage style t-shirt quilt and thought I would share my process with you. We start joining blocks together and we tackle a partial seam.
I am working with my 4" Quilting Grid in this series: goo.gl/wJgx5A

I've made a few t-shirt blankets where the panels are all the same but I'm about to embark on a baby keepsake blanket, where the panels will be different sizes. watching your videos have been really helpful for this, especially the planning out on a template and how to sew partial seams.
Thank you so much for making this video series, its such a great HELP!
This was a great tutorial! It’s so helpful to see the construction process at length. You’ve put a lot of thought and effort into your construction process. The fact that you are kind enough to share that speaks volumes about you as a person. Thank you! You’ve made an impact in my quilting experience. 🌹
This kind of reaction gives me purpose and I appreciate that a LOT, thank you ♡
Lisa Capen Quilts, the information you are sharing here has such value! There are others that charge to share this information. I’m not putting them down in any way, I am highlighting the value of your tutorials. I learned all I know about sewing and quilting either here on UA-cam or by buying classes on Craftsy. I am so grateful for all that I have learned. Thank you!
Anitra Marinchek I'm glad to have to following along ♡
You make partial seams look easy! In fact, you are so organized that you make the whole process look easy. I'm really glad that I found your channel.
I'm glad you think so!! Sometimes I think I sound a little confusing trying to explain what exactly I'm thinking hahahaaa. Yes! You can do this :)
Another great video that explains so many aspects I needed to learn. Going to be obsessed with glue basting. Thank you so much Lisa! You're amazing 😊
You are so welcome ♡
Thanks so much fo the glue basting tip! I am making my first tshirt quilt. This is life changing!
it really is!!! You are so welcome :)
Thanks so much for give us the berry best regard to this new technique a new construction include your tips to buy economic supply as well how to use a long the way. I learned my wily classes when you stared.congratulation to you how you advanced technique and personal quilt ideas. 2022 today.
Thank you so much, you have made me not afraid to try something new. I love your videos.
THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED GOD BLESS YOU!!!
Hey Soror, I'm so glad this was helpful for you!
Thanks Lisa!! I'm starting my first quilt. This helped me with the concept of building bigger blocks that become the final quilt so thank you! My design is a little complex for my first one but I think if i take it block by block and take my time i'll be ok. ;-)
You are so welcome!
You rock Lisa Capen!!! You do such an amazing job of explaining this process. Best I have seen and thank you soooo much!!
Wow, thank you so much Sandi!! I appreciate that a LOT!
I was always too intimidated to try set-in seams, but you’ve made it look easy! You have an excellent teaching style- a very calm and logical presentation.
thank you so much!!! Once you do a few seams like this, you'll get the hang of it and be a pro in no time flat :)
Never seen anyone using glue. Learned something new. I’ll have to try this. Thanks for the video .
I love glue basting! Thanks for watching :)
I love your technique on doing this. I’ve got a tee shirt quilt going now.
Just started watching you. I am so glad I found you. You explain well and are easy to understand. So glad I found you. Keep up the good work.
I like the way you use the grid to plan the quilt it does make construction of the quilt much easier and it shows where a little more effort will be need (those pesky partial seems). This old woman is learning from you! Thank you. 🙂
Aweee Sandra, I'm so glad to have you join along with me ♡♡
I am starting a memory quilt for a friend with her Grandpa’s clothes. This tutorial has been very helpful. I’m just so nervous about diving into it. Lol. Your work is amazing!
I totally get it.....the hardest part is cutting the shirts.....after that......it's so much fun hahahaa :)
I love how you plan everything with the grid and know exactly how to deal with the partial seams. Leaves nothing to chance, no surprises to frustrate the work. I have not tried a t shirt quilt yet, but with your techniques I think it will turn out great when I do make one. And THANK YOU!
Yessss.....I had to learn the hard way...that's why the grids came about. It takes all the yucky math out of trying to figure out which size blocks fit where hahaa. If you make one I'd love to see it!!
Thank you so much for the very informative video's. I have two big containers of my 2 daughter's T-shirts from when they were in High School. I need to get busy and eagerly await part 3.
debra revay awesome! I hope this little series gets you excited to jump into your quilt :)
I've made lots of tshirt quilts. Love how you designed it on the grid and color and number the shirts. I'm not a fan of glue basting but enjoy your videos.
Thanks so much for watching :)
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead hi Lisa i been doing some research on the gluing. Im going to do a small sample quilt to see if the elmers glue is different from another glue i used. I would love to do it your way. I hate pins
This was amazing and you are so calm and patient with your instruction. I was wondering if you have any direction as to what to charge for a quilt this size? Thank you SewDonna
Thank you!!!! Excellent explanation.
This is an amazing series. I enjoyed seeing your kitchen update and would love to see your studio too. Btw, were coming to Williamsburg this weekend to visit our son and family who moved there last summer. It’s a lovely area.
I hope you enjoy your visit to Williamsburg!!!
Thanks I’m in the process of making a T-shirt quilt (wall-hanging) for my daughter and she has so many different size logos I have them cut out so many sizes already. And was at a loss on how to assemble them in a quilt.
Hey Rachel, I definitely think using some kind of grid paper will be helpful!! It may seem overwhelming at first, but once you jump in and start, it all seems to go together wonderfully!! Here to help if you need :)
Very well done. Thank you for sharing.
thank you so much Jacki!
Wonderful tutorials!
Thank you, Lisa! Partial seams aren't nearly as scary as I thought. :)
Hahaa....I hope I wasn't too confusing....the more you do them, the simpler they become for sure!
I just found this series and I love it. I am going to tackle making t-shirt quilts for my daughters. In using the partial squares, do you use interfacing on those pieces as well? Were these just extra pieces from the t-shirts that weren't being used? Could quilting cotton material also be used for the partial pieces, and if so, do they need to have interfacing applied to them also? Thanks so much.
Excellent video. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching along Trisha!!
Thank you so much for this quilt series. I am making my first collage t-shirt quilt. I was under the impression that you should not sew the blocks together where the corners meet. Like when you first stitched your four blocks together and they all met in the corner. I don't know where I heard this but wanted to make sure this is OK to do. I think I have a lot of the same size blocks and I may wind up doing this but want to make sure that this is the correct way. I guess anything goes when you are doing these quilts. Thanks again.
Hello! Hmm.....I'm not quite sure where you heard that either :) If that's a "rule" of constructing a quilt......then MOST quilts are put together incorrectly hahaha! Truthfully.......I do have a little bit of a different mindset, and don't follow ALL of the rules anyways, however, it is absolutely ok for your blocks to come together in the way you mentioned. Check out my other videos, I have another t-shirt quilt series where I do a simple quilt with blocks all the same size. And you are right, I like the thinking of anything goes :)
Thank you for getting back to me. I agree, that it is OK for your blocks to come together at the corners. I have been looking at a lot of collage quilts and I may have picked that up somewhere. But I do love the way you use the grid and actually, I purchased your grids on etsy. I will be following along with your series. Thank you very much...
@@ksergas5301 thank you so much for supporting small artists like myself!!
I would love to see a memory quilt from baby onesies collage style
I made 5 t-shirt quilts and probably did everything wrong. My biggest issue was sewing the blocks together. I couldn't get the seams to stay...i.e., the seams would pull apart. I tried everything and finally had to buy a serger so the knit fabric would stay sewn together. I'm thinking from watching your video that I didn't stabilize my tshirts well enough. I used P44F but had a hard time getting it to stick. Possibly, I just didn't take the time to adhere it well. Have you ever had any of these issues? I'm really learning a lot from your videos and feel like a collage quilt is in my future. Thank you for your time.
Every once in a while I notice the Pellon didn't adhere well......not so much since I started using a heat press. When you see it, all you have to do is press it again. Try covering it with a pressing cloth and using a touch of steam....that always works best for me. Now I'm not sure why your seams would pull apart.......I think I'd need more info like stitch length to help with that one.
Thank you for replying. I tried again with P44F and SF101 along with polyester thread and it was successful! I'm pretty sure it was the interfacing not adhering to the Tshirt . I'm really excited to make a collage style Tshirt quilt and I'm learning so much from your UA-cam videos. Learning inkscape is a challenge but I'm happy to add it to my knowledge.
Keep making these excellent videos.
I have enjoyed watching you I have only made one T-shirt blanket I make skirts from T-shirts and sweaters
Not sure I liked the actual glue being used.... but the process was helpful and helped me out with my own tshirt quilt I'm making.
I'm so glad you found these methods useful with your quilting! I wasn't sure about the glue basting either....until I tried it on my t-shirt quilts and it helped tremendously....now I'm a huge fan hahaaa. Thanks for watching!
Can you explain why you start sewing with those 1x2” scraps on your seems? I’ve been sewing for years and have never seen this before! In my head, I can imagine it keeps all your ‘starting ‘ seams from puckering! ALSO, the Elmer’s glue is brilliant! Certainly a game changer! Wonderful videos!
You are so right Diane, they help keep the thread from pulling out of the needle when first starting and they help prevent the first few stitches from bunching up. These pieces are called leaders and enders and there are all kinds of fun quilts you can make with them :) Search "Leaders and Enders" on UA-cam :)
How do I sew sashing between the shirts in a collage t-shirt quilt? I love this explanation of how you sew half way to get a nice straight seam for the pieces, I just don't know if I can use this same method with sashing.
you add sashing in the same way you would for any quilt block
i wondered how to stitch these odd pieces and now i know,,i would try to make them all the same size but now i see how i can stitch different sizes together...thanks
I stayed away from this type of quilt for a long time...until I figured out how it all works...they are now my favorite
Ive never thought of using glue instead of pins...is this safe if you are using a longarm? Just afraid it might break my needle? Love the video and thank you!
Hi Dawn :) I use my Nolting Longarm for all of my quilts. Never had an issue breaking a needle or thread from the Elmer's glue in the seams. It's not a really "hard" glue, I quilt right through the seams like it's not there.
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead thank you for your quick reply! I am definitely going to try this on my next memory quilt! Take care and I've subscribed so I can see all your videos now :)
Hi I'm enjoying your videos. Thank for uploading them. I have a question regarding the scrap of fabric you start and end each seam with. Why do you do that? What is the technique? thank you.
i LIKE THE GLUE IDEA.
try it out and let me know what you think :) for me it's a life saver!!
I just found your videos and hey are very helpful. I have a question, what if the customer cut them ahead of time but they are so many different size? some are even cut in a triangle ? how would i figure out how to put them together?
Your video is WONDERFUL and very informative! I'm a little confused, and my question is this: during the cutout you use 1/2 inch measurements (8 1/2", 12 1/2", 16 1/2", etc) but you sew with 1/4 inch seams. Does this cause discreptancies in how the quilt goes together? Sorry to be so befuddled but I want to get it right! Thank you!!!
I'm so glad you ask questions!!!! When you add the 1/2" seam allowance to your blocks when you cut them out.....that is including the 1/4" seam on all sides. So.....when you cut a block at 4.5" x 4.5" ......when you sew that block into your quilt it will actually finish at 4" x 4". I hope that explains it well, and if not let me know and I'll be glad to try and help :)
Do you use a ballpoint needle because of the knits or a regular needle? Making my first t-shirt quilt following your tutorial. Thanks for all the tips
Hi Cynthia, my favorite needles to use are the Schmitz Universal needles.
Thanks for the videos they were great!! Now that the top is finished do you use batting on your tshirt quilts and what do you use for the back?
Thanks Paula! I like using an 80/20 batting in my t-shirt quilts and I really think any batting would work based on your own personal likes. I usually use 108" cotton fabric for the back because it is quick but I've also used flannel and fleece as well
Is that plain Elmer’s glue that you’re using?
18:33 I’m finishing a collage quilt with over 60 t-shirts (never again!). I have one corner that needs a partial seam and I wondered if you could help me break it down so I know which seam to do first, second, etc. I’m not sure how to send you a picture of the grid. Thanks.
do you mind sharing sharing where you purchase your thread and the size of the cone please, love your videos thank you for making these
Hi Evelyn! Thank you so much :) These are the amazing people I buy my thread from when they have a booth at the Mid-Atlantic quilt show. It is YLI UU thread. You can check out their website or do a google search for YLI thread. This is their website: memorylanequilting.com/
Hi I have been binge watching your tshirt videos. What is the name of your iron? You can turn steam off and on. My iron leaks on my blocks.
Hi Tammy, it's the Black and Decker with the extra long cord. I got it from Walmart....the purple one :)
I think I am getting this a friend asked me to do a t - shirt quilt for her daughter birthday but she had another lady started on it the lady just cut the shirts and dicarded the the rest so now I'm in a bind this helped me a lot with the grid but I'm also thinking about putting sashing in between this to is about a throw size what would you do lol
Hmmm, I think it really depends on how big your blocks are going to be. If they are all different sizes, you could still grid everything out.....only instead of a 4 inch grid....get some graph paper and do a 1 inch grid. Cut your sashing at 1.5 inches. That's what I would do :)
Thanks so much for the tutorials! Can you tell me how much you charge for your quilts?
Hi Kathy, you are welcome! If you're interested in having a quilt made I'd be glad to send you some pricing info. You can message me on Facebook at Lisa Capen Quilts or email me at lisacapenquilts@gmail.com
I am having a problem with my seams not matching up. (specific) I sewed two small pieces together, and now need to put them next to the bigger piece. The seam of the small pieces made it smaller than the larger piece I'm connecting to. I hope you understand this. HELP!!! :)
Hi Teresa! Okay, so when you cut your two smaller pieces, did you add 1/2" for your seam allowances? I'm thinking that MIGHT be where the difference is coming from, keep me updated :)
I was wondering the same thing. I’m gonna start connecting my blocks soon and after watching this video again I wondered about the same thing. Attaching a large piece to two sewn together smaller pieces
I was given a very challenging t shirt quilt dilemma. The pieces given to me are cut up in small , raggedy chunks that most do not even have room for a seam allowance. The sizes are from very large to very very small. Can you give me any insight as to how to even begin? Thank you!
Yes, I have an idea! Email me at Lisacapenquilts@gmail.com :) we can probably save those shirts by treating them like applique.
Hi Lisa, just wondering what needle size is best for sewing a t-shirt quilt? And what is that piece of fabric that you are using when you begin and end at fabric pieces?
needle is 80/12 and I use scrap fabric as leaders and enders
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead I was wondering why exactly you use the leaders and enders?
@@stephanderson4343 check out the video I did on them :) on UA-cam search Lisa Capen Quilts Leaders and enders.
Do you remove the backing from the interface prior to sewing? Or when does this get removed?
I use Pellon P44F, it has no backing and the interfacing is light and permanent, nothing to remove :)
Very helpful!!!!
yayeee I'm glad :)
What kind of stabilizer did you use? Would Feather weight "Pellon" work?
I've heard from many quilters who love using the feather weight Pellon :) My favorite is the Pellon P44F......you can't beat the price and it is soft and flowy and works great!
@@TheQuiltmakerHomestead Thank you for responding so quickly! I have ordered the Pellon P44F (JoAnn's was offering free shipping, COVID-19) and I am tacking my first quilt, while we are shut in. I am so glad I found your tutorials and that you are so detailed with your instructions. I have been sewing nearly all my life (hand work, clothing, formals, draperies, cushions, etc). As I said, this is my first quilt so you may be hearing from me again! Lol
Tried to download the graph and it says too many requests.
what is the reasoning for the little block of material at each end of stitching
Hi Judy, this video may be helpful: ua-cam.com/video/WjJ0QJSuxZg/v-deo.html
Wow! What a fantastic tip. Can't wait to try it. Thank you so much,
What size seam are you using?
1/4"
Ish I had found this tutorial before I cut my shirts
Hopefully this won't be your one and only t-shirt quilt so you'll have some tips to incorporate in your next one :)
At 10:41 starts the partial seam
Where do you get your thread?
In the last year I've started ordering my thread from Amazon. amzn.to/3g2XfKw
Lisa Capen Quilts Thanks. I don’t have a fabric store near me. It helps to know where and what kind to order. Thanks again. Love your videos!
