I learned to play Banjo from Pete Seeger’s banjo book! He certainly had a passion for uplifting the common man, which is what got him into playing banjo and folk music
I've loved and admired Pete Seeger since I was a child in the 1950s. The first album I bought was one of his, and today he's the only musician I have a picture of on my walls. He is a hero all over the globe. Thank you for this.
MAGA GOP has called Bernie Sanders "a maniac and a socialist." What would they say about Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs? ...not that I give a flyin' f***! 💙🇺🇸
This Tennessean blasted that very song on the way to my local election commission to cast my ballot for Harris. I learned of it through my maternal great-grandmother, a striker in the Flint Sit-down Strike.
One of my favorite songs is "Talkin' about a Revolution" by Tracy Chapman. It's not as famous as others BUT when that country dude recently remade "Fast Car" that put her in the spotlight.
I was fortunate enough to have seen Pete Seeger perform in person at the Lincoln Memorial, where a pre-inaugural concert for President-elect Obama was held in January 2009. He was a good man.
I'm on the side of the Union! I was once the President of Local 414 UAW! Starting as Union Stewart, then Committeeman, then President of UAW Local 414!
I remember my mom watching Pete being interviewed on Dick Cavit back in the day. I was 8 and remembered my mom saying he should be listened to. Funny that I ran across your video and remembered this conversation with my mom. Thank you.
Ani DiFranco did an updated lyrics version of this incredible song for her Album of the same name. We could really use an organizing push like there was in the 60's
Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie, and not to forget Joe Hill. Of the latter the song “The Preacher and the Slave” aka “Pie in the Sky” would be great to do a deep dive on. Hill was a protest singer, making his songs on Salvation Army tunes. So when the salvation army band was hired to blow away the protesters, they just had a band backing them up. Hill got the death penalty for a murder he didn’t commit. Thank you for bringing Pete’s music to the people. It has been in the back of my mind every day. If Pete was still alive he would have a lot to write and sing about. He gave people a voice. In America, in the German Democratic Republic, Mexico, Brazil, Argentinia; all around the world where people were pushed down by evil regimes. Don’t put people down, but help them to rise up together ❤❤❤ Love, peace and hugs from the Netherlands! Jan ua-cam.com/video/PxAh7wunhHM/v-deo.htmlsi=S0ICwNQoAW38-cqw
We now enter another era when dissent will be treated harshly by the government.. Who will stand up now as Seeger did then? Will there be new folk anthems? That kind of music will be part of what the country needs to get through intact. We will also need our opinion leaders to stand up. We will need an MLK or Gandhi - like figure to lead a campaign of non-violent non-cooperation. Protest music has always been a powerful American force. It is time now to sing.
"Sweet Home Alabama" absolutely needs a deep dive. one of my teachers in high school had us do a deep dive on that song and I can't listen to it anymore.
This was amazing to see, what a telling of the story using concision that Pete himself would be pleased with, if you ask me. This video made me think of the song 1913 Massacre, which I'm sure Pete knew and probably sang.

@@judytaylor-conley2331 thanks for mentioning U Utah Phillips. One of my favorites and quite a story teller. Saw him many times at the Philly Folk Festival back in the day.
I like Pete a lot and followed him for years. I like his songs, saw him in concert a couple of times and have his legendary 1963 Carnegie Hall concert on disc. (Check it out.) But he was also very frustrating in that he remained a Communist long after it became clear what that meant and refused to criticize Stalin for decades until finally coming around on that after the millenium. His heart was in the right place but that goes along with his biography. Had he been successful in promoting Communism when he did it would be just as totalitarian as Project 2025 is a threat now.
@@MicahScottPnD History has proven McCarthy right. The federal government was rife with communists and those that were of assistance to them, knowingly, or unwittingly. McCarty has taken the brunt of a lot of undeserved criticism. Admittedly, an imperfect man, he was right in the main.
@@rickyblackburn-n9eyou’re kidding, right. This was one of the worst periods of American political history. His mentor was Roy Cohn, an evil man who was also Trumps mentor. McCartney met his due when a respected senator from Wyoming became the target of his so called communist bs as was his wife. Neither were. And he was out to ruin them like he did so many others.l Didn’t matter, McCarthey went after everyone like the viscous dog Cohn trained him to be. Eventually, that senator committed suicide because he could no longer take the attacks and fell into a depression. That was the end of it for McCarthy. Congress and the American people got wise and got rid of him. He died at age 49 of a lonely alcoholic death. Deservedly so. He was a power hungry monster like Trump.
