This movie is simple and at the same time truly outstanding. ... Just the ending of the salesman staring at the abyss where he just sent his hunter is simply perfect.
Carey Loftin WAS NOT AT THE BAR-he NEVER APPEARED in the movie.he drove the truck, but you never see him.Thats according to Steven Spielberg, and I really think he'd know,eh?!?
A great suspenseful chase thriller with such a very simple plotline, proof you don't need TOO MUCH in your movie. It *_IS_* very-much the prototype _Jaws_ but with a truck. I love how we are never told/shown who the truck driver was, we are mainly focused on the Truck itself. Amazing how Spielberg started his career with this small television film. I would recommend doing a double-feature of _Duel_ and _The Hitcher._
My aunt showed my family this movie in probably '91 and prefaced by saying that it was one of the most suspenseful films she'd ever seen. It still frightens me because of the realness of road rage and mindless, anonymous hate, and the "victory" ending made us all jump for joy when that truck plummeted into the ravine. Kudos, Mr. Grebleips!
I love Duel! I can just feel David’s tension & paranoia every time I watch it. I especially love the scene inside the restaurant when he’s trying to figure out who the driver is. It’s a very tense moment. Dennis Weaver put on one hell of a performance as David.
I think the biggest and best example of "less is more" was the decision to NOT have the truck explode into a fireball at the bottom of the cliff, as all other vehicles do in movies.
Apparently the studios pushed for the big explosion at the end, but Spielberg refused. It makes more sense the tank was empty and the maniac truck driver was off the clock.
That character ruined the subsequent AVGN episodes for me. I hated him so much. I guess it was also the feel of that episode that didn't sit well with me though. The second I saw his face here I was tempted to stop watching. But he's actually alright to watch as just himself. Indeed, he even brings stuff to the table.
Great video - I LOVE Duel. I'm a little older than you guys (b. 1965), so I can confirm that it was normal for trucks to have multiple license plates from different states back then. There's a great video here on UA-cam where the owner of the last existing Duel truck actually lets the youtuber drive it around in a big field, teaches him the basics of shifting, etc. Totally agree about older chase movies feeling more real and having more soul. I just recently saw the chase from "The Seven-Ups" with Roy Scheider and it's incredibly gritty and organic, watching the two cars plow through the city streets and then getting out onto the highway; the way they interact with other drivers (the bus driver who warns Scheider, then the truck driver at the end) - they're not just pinging around like it's a video game.
When you think of his very early career, we kind of lost a great horror director in Steven Spielberg. But when you think of his later career, and, as a horror fan, it saddens me greatly to say it, I'm kind of glad we did.
It's heartening to see people appreciating movies from the 70s. I thought it was fascinating that someone thinks that an old BMW resembles a Plymouth Valiant. I had a 1975 Dodge Dart, which I quite similar to the Valiant in Duel.
My mother drove a 1976 Plymouth Valiant, and dad a 1977 Plymouth Volaré when I was a kid. Both were great, but susceptible to rust and crumpled easily in accidents. They wound up trading them in around the 1990s. At least the Plymouths my parents owned at the time were easy to repair, unlike most modern-day vehicles.
Just happened to see this movie on tv about 10 years ago and I thought "Let's watch it a bit." And I was glued to my seat until the very end. What a great movie!
My dad is not a huge movie guy, but there are some movies he made sure we watched as kids, and Duel was one of the ones that really stuck with me. I can still remember watching it, even thirty something years later. It’s just one of those movies that really sticks with you.
What I really enjoy about this film is careful vehicle choices and visuals of them. Spielberg specifically chose the truck model due to a more isolated cab to look more animal-like and like wise when the crew was choosing a car they carefully chose what would be considered the most "mild mannered" of automobiles, the Plymouth Valiant. Spielberg demanded it to be red and it kind of hammers home this Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad wolf or Jason with his red cape against the Kholkikos .
Another great hidden gem, the villain is what nightmares are made out of… The unseen forces of evil that drives the film. Definitely recommend this one for sure, great review fellas
You guys just became my heros!!! I had memories of this movie from when I was three years old. I never saw it again and often I thought maybe I just made it up in my head. Now I have a name to put to it. I gotta find this now.
Ahhhhh Duel. I only saw it once, way back in '04 when I picked up the DVD for like $5.00, along with 1941. This review jogged a lot of memories. It definitely holds up as an early masterpiece from Spielberg. I've just not spent enough time re-watching it countless times like I have Jaws, Close Encounters, Jurassic Park, and Raiders. That needs to change. Rental Reviews...you've inspired me to watch it again after 15 years.
I started watching this video and ten minutes in I stopped so I could go watch this movie and then come back to the video. Also Mike as the Truck Driver is amazing.
One day, my dad and I ran into this movie on TV. We didn’t know what it was but we were enraptured. Aw, back in the day when you had to flip through the 10 - 15 channels you had until you found something good.
Maybe David Mann was so traumatized by this experience that he decided to get away from the land entirely and became a boat captain. And, fearing that the maniac driver might still somehow be out to get him, he decided to start going by his childhood nickname... Quint.
This movie is dope AF. There's like literally three lines of dialogue in the entire movie, its super unique. And terrifying! If you havent seen this movie you really need to.
as a (former obviously lol)local video rental store manager this feels exactly like conversations us employees and regulars would have. Great stuff guys!
Happy to see the Nerd and Friends doing this movie. I saw it as a kid in the 80s and it really stuck with me over the years. The premise is pretty simple and the way Spielberg creates suspense throughout the film is great. Another thing I love is how he never shows the driver which almost makes you think the truck is alive (something he did throughout most of JAWS). The diner scene is fantastic and the film shows what can be done on a small budget and with heavy time constraints.
Spielberg's tradition is actually that he goes on vacation whenever his film premieres, so he doesn't have to look at reviews. The story he doesn't film on the last day was actually that he directed the final shot of JAWS from a motorboat and when picture wrapped, he speed away because he was sure the crew was going to try and drown him from all the stresses and overscheduling that had gone on.
Duel is one of the all-time great films, regardless of genre. As a kid in the late 1970s and early 1980s, my mom and I used to watch it every year when it would be shown on TV on (I think) the Labor Day weekend. It must have been the extended version on TV by then because I bought the DVD the month it came out in the 2000s and I remembered every scene.
for a simplistic film, i can't believe how much fun it is to watch. whenever i see a peterbilt, it always reminds of the truck from this movie. for an early 70's movie, it has aged pretty well.
Duel is my favourite Spielberg film. The tension is amazing, and the simplicity of it shows Spielberg's skill as a director. I always felt like it was a big influence on The Terminator, which is my favourite movie of all time.
The Terminator was actually much more influenced by Westworld- almost ripping scenes directly from it. Maybe Duel was influential in some small way, but I find that slightly unlikely since Duel was a TV movie and it's actually a mostly forgotten film by all but the most film savvy. That's not to undermine it's achievements, but it was not as lauded in the 70s and 80s, or even 90s. People just didn't really talk much about TV movies- and mostly still don't. If it was influential at all I don't think it would have been consciously so. Edit: Although I can see how you'd think that with the truck scene in T2. So, I suppose anything is possible.
Oh wow. I remember my mom telling me in detail about this movie years ago, but I didn’t know the name so I had no idea until you started talking about the plot. I made note of the interesting things she probably doesn’t know to tell her when I get a chance. Thanks for yet another entertaining movie review 👌
Thing is it probably could. That truck had a NTC 400 Cummings and a 18 speed road-ranger transmission. That truck was fast as hell, that wasnt just the movie.
Thanks for the recommendation. I paused this straight away to check it out. I'm glad I did. It's impressive how well the film works when it's just some guy being trolled by a truck.
Carey Loftin is the truck driver. He did indeed jump from the truck. The man was a legend, and drove in probably every single good car-chase movie from the 70's you could think of.
Concerning Tony's fascination with the snake lady: There's a hilarious scene in the criminally underrated 1941 where John Belushi pulls his plane up to the same gas station from this movie, and he asks that same actress, Lucille Benson, to fill it up.
Duel is awesome. I had the pleasure a few years back of seeing it at a specialty cinema in a double feature with Jaws. The big screen truly makes all the difference.
This movie fucking rules. Honestly, it's been one of my favorites since I was a kid. I love everything about it, the performances, the writing, the tension, the (unintentional) hilarity. Awesome.
@@hypnotised-clover yeah bud that's a very unpopular opinion. To each their own though. Kind of surprised you don't like jaws considering they are similar in many ways.
I love this movie. One of the underrated great. A little fact: you _do_ see the driver: he is the guy in the straw hat who looks menacingly at the protagonist in the diner. That's Carey Loftin, a professional stuntman who is also credited at the end as "the driver".
Duel is awesome. Anyone who’s ever driven a car has had an experience with a truck you can relate to I like how the truck has a load of different license plates from different states on its front, like trophies of its kills. I also always viewed the scene at the gas station at the beginning where the truck driver is checking his tyres as a preparation scene. He’s already picked his victim and now he’s readying up
Duel is amazing! It really showcased Spielberg's mastery of tension, and it was a TV favourite here in the UK in the 80s. I hesitate to even call it a TV movie, because that degrades the quality of the film as it was a proper dramatic thriller, which I believe did get a theatrical release at one point. You should totally do Dark Star next!
Tony is a dork. I watched this movie and the car DEFINITELY DID NOT start it. I He calmly passed a slow truck on a back road with his turn signal. Dude seriously.
@@ji0883 Urm do I just live a bizarre life or something? Since when was "dork" an outdated word? I literally hear people say it multiple times every day
@@ji0883 Lol to be fair if you are old enough to remember watching the movie Duel Dork is a classic curse word. The F word almost is used daily now days it will eventually not be bleeped out anymore. "Shit" and "ass" are barely bleeped nowadays when I remember the word "hell" was bleeped. Come to think of it...do they even bleep anymore or just silence the word lol? I dont remember, God I am old.
There are no clues, stop looking for them. The point of the movie is that he could have avoided it all had he just confronted him, as he had the chance to simply by waiting outside of the truck for the driver to return when it was parked outside of the restaurant.
I caught this movie on TV when I was around 8-9, I'm in my mid thirties now, and I can still remember the majority of scenes they're talking about. It was just such a compelling watch and simple enough that even a dumb kid could appreciate what was happening.
@@antoniozuquete5068 Duel is right on the same level of Jaws and I would say it's more enjoyable than E.T. for me. Indiana Jones is it's own thing entirely.
Well it's far from it, as they didn't even mention the fact that the main character David Mann is a Vietnam vet with PTSD. The whole film is about confrontation and how he in particular deals with it by trying to just avoid it, but realizes he can't in the end, he has to take action and do something about the problem facing him.
Fun fact: this movie was the basis of a clause in Spielberg's film contracts afterwards; per IMDB trivia: Some of the scenes were later reused as stock footage in an episode of the television series, The Incredible Hulk (1977). Episode: Never Give a Trucker an Even Break (1978). Obvious scenes used were the red Valiant slamming into the fence, the use of the same phantom truck in new TV footage, and the use of a similar Valiant in new TV footage. Unhappy by the discovery that footage from the movie was recycled, and unable to sue because the studio owned both the film and "Hulk" series, Steven Spielberg insisted that all his future contracts have a clause designed to protect his films from being used as stock footage.
A horror punk band where almost every song is based directly on classic horror/sci-fi movies? I would have been shocked if James wasn't a misfits fan haha
Some coworkers and I were playing a drinking game once. Basically one person would say a word and one after the other players would quickly say a word or phrase that relates. We got to the word "Semi" like the trucks, by the time my turn came up all the obvious things were said. So, in a panic I shouted "Duel!". A few of my coworkers were confused but my foreman at the time become both shocked and overjoyed that I knew about Duel.
Duel was a huge inspiration for the film Breakdown from 1997. Extremely underrated movie. Check it out, fantastic suspense all the way through and J.T.Walsh does the best performance of his career.

I watched Duel with my dad when I was a kid, then re-watched it a few years ago. It's just as good as I remember.
Tony is a dork. I watched this movie and the car DEFINITELY DID NOT start it. I
He calmly passed a slow truck on a back road with his turn signal. Dude seriously.
Dork wow haven't heard that terminology since ed edd n eddy but anyway agreed the truck started it.
Yeah im not sure how Tony comes up with that conclusion.
@@ji0883 Urm do I just live a bizarre life or something? Since when was "dork" an outdated word? I literally hear people say it multiple times every day
@@quatz1981 He's such an assnard sometimes.
James, I really love how you recreate the old style with Nathan at the beginning. Just had a HUGE nostalgia wave wash over me.
WasabiPoutine 😉👍🙏
@@Nathan.Barnatt I love your stuff as well Nathan! Top quality!! :)
My favorite Spielberg movie. Never gets old. I don't care if you never know the driver but I look for clues anyway
Nathan Barnatt looks surprisingly similar to that crazy dude with the lisp that helped you destroy the set of that AVGN Christmas Special. Lol
I know it's crazy! They should get keith apicary to guest alongside nathan barnatt
He also looks like the guy in the intro to the video
gmsllc DURRR!!!
PrematureMailbox Lol. YOU get it

Duel is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Simple and brutally effective.
One of Spielberg's best films. Richard Matheson is a great story teller too.
Matheson was never mentioned!
@@touche5616 I know, what's that about.
Really? Best? You do realize that this is the same guy that made Jaws, the Indiana Jones series, E.T....
@@antoniozuquete5068 Duel is right on the same level of Jaws and I would say it's more enjoyable than E.T. for me. Indiana Jones is it's own thing entirely.
@@antoniozuquete5068 Duel is considered the best TV film ever by many critics , and many horror aficianados hold it in very high regard.
Omg I forgot about this movie. I used to LOVE it as a kid
Easily one of the best TV movies ever made. And you wouldn’t know it by watching the suspense in action
There's a reason why this era of young filmmakers are known as The Mavericks: Spielberg, Lucas, Coppola, Scorsese, etc.

I LOVE movies that don't tell you EVERYTHING, Holding your hand through the movie. I miss when movies left questions on the table for the viewer.
Duel. Such a great movie! Suspense like Hitchock!
One of the best chase movies ever, so glad you reviewed this :)
The best analysis panel I've ever seen
I heart James' hat...The Misfits (Glenn Danzig era) were f'ing awesome.
A horror punk band where almost every song is based directly on classic horror/sci-fi movies? I would have been shocked if James wasn't a misfits fan haha
I love 70's movies too. The golden age in my opinion.
This is such a great horror/suspense movie directed by Steven Spielberg.
Steven Spielberg’s most underrated film.
I've never seen it... now I'm pumped up to watch it! lol!
It is good.
Its pretty dope.
Is that the one with kurt Russell? If yes it was a decent movie
@@paulie.walnuts2838 Featuring Snake Plissken, yes.
Great movie
I knew it (Duel) reminded me of a movie. Saw a while ago, really liked it. Watched Duel now, really good too.
When I was a little kid & even now the dual truck is my favorite chase vehicle. Watching the truck terrorize the road always put a smile on my face
One of the best movie's ever. My husband and I love to watch Duel everytime its on T.V.
I loved this movie as a kid, and I still do now of course. I actually had very few VHS tapes that were personally mine, and this was one of them.
Duel was a great movie it ranks up there with my favorite The Car.
if you've not seen it, you might like Christine
Didn't they spoof the car in regular show?
Oh wow lol. This is an underrated one i haven't seen in a while. Pretty suspenseful. That poor little car went through a lot
A new Rental Review, and boooom its officially a better day.
Nice. Thanks so much for reviewing this movie! I've memorized this movie shot for shot.
"Look, uh....I want you to cut it out."

Omg, I love Nathan Barnatt :)
I remember in Knight Rider, when the truck Goliath falls from the cliff, I think it's a clear reference to Duel :D
