Video of loco coming out of water : Hon Dr Nick Smith MP / Smith Cranes from MP Nick Smith's Facebook page : / 1163713977452664
"Kiwirail loco successfully fished out of Picton Harbour. 10 hours prep -10 min lift.
Big tx to project partners Marlborough Commercial Diving and Kenny Barging Picton, and also to teams from Kiwirail and Port Marlborough. Credit to all to have recovery completed 55 hours after accident.
Last job tonight is to contain and recover minor fuel release. Tomorrow’s job for Smithcrane is now trucking loco across on ferry tomorrow to Kiwirail Hutt workshops." Smith Cranes
Thanks to all those awesome Picton locals up at the lookout who made the long day enjoyable, were fine with the drone being flown, a big shoutout to AD William Small from Hula Hala Mala Naked Gorillas (naked party animal and beer brewer) who went and got me food at no charge, Picton Liqour, The Thai Panda, The Kung Fu Panda, Name with held port employee who jump started my car at midnight, Graeme from the Auto Workshop, and the Dutch guy in the Landcruiser.
A big thumbs down to the lowsy, lying, Port manager ( I ll name him later) who came up to the lookout going off like a naked gorilla about the drone,
    Regarding the drone flight :
As someone who flies drones every day of the week , the assessment on weather I can and if I do , starts with :
A, is it safe to people on the ground and any conflict with any aviation.
B is it allowed, this is always done by consulting Airshare, if Airshare had indicated ANY prohibited operations in Picton, aerodromes, hospitals, I would not have even come to Picton or organized permission. The only notation on Airshare was regarding giving way to Hang gliders. Local council rules are vague regarding activities in , and above their public spaces, In Auckland, where I normally live, it is permitted in almost all public spaces, providing other users are not upset. I was up at the lookout for 15 hours. People were always asked if they had an issue ( no one did, including, at times port workers and other officials, and I took off and landed down a track to keep clear of the crowd. The drone sat on my car bonnet ready to go the whole time, NO ONE, including visiting Police council and Port workers said I could not fly it. I made other flights during the day, down the bushline and over water clear of the wharf to film arriving ferries. The night footage on this video, the flight was fully “shielded” by surrounding terrain, 30 metre cranes and light towers, and high hills immediately within 200 metres of my flight. Regarding the Port guys accusation of flying “directly over the salvage operation was a total lie. The drone has a 4 times zoom, = to a 200mm still camera, I had no need to be overhead anything, except the WATER, which I have since researched more and the answer to this is that it’s a “grey area” who owns the airspace immediately above water and the sea especially. I have had a number of previous contacts with CAA and in discussions with them always invite them to comment on any of my hundreds of drone videos, (a lot shot over water) on anything I should not be doing so as to avoid issues. The Port person ONLY called the Police because I argued about his authority to stop me and refused to stop filming and leave altogether, totally an unlawful demand. I was then accused of flying over the port which I did, an empty wharf, to land as soon as possible to get the problem resolved when told by the Port worker to “land immediately” So the Police wasted their time to come out and deal with this , and the key thing here “who was harmed, what was damaged” by my drone flight. The Police , and CAA are being used by authorities , security etc to “ënforce” the operation of drones that pose no risk to any aviation , or people at all.
Then there is the issue of no one complying with COVID restrictions. Well, that may have a lot to do with what we saw in our 15 hours at the lookout and be behind the actions of the Port worker,. Ferries coming and going with cars, caravans, camping gear, you name it, and whilst the Port guy was harassing me about my “dangerous “drone flight over open water, most of the workers at his port, and numerous rubber neckers NOT on duty or essential at the train recovery operation were not social distancing OR wearing masks. This is not just what my drone saw but many people had powerful binoculars. Police also made no attempt in 15 hours to break up the “dangerous” crowd of people in their numerous visits breaching every COVID rule, but arrived to take a complaint about a drone flying over the water……… Its all theatre. Everyone must be stressed to the max to go off like the man did. I hope that you slept well and have woken to another beautiful day in the special place that Picton is. Safe travel home.

We used to build trains in NZ but apparently it's cheaper to take money out of New Zealand for Chinese built units that need modification and continual repair.
I know of one unit that took months from new to get running correctly.... But I guess like most companies, the wealth of the entire country takes a back seat over the profit on the books. (Like the practice of making a group redundant then hiring them back at a higher rate... because on the books it makes each years profit look better even if the long forecast is a loss of money and staff investment in that company.

Hi Geoff, Re. Drone use: I trust your experience with such situations no worries, but I do have some concerns about trigger happy drone operators that see your vids and think they can do the same thing.
Picton airspace can be quite busy during the day, but it is the rescue heli that can turn up and land at any time - day or night. I doubt Airshare have this info. [ I'm not suggesting that you are the risk. I've seen your stuff long ways back. You are aware of just about every risk going!]

And Geoff is hardly an essential worker and had no reason to travel from ChCh, or wherever from, to film this, considering he wasn’t even allowed near the place. He doesn’t care about regulations.

And now it’s time for Thomas The Tanked Engine.
Thomas The Tanked Engine was bored.
It was lockdown, again, and he and Percy The Paralytic Passenger Car were sitting parked up in the Picton rail yards, with nothing to do.
“Oh Percy”, Thomas said, “I want something to do to take away the boredom. What can we do?”
“I don’t know, Thomas”, Percy replied. “There’s no-one to talk to, and even the rail ferry Aratere is parked up back in Wellington, so we can’t watch Sammy The Radio-Controlled Shunter take wagons on and off the boat”.
“Have you ever played with one of those remote-controlled trains”, Thomas asked Percy.
“They’re easy to use”, Thomas boasted. “You just move a couple of switches and it does whatever you want it to. I could do it with my eyes shut”, he continued.
“I can see the remote over there”, Percy commented. “And it’s quiet, so there’s no-one else around, apart from Big Jim, the freight ferry. And he won’t tell on us”.
So Thomas went and got the remote control, and started showing off to Percy.
“Look Percy, you hit this switch, and it hooks up to these empty tank wagons. And then you hit this switch, and it goes backwards”, Thomas said, happily.
“Um, aren’t you getting rather close to the ferry berth, Thomas?” Percy exclaimed as Thomas continued to play with the Shunter.
“No, Percy, all I have to do is hit this switch…” Thomas started replying, when Percy interrupted him with a cry.
“Thomas, watch out for the linkspan….Thomas….THOMAS!!!!!”
All of a sudden, there was a loud noise, followed by a big splash, as Sammy The Shunter, and a wagon, went over the end of the linkspan, and down into the water.
“Oh Thomas, Percy said, “you’ve really done it this time!!!! What are you going to do now? Thomas? THOMAS???”
Percy turned, to see no sign of Thomas, but heard a chuckle from Big Jim the Freight Ferry, as it rapidly departed the Picton Port, followed by a faint “wey hey”.
    THOMAS THE TANKED ENGINE!

This incident of the diesel falling off the key side reminds me of the episode of Thomas where Salty accidentally derails himself off the edge of the docks and tumbles into the sea, sinking him and (presumably) his driver. But thankfully he was recovered by the cranes and was still in good sprit. I wonder if that was intentional the creators of Thomas paid tribute to this incident.

I'm as much fascinated by the crane lift as the whole salvage procedure.
Is it two crane operates in a perfect mind mend to keep it so stable and level, or is there some form data connection between the two cranes since they look the same model crane to me for such a thing to be compatible..

Is that how the accident happened

    • @netking66
      @netking66 3 роки тому +1

Yes. There is currently one ferry (Aratere) capable of taking rail wagons (two new ones are on order and will replace the current fleet). Wagons to be transported are shunted onboard with this locomotive. There are a few empty wagons between the loco and wagons being shunted so (I think) the loco does not usually enter the ship. Link span is normally up when no ship berthed.
