I was about 10 years old when this aired and I thought it was the greatest thing I ever saw. Took me over 30 years to finally get a copy of it. Happy to be able to share it with those that feel the same.
So many songs of the folk and folk- rock era were not only melodic and accessible to players of all levels but also carried themes that were universal, soul searching , and teaching lyrics. P.S. so nice all who will play this to their grandsons. For those of us with granddaughters as well, just replace "my son" with " sweet one". Doesn't lose any meaning and includes everyone we love.
We don't have anything like this. A vibrant entertainment industry that mixes together with, and supports protesters with new music. This song for example, appeared in church services around the country. Peter, Paul and Mary, The Smothers Brothers, Melanie and other heavy hitmakers wrote the soundtrack of the protest movement of the '60's.
I wouid sing this to my grandson. He had 2 Irresponsible self obsessed parents,I raised him. We were close and still are.He turned out fine. Lots of life lessons in songs.
What gets me the most about them is their sincerity and passion. I grew up watching their specials on PBS and could never get enough of them, I was mesmerized. I've recently started listening to them again. No musicians today have the depth they had and with lyrics that didn't make people cringe (due to profanity).
BrickPa No sadly. Now it is all auto-pilot. Perform for an hour 45 then do the unearned encore or two of them. I will say though Prince still does it old school.
Thank you for putting this up here. I remember watching it when it was first broadcast, and I remember crying at it's beauty. Almost 40 years later, the effect is still the same. Damn, how I wish we could have held on to that feeling of peace and unity.
peter paul and mary are so unrecognized to todays niave generation. i think society would smile more if people would stop and take a listen. just like stop and smell the flowers. RIP Mary Travers, you make me want to be a better man every day :)
I've loved Peter, Paul, & Mary for over 40 years. They were part of the music we listened to at Scout Camp on Staff CQ Duty overnights. I was fortunate enough to be able to see them live on their Reunion Tour several years ago. Mary, you will be sorely missed. Peter and Paul, I know you are missing her more than any of us can know. Shalom. You will live forever in our hearts. I know you are with God in heaven.
The world is just not the same without Mary Traver's heart and voice! The Good Lord has taken her away much too soon. God rest her soul. The heavenly chorus has gotten immeasurably better.
OmG, Peter, Paul, Mary and the Smothers' Bros. I grew up listening to these ppl. and I love folk music so much. I miss the peaceful protests songs against the VietNam war which I was vehemently against, as I am with these two we are in. However, that is neither here nor there. I just love their message of peace. RIP, Mary. Thank you guys for the music. I will teach it to my grandchildren.
israeli public radio just played this. for the first time in these weeks of almost constant rockets falling on my town and the villages around, the build-up of tears came out. "I really don't know" - why we and the people on the other side of the nearby border are living in a world of such woe.
mieliav Thats easy people fight over land more than any thing else to preserve themselves as a people and a nation. We are running out of land and growing in numbers, There is an old saying: Land they don't make it like they used to. I hope things cool down In Israel
I fulfilled a lifelong dream and saw them live back in the 80's. They were showing their ages by then, but still full of energy and spirit. I was amazed at how stong their voices were, especiallly Mary's. It was such a thrilll to see them.
It's eerie... I was thinking of this song randomly a couple of days ago, not knowing that Mary would pass a few days later. Thank you for the music, Mary. Sing among the angels.
I am so thankful I was able to see PPM in concert a few times. Those memories will always live in my heart. Their songs have touched the lives of generations. May they continue to live on forever.
I believe this is episode of the Smothers Brothers show I saw around 67 or 68. I was eleven years old, but this performance was really moving and memorable for me. The message is even more important today. Thanks so much for the upload.
My dad used to sing this to me and my siblings to get us to sleep at night. He may not have been Elvis, but he had a soothing singing voice. I want to cry listening to this because I wish he could sing it to his first granddaughter....
What a great video. Life was so much fun back then. THanks PP&M for always giving us such good music. I hope Mary's family finds peace in their memories when they think of all of us that loved her too, just in a less intimate way.
They been times I wanmted to see Paul & Mary live but never got the chance but their music and Mary will live on forever RIP Mary Travers you were the voice & centre of one of the greatest duos in folk music.
Brings back amazing memories, happy memories, life was so much simpler back then and the music so relevant and it made you want to join in. No need for special effects just good music and real artists that could sing, write and play instruments without a huge entourage. Thank you so much.
I was a kid when I watched this originally aired. It was a departure from the usual Smothers Brothers show. It Blew me away. I decided to become a Hippie at that point. Thanks P.P.& M
Mary you were so beautiful and such a great voice. Enjoyed it for such a long time in my life The music will live on forever in our hearts thnxxxxx Well I've got a hammer And I've got a bell And I've got a song to sing All over this land It's the hammer of justice It's the bell of freedom It's the song about love between my brothers and my sisters All over this land You did it Mary thank you Rest in Peace peace to all you Tubers, feeling sad that's Mary's day has done
If my memory serves me correctly this was the way the Smothers Brothers closed out their final TV show. I've always missed their show, but they highly upset the powers that be at that time - I like to believe the Smothers Brothers won out in the end.
this is one of favorite songs to bring peace - hope- to dying world--eveyone please have good safe days-God is always with us forever--Jesus Christ-Holy Spirit-God is three in 1 forever-nothing can change this fact
I am a newbie for the folk song, even thogh I had heard some of PP&M's songs, I just knew that Mary has passed away, really sorry for that! RIP Mary! What a perfect trio they are! They always gave us enjoyment with beautiful rhythms and meaningful lyrics. Thank you for that!
GOSH, PETER, PAUL & MARY… DAY IS DONE WAS THE FLIP SIDE TO “ JET PLANE”, A POPULAR SONG SUNG BY MARY. DAY IS DONE COULD’VE BEEN A NUMBER ONE HIT BECAUSE OF THAT LIVE PERFORMANCE AND THE HAND CLAPPING AT THE END. Kenneth Huang 9/12/23.
It is exceptional outstanding songs. They are performiong so nice and no matter how many years had gone, their songs are so good to listen.Powerful,Awesome,Wonderful,Fantastic and......!!
PPMs music and songs will go on and on even though Mary is now singing in a much better place R.I.P. Mary Travers {Beautiful with a voice like an angel}. Great video! and one of the Smother Bros looks to be playing a Guild D55!!! Cant get any better. Wow!!!
PP&M always met the fans after the concert even in recent times. I gave mary a poem I had written for her and she bent down and kissed me. And peter called me his little plowshare for a button I was wearing. I remember when this first aired and have been looking for it for a long time. Bless you for sharing it. This sends shivers up and down my spine.
@Zswift1 Not only America. I very much regret that they never performed here in Ireland. I have been a PP&M fan since the 60s Now I will never see them!!Sleep in peace, Mary.
Yes, how I miss it, too! And I more than heartily second what Mr. Baxter says. It is almost suffocating to listen to this song, which is really more than a song, and compare what it evokes to the world of today.
Don't know if it's Peter or Paul singing the opening of this great song, but he sounds a lot like Dick Smothers! My parents loved the Smothers Brothers & bought their albums, my younger brothers & enjoyed them & wanted to watch the TV show, but it was on like 10 p.m. Sunday nights & we weren't allowed to stay up that late, so we tried to sneak into the living room. Sometimes we managed to catch a glimpse. To this day I still love Peter, Paul and Mary--great harmonies!
Thank you Mary for enriching a generation's struggle for justice and peace. You will be missed greatly but your music lives one.
Yeah they could have a full time job preaching justice and peace in Moscow these days.
I watched this on TV my senior year at Michigan.....we all were dancing with the audience
Me too
There will never be anyone like Mary Travers again. The world is darker now without her. A light has went out.
Ron Delby I think you mean... "A light has *gone* out".
Thanks for the correction. Yes Noel is and he is my friend.
Who is Paul Yarrow ?
The short one.
@Ron Delby are you a Geordie? "A light has went out" is a very Geordie thing to say.
I was about 10 years old when this aired and I thought it was the greatest thing I ever saw. Took me over 30 years to finally get a copy of it. Happy to be able to share it with those that feel the same.
How cool to invite the whole audience onto the stage with the performers!
So many songs of the folk and folk- rock era were not only melodic and accessible to players of all levels but also carried themes that were universal, soul searching , and teaching lyrics.

This is a song that is about peace and love. I can never get enough of this song!
I never understood this song until I had children. It is tear jerking and 100% correct.
It was the final Smothers Brothers show. A very unique ending.
I wouid sing this to my grandson. He had 2 Irresponsible self obsessed parents,I raised him. We were close and still are.He turned out fine. Lots of life lessons in songs.
God bless you Lee!!
The 60's. You just had to be there to understand it. Lot wrong with it but by GOD this is an example of what was RIGHT about it
We need it all back now more than ever. I'm glad Mary isn't around to see what we've become.
Amen to your comment and Kenton's post.
I sang this to my sons thirty years ago. I will be singing to my grandsons now.
Hopefully he will be singing it to his son as well. Peace, Brother
I love how they involved the audience!! We need more of this today....much much more !!!!
What gets me the most about them is their sincerity and passion. I grew up watching their specials on PBS and could never get enough of them, I was mesmerized. I've recently started listening to them again. No musicians today have the depth they had and with lyrics that didn't make people cringe (due to profanity).
And Now more than ever.
Harry Chapin was the same way! You always felt like you were sitting with him in his living room! Another example of how only the good die young!
Is it even possible to imagine artists mixing with an audience like this today?
BrickPa No sadly. Now it is all auto-pilot. Perform for an hour 45 then do the unearned encore or two of them. I will say though Prince still does it old school.
Thank you for putting this up here. I remember watching it when it was first broadcast, and I remember crying at it's beauty. Almost 40 years later, the effect is still the same. Damn, how I wish we could have held on to that feeling of peace and unity.

I know you are with God in heaven.
I have never listened to this song and not had tears in my eyes: This is a true anthem, and what music should be about!
We all fell in love with Mary - or at least I did.
I loved her when I first saw her on TV in the early 60s.
I think Mary and Emmy Lou Harris share the same trait. The only men who do not love them have never seen or heard them!
The world is just not the same without Mary Traver's heart and voice!
The Good Lord has taken her away much too soon. God rest her soul. The heavenly chorus has gotten immeasurably better.
Mary - we owe you so much for standing strong. Always in the forefront, always committed to Social Justice. Thank you for a life so well lived

Sweet Mary, rest in peace. Thank you for your beautiful voice.
God bless you...

Thanks P.P.& M
We can all carry these words and love with us always, TY.

Great song. Great performers.
They helped mold and change the way that I looked at the world. Thanks Mary. You lived well.
End of the Smothers Brothers series, the finale. The End. Sadly.
Mary Travers was marvelous! Always!
I remember watching this when is was original shown on TV. I thoroughly enjoyed it then and thoroughly enjoy it now. Classic TV
Jennifer Warnes catching the spirit in the song.. great video!
I was in that audience. They gave away tickets for the TV show taping to UCLA students. It was more fun than it looked, even.
what a event that will never be seen again
I remember this particular show from 40+ years ago. Never forgot it. Thank you 2old2Rock for this timeless clip !
So Beautiful.....i am choked up...smiling....❤❤❤❤❤❤😅
RIP Mary, your voice was part of my childhood
Your voice will remain in my heart always.
Peace Mary.
If my memory serves me correctly this was the way the Smothers Brothers closed out their final TV show. I've always missed their show, but they highly upset the powers that be at that time - I like to believe the Smothers Brothers won out in the end.
It wasn't the final show but the writers were on strike so they did a show that was almost entirely musical performances.
Thanks for the clarification.
I remember when this was on tv. What a special night that is!
excellent tribute!!!! thanks for posting this!
this is one of favorite songs to bring peace - hope- to dying world--eveyone please have good safe days-God is always with us forever--Jesus Christ-Holy Spirit-God is three in 1 forever-nothing can change this fact
Mary looks absolutely stunning here
We'll miss you Mary!!!!! Thank you for the songs and the messages!!!!
I had forgotten all about this song--I used to sing it at girl's camp. A great song. Thanks for the upload!

It is exceptional outstanding songs. They are performiong so nice and no matter how many years had gone, their songs are so good to listen.Powerful,Awesome,Wonderful,Fantastic and......!!
Where are the artists today like PPM ? Lord knows America needs them all over again!
Wow the audience walked on stage and sang, could never happen this days...
PPMs music and songs will go on and on even though Mary is now singing in a much better place R.I.P. Mary Travers {Beautiful with a voice like an angel}.
Great video! and one of the Smother Bros looks to be playing a Guild D55!!! Cant get any better. Wow!!!
RIP Mary. We will miss you!
Wooow!!! Amazing how tgey pulled the audience in and made them part of tge performance.
Heaven's choir just improved tenfold.
The words to the second verse ring true today. We shall inherit what mankind has done .
I saw them at the Sanger Theater in New Orleans in may, '83. Awesome performance in an awesome venue.
A 60's classic moment.-----------------------MJL, 75 y/o
PP&M always met the fans after the concert even in recent times. I gave mary a poem I had written for her and she bent down and kissed me. And peter called me his little plowshare for a button I was wearing. I remember when this first aired and have been looking for it for a long time. Bless you for sharing it. Back in the days when Peter has hair and Mary is svelte (relatively)... what a nice song, what bittersweet personal memories
Love the spirit on this one! :-)
A magical time. A Camelot. Jesuit values of service and honor.
Como é prazeroso ouvir as músicas que esse trio canta. Ouço todos os dias. É contagiante. Brasil
Faz parte de minha infância e juventude. Lindas lembranças🇧🇷 BRASIL
Amo Amooooo Amoooo
I'm not sure what is wrong with it. It was all right! The world needs to come together, join hands and sing when these times improve once again.
Thank you Mary.
Pray you never become ill.
@Zswift1 Not only America. I very much regret that they never performed here in Ireland. I have been a PP&M fan since the 60s Now I will never see them!!Sleep in peace, Mary.
Didn't think there were so many people in the audience!!!
Eternally fresh, and sad that it still needs to be sung.
Cool, mellow, harmony, acoustic instruments -- hey, I know - real music!
Wow I had forgotten ... Thanks - Don Barone
Those were actually good days as compared to what is now. Too many wars and they just love to fight - those warmongers.
Yes, how I miss it, too! And I more than heartily second what Mr. Baxter says. It is almost suffocating to listen to this song, which is really more than a song, and compare what it evokes to the world of today.
I love it, I have met them three times
A lovely New Year's Eve sendoff. Thanks Dave.
I love this song. -day is done.
This needs to be longer
was looking for nick drake's "day is done" and am enchanted by this......
I think Peter Yarrow's contributions to the group are underrated.
I sang this to my son when he was a baby
Thanks for this live version!
What a moment that was.
One groovy group of folks!!!
Don't know if it's Peter or Paul singing the opening of this great song, but he sounds a lot like Dick Smothers! This song reminds me of my father
That was Jennifer Warnes, together with Donovan. all true entertainers, not afraid to mix with the crowd.
Love this, but equally love the version by Nana Mouskouri from her passport album
To be honest, I prefer the version of Nana.
Very very good !!!
I like this song a lot.
This is so good
