Information war against Russia

  • There is a lot of talk about Russian information warfare but less about how the West can influence the discourse in Russia. In this video I argue that the West should not use the same tools as Russia, because we want to achieve the opposite results.
I then discuss the role that UA-cam plays in Russia, and why Russian UA-cam channels may be worth supporting.
    0:00 Intro
    1:04 Russian information war
2:39 Why the West can't do the same
3:48 Goals with Western information war

6:46 The role of UA-cam in Russia
    8:34 Russian UA-cam channels
9:08 Russia tries to silence UA-camrs

There are a lot of problems with impersonation scams right now, where people take my thumbnail picture and pretend to be me in the comments section. Typically they will ask you to contact them on another platform like Telegram or WhatsApp. Please don’t do that. It’s not actually me.
If you want to get in contact with me outside of UA-cam, then Mastodon is my preferred social media platform (@anderspuck@krigskunst.social). I'm also somewhat active on LinkedIn. You can also find my email address on my website, but please notice that I get a lot of email, and it's hard to keep up.

The most powerful response to authoritarian lies is the truth. Most the Germans in the DDR watched West German TV. Voice of America and similar transmitters simply presented the same news and programming as regular western TV. THIS WAS VERY POWERFUL. I lived in Bulgaria afterwards and they were very moved by the western information they received. Most had some kind of green house on their balconies and used the metal frame as an aerial.

I agree. The truth. When the "free and democratic" West is going to talk about Gonzalo Lira - tortured and killed in Ukraine's prison for speaking the truth? When Julian Assange will be freed for speaking the truth? Or "the truth" is the truth only when it plays in West's advantage? When the truth about Covid-19 terror is Europe is going to be discussed, as governments were forced to buy vaccines in the hundreds of billions of dollars? When the truth about over 30,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza in few months will be front and center in MSM, and Israel sanctions proportionally?

Vlad has repeatedly talked about the need to "politicize" Russians and Russia but I can't remember him ever saying how that might be done, but perhaps I've just missed it. I'm not impressed by Western efforts to influence the information space there, as you say, it seems to mostly be Russian expats who provide the best and most trusted channels which wield the most influence.

    Excellent ‘couple of thoughts’. Thanks.
I am now inclined to go ahead and financially support the few channels that you suggested, as we maybe should all do.
HOWEVER, it feels weird and a bit wrong to support channels that I don’t understand: I don’t speak russian. I have no idea what they say (I quickly browsed a few).
Here is my suggestion: let’s all go on their channels and send them this feedback: provide subtitles in English.
I can see how it might be a problem, though:
    - more work, more cost, more difficult
    - it might make the channels look like foreign propaganda in the eyes of the Russian public.
    Any thoughts about that?
How to be practical instead of theoretical and try to help them out.
Correction: Max Catz is providing subtitles. Good. It’s quite a bit of work to follow, though 😁 … I’m used to listen to UA-cam while I do other things.
