I'm reminded of chucklefucks in Mount&Blade multiplayer that buy two pavise shields, one in the offhand, the other on the back so they cannot get attacked in the back.
Like half the comment section, I thought this was wielding two shields to continue the series. Not that I mind hearing about your shield-guy, but now I kinda want to hear you struggle with that.
Cheers Matt. Thanks to your review, I took the plunge and ordered a 1066 kite shield from Shields Plus. I received the shield in NL (I believe it was their first post-Brexit EU order), and can confirm that I'm really pleased with it. A great shield for a very reasonable price. Shields Plus also painted it for me - I started with one of the standard Bayeux Tapestry dragon/griffin(?) designs, requested some small changes and an altered colour scheme, and it turned out very well. As you said, certainly good service. They'll definitely be my go-to supplier if I fancy another shield at some later date. The other suppliers I found online either offered cheap-looking, unconvincing 1066 shields, or else were extremely overpriced. So thanks again for your well-informed review video, it was precisely what I was looking for. I'll be sure to subscribe to your channel, since I'm still on the lookout for additional huscarl equipment and related HEMA instruction.
On a subject unrelated to shields, Matt, do you think that you could review the monofilament sword in the 1995 movie "Johnny Mnemonic"? Monofilament is not fishing line in this case but a thread made from a very strong material only one molecule thick. that makes it essentially a sword that consists of nothing but edge.
There are now some thoughts that originally the kite shields were gripped with a pair of leather straps in one hand behind the boss with a guige (apologies if spelt wrong) to support. This is from images on the bayeux tapestry images. The feasibility of those style is currently being looked at by a couple of re-enactment groups I know of.
Another awesome video! Id be interested in a video series revolving around what historical figures would have used. Ex: King Richard I seems to have lived between the use of heater shields and norman kite shields; which would be more likely for him to have used? Or the sword attributed to Edward III doesn't appear to have actually been his, are there any other likely candidates?
5:30 for Dual wielding shields. Notice the smaller one is grabbed by the edge and held on the height of a right shoulder, very interesting technique indeed.
Perhaps there were a lot of center grips in stock and rather than purchasing new ones to replace them, the old ones were just modified to minimize cost.
It's possible (as I worry when using a shield) that an arrow would pierce the arm if it struck the center... the boss only protects the middle of the forearm, so might have been done away with over time, being seen as not entirely useful. Also, I bought a similar heater shield from Museum Replicas and-- don't ya know it-- they now offer both unpainted and custom designs! Arg!
Speaking of shields, do you have any insights on the "longshield" shown in a lot of the German texts? Were these ever used outside of judicial duels? Are there any surviving examples? Those spikes, would they be steel, or just wood? Just how practical are the things?
The man, the meme, the legend: Matt Easton. ...also well played for baiting us here, seriousely expecting a video about duel-wielding shields, you know your subscribers well.
Matt you tease, making us think we'd get a dual shields video. Which, ought to be doable if one is say a large shield and the other a buckler sized, you can punch with the buckler.
Were all kite shields strapped like that (similar to a heater) or did some of them have functional bosses? I think shad's kite shield has a functional boss, but I don't know which was common (or when they switched historically).
Will they make an assembly for wearing the shield on your right arm? How about having four straps on the back so I could use it on my right or left arm? HEMA is not very kind to left-handers...
Hopefully not. Ideally, an arrow gets stuck in the shield but doesn't go all the way through. Even if and arrow does penetrate, it still won't necessarily go through your arm since there's still a lot of area on the shield where your arm isn't and even if it goes through the one (relatively) small part where your arm is behind you'll hopefully have some form of armor on your arm, either the sleeve of a mail shirt, a gamebeson, or even just some sort of bracer.
I thought that historical shields were made of something like plywood with layers of thin wood glued into shape with some kind of animal glue? I was pretty sure that Roman scutum were made like plywood, or maybe more like carefully arranged particle board with strips of wood being glued into shape? I think I spelled a scutum right.
So ok. Not two shields. lol. I have tried a kite with straps like that. They work well for a heater but for a kite having your arm vertical, with you fist pointing to the sky is better. faster, more maneuverable, and less tiring. This is for a footman of course. For a horseman all the depictions show a vertical arm so you can hold the horse reins. If you make a square of the strap. A d ring in each corner with a single buckle. Then you can switch grips. Does that make sense?
Can you buy these in the USA? I've been looking for a good solid Heater shield for sparring. Most heater shields you find for sale around here are wall hanger fantasy decorations, not fit for sparring.
I could be wrong but I would think a strapped shield would have a rigid grip so you could control the shield easier. again not an expert nor have I looked at any historical examples but it seems like the controls would be a bit sloppy
do shields plus do ancient Greek style hoplon shields? only because I think they would be way more effective then the little bosk (or however it's spelt) shield.
thank you sir. then its settled. at that thickness I should focus on reinforcing the front cover & rim instead of adding another layer of plywood, is that correct?
Man, I was studying when I received the notification and I thought the video was about fighting with a shield in each hand... Which I've seen being requested as a topic, by the way.
I know this is likely a bit off topic but where did you get the warhammer behind you second from the top on the wall. I've seen it in a few of your other videos and i've tried searching for it online but to no avail.
"By the 12th Century they did away with them" wrong in the 12th century some of the kite shields used by Knights (Flat Topped Triangular Kite Shields) would've have a boss on them. I do 12th Century Living History where everything we do has been researched and submitted to the society head with 3 separate pieces of evidence and I know that one of the guys in my region has a Bossed Flat Top Kite Shield and holds the rank of Knight in the society.
As dumb as it is, now I have to ask... is it better to have one shield and a free hand to maybe help moving it, giving you better maneuverability, or could the use of two shields, assuming there's not even a stick on the ground, be advisable against an opponent? I guess it could make sense if you're being pelted with arrow fire from different directions, but other than that I can't really tell if it makes any sense at all.
As with many, I thought this was dual-wielding shields. Ah well. Completely unrelated, but I've just realized why maces are so nasty; they're basically pommels on the end of a stick!
I'm a Shields plus Shields obsessive, who has accessed the Internet for the first time today. How many Shields plus Shields videos are there out there? It will be amazing to find out! We had friend bring back bucklers from the UK to Oz. Shields plus advised they used to ship international but had orders go missing to often. The bucklers are great tho!
Matt, we need a dual wielding shields video now.
I thought you'll cover dual wielding shields. Disappointed.
Now Matt has to make a video on it.
Just wait for my video on what weapons fantasy goblins should use.
You could talk about Judical dueling shields as well. Those are basically the love child of pavise and a spear.
As did I, but I'm not disappointed! Imma go ask them if they can make me a scutum.
I want a dual wielding shields video!
Shield plus shield fighting style. Shield dual wielding. We want to see more on dual shield combat!
dual shielding you could say
Beat me to it, Raspberry.
* He actually did it *
Never mind, this isn't about dual wielding shields...
Shameful display!
How about tri-wielding shields? Two in hands and one on back.
and one on the chest. for balance
A battle cube?
I'm reminded of chucklefucks in Mount&Blade multiplayer that buy two pavise shields, one in the offhand, the other on the back so they cannot get attacked in the back.
Like half the comment section, I thought this was wielding two shields to continue the series.

Give it to your daughter to paint. I'm sure it'd come up pretty
Tullio238 HAHAHA YES.
Matt! You used that frame as the thumbnail just to screw with us, didn't you?!
It's a common trope. Obviously, the edge will shatter to bits if you try to do this IRL.
Dual

There are now some thoughts that originally the kite shields were gripped with a pair of leather straps in one hand behind the boss with a guige (apologies if spelt wrong) to support. Thanks for the vid, so you said they changed from boss shields to straps over time, why?
dual wield them shields
If you want a customized shield, remember to *thin your paints.*
My five year old daughter just saw Wonder Woman, and started asking for a "real shield" ever since. Now we have a place to shop! Thanks!
Another awesome video! Id be interested in a video series revolving around what historical figures would have used. Ex: King Richard I seems to have lived between the use of heater shields and norman kite shields; which would be more likely for him to have used? Hey, Matt, what kind of paint would you recommend for painting shields?
Matt, would you happen to know where to find a good quality rotella (renaissance round shield) for Bolognese fencing?
I use a steel one from The Knight Shop
Thank you!
>Sees title and thumbnail
>The madman actually made a dual wielding shield video
>Disappointment.jpg
like everyone else I thought this was about dual shielding. The comment section has spoken, we need that video.
5:30 for Dual wielding shields. Notice the smaller one is grabbed by the edge and held on the height of a right shoulder, very interesting technique indeed.
Perhaps there were a lot of center grips in stock and rather than purchasing new ones to replace them, the old ones were just modified to minimize cost.
the canvas thing is amazing tbh, i always wanted to paint a shield
So Matt, what's your favourite style of shield, both irrespective and respective of appropriate weapons?
Picked up one of these shields at TORM. It is suffering a bit after sparring but it's still going.
What are some of the benefits and downsides over wooden vs metal bucklers?
It's possible (as I worry when using a shield) that an arrow would pierce the arm if it struck the center... the boss only protects the middle of the forearm, so might have been done away with over time, being seen as not entirely useful. Also, I bought a similar heater shield from Museum Replicas and-- don't ya know it-- they now offer both unpainted and custom designs! Arg!
thoughts on the viability of an ice-pick shield grip?
Thanks for the information I had been searching and searching without much luck. :)
Matt ,I just watched Forged in Fire episode where they had to make Spiked Shields and it intrigued me ,so could you make a video about them.
For some reason I really like the look of wicker shields although I don't know how effective they would have been.
Kite shields had straps. A very small number may have had functional boss grips, but generally the kite shield has straps.
Will they make an assembly for wearing the shield on your right arm? How about having four straps on the back so I could use it on my right or left arm?
HEMA is not very kind to left-handers...
Great video, I will have to take a look at this company. Also would love to see some videos on historical shields. That would be great.
They only sell to Britain would love to buy here in Texas but hey what can you do.
I'd love to buy in Arizona here.
BoxBear
Befriend a Brit, and pay for them to buy and ship it to you. That's the best workaround for international shipping, lol
Pssst! (whispers) Maybe the guy who runs this page and also runs a retail business could help?
Nice,,,, Would the Men At Arms and Knights of the 1100-1200s had a different shield for use while mounted and another type for use whilst on foot ???
No. They all universally used kite shields then later heater shields both on foot and on horse.
Old topic, but I didn't see it covered, could the notch on a kukri be for a practical use to catch a blade sliding down at your hand?
Thought you were going to do a video on dual wielding shields for a moment.
Matt, where would you recommend going if I wanted a well-made targe?
Targemaker, if he still exists.
on the kite shield if an arrow struck it, wouldn't the arrow pierce the forearm? Is the padding enough to stop it?
Hopefully not. Ideally, an arrow gets stuck in the shield but doesn't go all the way through. Even if and arrow does penetrate, it still won't necessarily go through your arm since there's still a lot of area on the shield where your arm isn't and even if it goes through the one (relatively) small part where your arm is behind you'll hopefully have some form of armor on your arm, either the sleeve of a mail shirt, a gamebeson, or even just some sort of bracer.
Hope you gave them a heads up that they are about to get a thousand orders...
Medieval shields were made of planks, with a fabric or leather covering.
So ok. Not two shields. lol. I have tried a kite with straps like that. They work well for a heater but for a kite having your arm vertical, with you fist pointing to the sky is better. faster, more maneuverable, and less tiring. This is for a footman of course. Can you buy these in the USA? I've been looking for a good solid Heater shield for sparring. Most heater shields you find for sale around here are wall hanger fantasy decorations, not fit for sparring.
"And if you want something that's not on the website, they're willing to... service that." *winks at the camera* "Cheers folks."
The boss on the norman shield serves probably to lock the shield with your buddies in the shield wall.
Can they make shields with a rotary multi barrel pommel shooter? Or does that fall under 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' category?
I could be wrong but I would think a strapped shield would have a rigid grip so you could control the shield easier. again not an expert nor have I looked at any historical examples but it seems like the controls would be a bit sloppy
do shields plus do ancient Greek style hoplon shields? only because I think they would be way more effective then the little bosk (or however it's spelt) shield.
I don't think so unfortunately.
how much is the average thickness of a kite shield? I'm making one right now & still deciding to build it at 9 mm thick or 12 mm thick
9mm would be better.
thank you sir. then its settled. at that thickness I should focus on reinforcing the front cover & rim instead of adding another layer of plywood, is that correct?
8mm isn't an especially thick one?! Matt just letting me have it.
Man, I was studying when I received the notification and I thought the video was about fighting with a shield in each hand... Which I've seen being requested as a topic, by the way.
Do they offer suipping to Germany?
And what are the measurements of that „heater“ shield you are showing here?
You've never done a video on the practicality of dual-wielding shields.
He's actually done it!
Do video on duel wielding Sweihanders
Matt, I was wondering if there were any historical instances of rapiers being used with medium shields?
Yes, they were used with round shields called rotella.
scholagladiatoria how were they specialised for use with a rapier?
I know this is likely a bit off topic but where did you get the warhammer behind you second from the top on the wall. I've seen it in a few of your other videos and i've tried searching for it online but to no avail.
Wait, they're covered in canvas. Canvas stretched over wood. They're basically painting canvasses. Just a wee bit more expensive.
I was trolled, entertained and enlightened.
5 stars x)
Can the plywood shield take the same kind of hits an authentic shield could?
More. Plywood is tougher - that's why plywood exists.
NM. Sorry Aron didn't see your post.
Around what time did knights/soldiers use heather shields?
Short answer: c.1200-1400.
I won't lie, the webpage is quite rudimentary, but the e-mail adress on word art made my day xD
The title and thumbnail made me think you were going to be talking about more dual wielding, but with shields
At first I thought it was a video on dual wielding shields, but this video made me wonder:
But what about Dragons?!
Katar with shield features, and You can use 2 of them.
When i saw the title, i thought it was a video about using two shields at once. HAHA
We want a dual wielding shields video!
How much is a shield that is painted?
Their website is down. Are they out of business now?
Historical accuracy aside, I would think plywood is a very good material for a shield.
It is, but it's modern (scutums aside).
What about shield spikes? Are they historical? Or did Frazetta invent them?
clickbait!
But can you dual wield fists?
I like to make shields from scratch! ^.^
dual shield wield!!!
As with many, I thought this was dual-wielding shields. Ah well.
Completely unrelated, but I've just realized why maces are so nasty; they're basically pommels on the end of a stick!

Am I the only one who saw the thumbnail for the video and thought this was going to be the viability of dual wielding shields?
when I saw shields plus shields I thought this was going to be a video about dual wielding shields.
I thought this was going to be a video about duel weilding sheilds
...... but what about dual shields?
Dammit thought this was gonna be the shield dual wield video
Bravo!
Why do you look so reddish? Are you using warm lights? Do you have a red-colored curtain?
You shouldn't duel wield shields unless you are a necromancer.
Clickbait title and thumbnail! Make a dual-wielding shield video already!
why is it called a 'heater' ?
Take a breath MATT, relax. Calm down. You're like a squirrel in a nut shop today.
they dont ship international though
No?
We had friend bring back bucklers from the UK to Oz. Shields plus advised they used to ship international but had orders go missing to often. The bucklers are great tho!
Ahhh! They don't do steel shields :(
Cool
shields plus shields equals two times shields
