I do a lot of BGS stuff. So for me it is going to be a cargo hauler pure and simple. I may not even bother with shield? I will fully upgrade the engines though & fit a heat sink. (I want some quality of life aspects...) Then fit the smallest PP I can get away with? Probably only fit a size 4 fuel scoop as I will never be going far. I probably will not bother with a scanner or SRV bay? My BGS Python will always be there to do that. But who knows? I will see how it go's? Then alter it accordingly to suit my play style? Thanks good vid ;) P.S. I am pleasantly surprised that you got that much jump range from such a large ship. The Conda of course is special, as it was Frontiers first large poster boy... I do not see anything replacing it.
"This is the Type 8, I'm sure everyone's sick of hearing about it"... Nope :-) Clicked on this as soon as I read the title. Very interesting, and impressive jump range a honking cargo ship like this one. I might have missed the full cargo build jump range part but I'm guessing 30ish fully loaded?
This is a great looking ship, & I've been having fun flying out around doing some random trading. My exploration Type-6 has better jump range though; 56.7Ly when unladen & 330Ly between refuels
Your functional explorer is WAY overmass for what it needs. Great thing about undersizing things is it lets you undersize other things on the build. For an exploration build you don't need hardpoints but if you're going to take a hardpoint, 1 size 1 pulse laser is enough to activate any previously encountered guardian arrays(a size 1 mining laser works too). To give you an example, my all the bells and whistles Krait Phantom explorer(even a AFMU) is running a size 3A(possible size 7) Power Plant, Overcharged for sure, but also a size 3D Distributer(Engine Focused to still boost). 4D out of a possible size 6 thruster(cruising speed of 306, boost 428), and that all leaves me enough juice to Shielded 4 my Fuel Scoop just cuz I can. A functional explorer is still min-maxed for weight. You can't be reckless with it, but that's basically always true anyways with an explorer build. I do understand you didn't have stuff pre-engineered ready to go and didn't want to go do the Tour-de-engineers during the video, as of course EVERYONE loves doing THAT
You could get a bit more out of it with a pre-engineered FSD with mass manager added. SCO doesn't matter if you're just trying to get max jump range out of it.
I’d use more D class components, they’re lighter. Engineering for lightness, extended range and get one heatsink to avoid heat damage. No weapons needed if you’re going into The Black. See you out here. I’ve been out in The Black since ... I forgot
Ok. I have a different take on exploring, I've got no need to go fast, my first trip was with a 33ly ship. This is mainly because I do not use any external databases on voyages, sure I miss a lot of moneyed exobioplanets, but if you go with the attitude that now I'll be two-three months gone from the pirates and other malarkeys in the bubble, you will get some billions anyway. I just look some exploration heatmap now and then and go. Afmu just in case (actually used it three times). There are enough FCs roaming the galaxy so the nearest maintenance bay is normally not further than 3000 lys away. Heat sink for some flying errors and double stars, and a point defence for the return to the civilization.
Spoiler: Longest is about 60ly, practical is 53ly. Honestly that's impressive. My explorer ship at the moment is Anaconda, because my headcanon aches when I think about being cramped in a small ship during the long-rage expedition. Considering T8 is even bigger than T7 in terms of cargo space, my childish headcanon would be perfectly fine with it being my new explorer.
Ok so 60+LY for a one jump max build. Changes you could make for "living on the edge" style jumping are, 1D PD engine focused stripped(should still push it around maybe?), 2C fuel tank instead of 3C(SCO needs 5.2t/max jump), and 2D PP OC4 stripped. Shouls knock off another 4.5t roughly and net 60-61LY total. Not bad for a fat medium.
One of the mission types I do somewhat regularly is the "Deliver 196 t of X to ". I'd love to see a build that optimizes cargo capacity with bubble bus capabilities. Being able to do two of these missions at once would double my productivity if you could get a decent jump range and cargo space. I'd suggest a 3h or 4h FSD booster and a size 3 or 4 fuel scoop, and the rest being cargo. I don't mind shieldless as I'm used to hauling without shields. What would the capacity be then?
I'm not heartbroken over these range results. For what I hope do do with the T8 anyway, but good to know it could be an option for long range exploration - thanks Ric!
Very nice, great video on the jump rang mod for this ship. But I have a phantom with AFM and 2 shield boosters not super engineered as I don't have light weight engineering, yet it gets 65 LYs fully fueled. And it's a tough ship, I can screw up and I'm fine. So, I'll wait on a new exploration ship, not going back to the bubble till that happens. lol That 7A fuel scop tho Wow.
well definitely learned My T-6 explorer Is not getting replaced.. But heat sink launcher Lightweight i would use on that T-8 build no weapons. And i would of excluded the guardian stuff..
Nice !! thank you.. Finally!!! I have been searching for a video like this since they announced it. All i want to know is how far can it go and can i make it an explorer.
I get just under 50 on my Phantom... But it is fully armed, armoured & shielded, just in case I meet any explorers out in the black. Been out to the Abyssal Plain in it...

Replace useless beam with a mining laser and fit AFMU and Repair limpet controller. All that jump range is useless if you blow up.
Would like to have seen a practical test of the 1st build of a few jumps just to see what fuel/heat management is like on it, good vid though
