    We have a lot of problems with MCU Spidey, but a few years removed from it are we able to find more to enjoy than we could back when it was first released? We can't help that we grew up with Tobey, and even Andrew to a point, but perhaps Tom will surprise us upon rewatch… or does Iron Man's looming shadow over this franchise make him the ultimate villain?

And while, yes, I understand that it is not out of the ordinary for there to be atypical ages in families (I'm 22 years older than my baby brother, so someday I will be that incredibly old aunt if my he ends up having kids lmao) it is also not out of the ordinary for there to be young aunts (and Marisa isn't even that, she's in her 50's, normal aunt age).
      rant** these movies were another adaptation/iteration of the original comics, and I think we should retire this idea that adaptations of popular characters have to fit the exact original depiction. just like we have fairy tales told in various different ways, superhero stories should be allowed to be interpreted and molded by whoever borrows them. this version wasn't perfect, but they switched some things up and I think this was a fun switch. It's okay if not everyone enjoys it, luckily, there are other adaptations to watch

    I think the over Iron-Man-isation was done on purpose early on in the film to help further the ultimate point made by the ending where he’s stripped all the way back to his homemade suit; Peter is a better, more effective Spider-Man when he’s doing it by himself. Another thing I think that adds to that is that he almost always fails when he’s using the Stark Tech Suit. Tony should have given him access to code and as many parts as he wanted, and let him make his own gear. That's exactly what Tony did. It would have made the arc more cohesive if Tony thought he was using the code inappropriately instead of just giving a teenager a super weapon and complaining that he hasn't learned how to use it.

      That’s why he kept those things locked, because he didn’t think Peter was ready for them yet. But he hacked in and got them anyways, If you watch till the end, when he got the suit back, he took those things out of the base suit, so Peter could just do his own thing.

    • @raymondfisheriii791
      @raymondfisheriii791 2 роки тому +11

      But at the same time, it would’ve been interesting for it to have been a thing of instead of giving him a super suit from the jump, he gives him the resources to build new gear for himself from the ground-up, and Peter basically ends up going mad with power in a way of he keeps making himself stronger through technology, and it would be shown through Peter’s eyes as finally being able to live like his hero. Like maybe he starts seeming more like a dick through the movie, and his change in behavior ends up mirroring Tony’s before he made the suit to begin with, and that’s what leads Tony to take it away because he feels like he’s corrupting the kid and needs to let him be humbled again to set him back on the right path

    Even though MCU spiderman is my favorite spiderman, I've always found the critiques people give it very accurate. Not necessarily towards the movies themselves but towards the MCU as a whole. I will say this, I personally found Peter's home made suit (the one with the vest and goggle eyes) to be more realistic than the other two. Like if you're not familiar with sewing you will not be able to put together a skin tight spandex suit with spider web details, it's just impossible. So peter putting on blue joggers, a red vest and weird goggles that help him focus feels more like what an actual high school kid would do and what materials he would have access to.

    People really blow the whole Tony thing out of proportion. Like I get he’s in the movies a bit “too much” (even though he only has fifteen minutes of screen time in this movie and even less in FFH), but the whole point of these first few movies is that he doesn’t need Tony or any of his fancy gadgets to be an effective Spider-Man. Peter even says it himself in Homecoming that a lot of the stuff Stark put in the suit is unnecessary. That and the fact that both movies end with him fighting the villain with only tech he made for himself. (Yes I count the suit he made at the end of FFH as his own suit, he designed it it should be counted as his.) Even before Tony showed up he was acting as an effective vigilante and was making his own web fluid which is something both Spider-Men before him couldn’t do in their movies. Andrew bought his off of Oscorp Amazon and Tobey could just squirt his out like milk. Tom’s is the only one who made it by himself. He’s way more independent than people give him credit for in the MCU they just keep regurgitating the same Twitter threads they see that make it seem otherwise. Sorry to type an entire manifesto, btw. I just really like this movie and this Spider-Man. I’m a super huge fan of the channel.

    • @MrTREEHUNTER22
      @MrTREEHUNTER22 2 роки тому +16

      Because he's definitely way less independent than his predecessors. There's nothing wrong with that, but it just deviates from what Peter's character usually is like. He's doesn't trust as easily as he does in the MCU. People like the Fantastic 4, Tony Stark, and Nick Fury are people we highlight as "good guys", but Peter always makes sure he's not too close because he has his own life that he doesn't want disturbed, and often times he finds that their ulterior motives won't always align with what he wants. And that implicit trust he has of Tony (ooc but its another universe so who cares?) starts to create issues with other characters. Mainly the fact that MJ and Aunt May are sidelined in all the movies. MJ's just kind of there, and we don't get any deep personal moments with her and Peter. All we ever see is that they have a crush on each other. And we see it play out. Cute I guess, but they drag out this relationship that they really put 0 time into two movies, when the previous movies could establish Peters relationships in one. Aunt May doesn't really do anything in either movies and she could've just as easily not been in the movie. I get the actress is hot, but there has never been a point in either movie where she absolutely exemplifies the character of Aunt May.
      I think the MCU did really well with it's interpretation of Tony Stark, even though he's has far less hubris, and the relationship he has with spiderman is definitely interesting. But to make Spiderman this intertwined with Iron Man, they essentially had to cut out a ton of things that characterized Peter. It's like how the Harry Potter films cut out everything smart or kind that Ron Weasley says, and just assigns it to Hermione.

      This is probably the most realistic Spider-Man there could be, and they used that to make it a really different and interesting Spider-Man.

      It comes back to the point of him being in the Stark suit. Who is he outside of just being a teenager? Quick reflexes, intelligence and strength, a trait that possesses many Heroes. Anyone could wear the gear, and with training could be just as good as him. Organic webs makes our boy different and unique. Which is important because of how it affects his ability to live a normal life.

    • @maevem316

      Eh, I feel like you could easily show he's intelligent without ever having him make the web shooters, through his actions/planning/etc (I'd even argue that's a *better* way to show it). The most important reason to keep the web shooters imo is more just that there's more to do with them that way. They can break/run out of fluid, or be modified in different ways depending on what's needed. Organic web shooters really take away from that (even if they do make the spider theming more apt)

    • @14s0cc3r14

      What makes Peter unique is his intelligence, drive, and morality. If his spiderwebs were just another superpower, it wouldn’t add anything to his character and just be another gift he was granted. Him making his own webshooters shows he is capable beyond just his powers, that he can and always will do greatness.

    Peter making web shooters shows his intelligence, AND it also makes each fight tense in my opinion. He can lose a web shooter, run out of webbing, or break them. Electro for example has always tried to short out his web shooters, and people have tried to crush them before.

    Some of my thoughts;
    After having Spider-man in multiple isolated universes, it is great to se him interact with an interconnected one. While all the Stark Tech is much, it ties into his arc on how he was relying on Tony instead of just doing what he was already doing. And the suit doesn't do everything for him, it doesn't give him super strength, it doesn't give him durability, it doesn't give him reflexes, it doesn't give him spider sense. And I enjoyed Karen as she allowed for Peter to voice his thoughts out loud in a way that hasn't really been done much in live action before. It's ironic how they complained about him not expositing what's happening around him when Karen gave him someone to talk to about the situation and his life (the important stuff that isn't "I better jump off in 100 meters"). But I do wish he had a hand in developing more of the tech and they kept a consistency with it, We never see the gadgets (other than the tazer webs) again, and Karen has vanished because Peter keeps being able to talk to other people in his life about Spider-man stuff.
    I have heard that Sony pushed for Tony to be more present for his star value. But I do also see the value of his presence. Peter is only a few months int his career, and while Uncle Ben isn't mentioned, the impact of his death is present just with the fact that Peter's Spider-man. And while we haven't seen the exact MCU depiction of his origin, we can assume it follows the same cues. So Peter being irresponsible with his powers resulted in Ben's death. one of the first independent choices he makes with his powers gets his guide in life killed. It makes sense that he would look for guidance in others because he needs that standard to help him do the right thing, which is whee the Avengers and Iron Man comes in. They are this golden standard he sets himself to, and he believes he needs them in his life to make sure he doesn't make the same mistake again.
    Michelle Jones is a great character who basically modernizes what MJ originally represented in the comics. I've heard that due to the rights, Marvel can't entirely use the usual depictions of characters (no Harry Osborn, no Mary Jane Watson, young Aunt May, young Betty Brant, etc). And I don't feel the "My friends call me MJ" is forced. It sets the stage for the fans to understand that she's gonna be the next love interest, and it worked with the understanding that if they name dropped her as MJ earlier, the fans would either go in an uproar over her race (even though comics Liz was a white blonde who wasn't related to Adrian Toomes) or not become invested in Peter's crush on Liz. MJ is still her initials, it's just that in this case, they don't stand for Mary Jane (While the "My friends call me Gwen Stacy" joke was funny, it's hard to tell if it was just a joke or a legitimate interpretation of what the scene felt like).
    I personally prefer mechanical web shooters. In the comics, Peter is a super genius, on par with Tony Stark, Hank Mccoy, etc. And it's a shame the movies never fully delve into that outside of a general passion for science. I find organic webbing both gross and confusing. How is he generating so much webbing? How much does he need to eat to make it? How does he retract the webbing like in the Raimi movies?
    The comics did delve into organic webbing, and I believe it was established that he needs to eat a lot of starch to generate the webbing.
    I just find the mechanical webbing to make more sense, be more practical, adds some stake (jamming up, running out of web fluid, being destroyed/damaged), allows for more of a variety of webs (nets, impact webbing, tazer webs, web balls, etc).

      It makes sense in the context of the MCU, but at the same time, other iterations of spider-man have always been very independent. I feel like people have a problem with the fact that MCU spidey movies rely so much on his connection with iron man. It totally fits with the universe, because of how he was introduced, but at the same time it makes it feel like he has things too easy. One of the biggest examples I can think of is the fact that his punishment for messing up in homecoming is simply losing all the cool stark tech upgrades, which puts him on the same level as other versions of spider-man. His punishment is basically "learn to be spider-man by being spider-man", and after he learns that, he just gets all the overpowered upgrades back and never really has to go through spider-man related hardships again. Although this makes total sense because of how the character was set up, it does make him feel less independent

    I kinda dig Marisa Tomei Aunt May. I think making her middle aged instead of inexplicably ancient given that she should be around the same age as Peter's parents makes her feel like a more down-to-earth character. The traditional Rosemary Harris Aunt May is almost like a wizard, like Gandalf or Dumbledore. She really leans into the idea that with age comes wisdom so she always knows the right thing to say even if she's completely oblivious to what's really going on in Peter's personal life and how applicable it is. Her age also makes her fragile, yet invincible. Old Aunt May can be threatened by the likes of the Goblin or Doc Ock, but you know ultimately she's going to be safe. They would never put her through anything as brutal as what happened to Marisa Tomei because it would be too horrifying to see a little old lady get the absolute shit kicked out of her. Marisa Aunt May not only feels more vulnerable because you know she's in the age range where anything can happen to her, but because she feels more fallible. Marisa May freaks out when Peter comes home late. She doesn't know if he's getting into drugs or joining a gang or if something else terrible is going on and she has no idea what to do about it. Rosemary May is never concerned about any behavior from Peter a normal person might find troubling and never misreads the situation and offers useless advice based on off-base assumptions.

    Loved the video, but I can’t help feel that they are missing the overall tone of the movie. The point the movie was trying to convey is that Peter is handed all of this tech from Tony, but he’s not yet ready and hasn’t earned it because if he needs to rely solely on the suit Tony gave him in order to be Spider-Man, then he’s nothing without the suit, he’s not Spider-Man.
    Although not traditional to Spider-Man, it’s quite a realistic take on it since he is a high school teenager. In all other Spider-Man media, he’s always been portrayed as a teen but somehow has the mindset and mental maturity of a middle aged man. This rendition was much more based in reality in my opinion

    18:50 hard disagree, organic webs are like the stark tech in his suit, they make him too powerful and there's no drawback. Web shooters are great for the story because they aren't guaranteed to work all the time. They can short out, run out of web fluid, a villain can break them. In any situation, Spider-man can lose his most versatile ability and be forced to improvise without it, and that's a great way to believably increase the tension in any fight. One of the biggest perks of the symbiote suit was that it made its own webs and negated that weakness. But with organic webs, he just has that automatically.

      @@jamman9569 The relationship he has with Tony only 'takes away' part of his character if you already have an idea in your head of what he has to be like. That's not a good way of assessing a character that's supposed to be its own unique version. If this isn't your favorite version of the character then that's fine, but it works within the context of the MCU and the type of Spiderman they're trying to make. Honestly, so what if this version isn't 'faithful' to other portrayals? Accuracy is just not a priority for me as long as they do it well.
      And by the way, this IS the most "quintessential every person" that the character has ever been in the films. Every action set piece is from something in his day-to-day life, like how he encountered the vulture in the suburbs because of a high school party. Just because he interacts with a billionaire doesn't mean it detracts from his character. Didn't comics spiderman also interact with the wealthy Osbornes? And yet he was still relatable, right? That's the same thing with Ironman.
      That's also ignoring the fact that "Peter is supposed to be the quintessential every person" is the whole point of the movie. He gets his gear confiscated and has to solve the problem on his own, with his homemade suit, and without calling for help. I swear, some Holland Spiderman critics just cannot do basic theme and character analysis.

    • @jamman9569
      @jamman9569 2 роки тому +2

      @@caoisekamay1175 No it takes away from the character because Peter Parker was made to be relatable and it is a core aspect of the character. If it's a core trait of the character it's absolutely a good away to assess an adaptation. Also the Osborns didn't serve as as father to Peter while providing him with groundbreaking technology and spoiling him. You did not just call Holland the prep boy an every person. Dude is one of the most privileged people in his movies and that's like the opposite of what Spider-Man is supposed to be. He doesn't suffer financial burdens, he skates by life and goes to a prep school that sends him on expensive vacations.

    • @caoisekamay1175
      @caoisekamay1175 2 роки тому +2

      @@jamman9569 idk, maybe YOU don't relate to the character but a lot of people such as myself find him relatable. For example, I like that this is the first film where the villain doesn't have a personal vendetta against him or doesn't try to destroy the city, Vulture just wanted him out of the way so he could do the heist. The other spiderman films have a sort of obligation for him to do good since the entire city is usually in danger. This film shows off his humble and responsible values better imo, since even though no one was in direct harm he still sacrificed time as a normal teenager to do the right thing. Most people will not have to face a choice that could save millions of people, but we will face many choices of giving up a good time to do the right thing. That personal conflict feels relatable no matter the circumstances surrounding it. Maybe for you wealth = automatically unrelatable, but in my opinion you cannot have such surface-level understandings of a character that external factors take away from the actual development they go through.
      I could address point by point how him being a 'prep boy' and going to an 'expensive' school doesn't really violate anything if the values or personality is still there, but it's obvious that you're one of those people that already have an idea of what Spiderman is 'supposed' to be and can't take any changes to the character. Again, these changes only violate stuff about the character if you're basing it off of already existing versions that you like. Listen bro: *this is a new version of the character.* It's not supposed to follow everything from the comics beat for beat. And I'm okay with that. I don't care about accuracy. If it works within the context of the universe and the version of the character they are setting up, then it doesn't matter to me. And right now, all traits and development of this specific version of spiderman have fit together well and make sense within that one context.
