Tsuruko's Tea Journey

  • In the Japanese tea ceremony, the host serves traditional kaiseki cuisine, sake, and finally tea to the guests. The ritual, established as an art form more than four centuries ago, is believed to be the foundation of Japan’s omotenashi hospitality. One woman has decided to embark on a unique nationwide pilgrimage to immerse herself in the art. Tsuruko Hanzawa is a rare “catering chef” of tea ceremonies.
At 70, she loaded her pots, pans, and tools for making tea onto a van and set off in her kimono, serving food using local ingredients and tea to the people she meets along the way. This documentary follows Tsuruko for two years as she battles illness to continue her pilgrimage.

    In stillness, tea steeps-
    Paths woven through whispered leaves,
    Karma sips in peace.
Such a beautiful story, and how the teacher overcame so many obstacles, finding peace and gratitude in serving others.

As someone who lives in Alabama, it's really great to see there are places that still love old cultures and appreciates every day they are alive. America just doesn't have that. We are so concerned about money and greed that we just don't appreciate life.

Tsuruko is such a beautiful soul, reaching out to so many novice's to give them the a unique experience of Chaji, the Japanese tea ceremony. This is an exquisite glimpse into this rarified cultural event which makes one step out of modernity for a moment to listen to & appreciate the season's of our natural environment; a practice centuries old, which is needed more than ever in our fast paced world.

Interesting, to me she is a monster and a hypocrite.
I studied tea with real masters for 35 years in Japan. Not Iemoto and so called masters/ school teachers, who only care about money but the only true tea masters in the world, Zen monks from the most spartan Zen temples, starting with Eiheiji where i spent 7 years.
These are the people who respect thoroughly the true teachings of the true masters who started the tea ceremony.
And there is one thing that all the true tea masters have in common, something that is never respected by any school and any Iemoto, which is that no soul must be harmed in the preparation of tea.
The fact that this monster here can take a fish, kill it and cook it means that she will never understand the true values of the Tea Ceremony starting with the most important of all Kei, Respect. There is no respect whatsoever when animal is killed for a tea ceremony. True Chaji and Chakai made by true masters, never use anything of animal origin, which means no meat, no fish, even the feathers used as utensils come from animals who lost them as feathers naturally fall, or picked on dead animals. The plants used for the meal must be picked up without ever killing the entire plant, just picking up some leaves, or some stems or some fruits or some vegetables or some nuts, but never a root and never anything which may cause the plant to die. Same with flowers, they must always come from plants which are left to grow back once the flower was picked up. Same with clothes, no true tea master ever wear silk and his true guests are expected not to wear it either, because it kills silk worms, unless one wears Tsumugi silk which comes from hatched cocoon after the chrysalis came out as a butterfly, and so the worm is never killed.
A real tea master who is not vegan is a contradiction in terms and all of the true great tea masters from Shuko to Joo to Rikyu were all vegans, and emphasized the importance of never harming a living soul. These are the true teachings of the tea ceremony, and this woman here as so many so called masters only cares about humans, and forget the true meaning of the tea ceremony.

I have watched this twice. I am enthralled and love the real joy Tsuruko has found in tiny things. I try to do this. I'm from the UK and find so few people who stop, look and feel life like Tsuruko does. It's odd that I notice people in Finland are more like Tsuruko - they too like to forage for real food in the forest and have a great and slow respect for the things that grow there. Well done NHK for making this - in the great tradition of non-commercial tax funded public service broadcasting. Tsuruko & NHK - the perfect match!
