- Wishing everyone a peaceful weekend. Mark O’Connor's "Appalachia Waltz" #songsofcomfort
--
This video was originally released on May 15, 2020, as part of Yo-Yo Ma’s #SongsOfComfort project, which was launched at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to provide comfort in a time of anxiety and fear. The project inspired thousands of people around the world to upload their own songs of comfort in the months that followed.
It is simply amazing. I can click a button and Yo Yo Ma is playing as if in my study.
Right?!
How great is that! And the informality of it all makes it seem so much more intimate, as if Mr. Ma has invited us into his home on a Saturday morning to listen to him play! Thank you, Mr. Ma, for taking the time to play and share with us.
Isn't it wonderful!
I’m not crying, you’re crying!
I bought the CD this is on, Solo, the day my dad died. This song makes me think of my wonderful father, who passed over 21 years ago. I cry every time I hear it.
I did cry when I heard Mark O’Connor perform this live...
I bought Solo, the CD this piece is on, November 3, 1999. That was the day my father passed away. I love this piece so much, but it is rather bittersweet to hear; I miss him so. But I also rejoice for the happy memories that are stirred. Such is the power of music. Thank you, Yo-Yo, you made my day.
I’m sorry for the loss of your father. I know from the deaths of my belovèd grandparents that time takes the pain down to a manageable level, but you never stop missing them.
They are still with us in memories, celebration of love, and present in Consciousness.
Thank you! Peace and blessings from the Blue Ridge Mountains. 🌄
Music gives hope. With hope, we have a future. Thank you again
I was lucky enough to see this performed live in Portland, Oregon. It was the encore after the Bach Cello Suites. I can’t describe how achingly beautiful that moment was for me. Many of you watching this know how I felt.
Josephine
Wish I’d been there too.
Watching him perform the Bach Cello Suites in Chicago in 2019 is one of my life's peak experiences. It was transforming. Such a kind soul to give us a glimpse into it and he so readily shares his gift of beauty.

I know it must have been. 🎵🎶💕
I was there too, at the Schnitz, 20 years ago. It was the most moving music I've ever heard. Even this recording gets to me 20 years later.
@@SethKBaldwin That’s very cool, Seth. I still have the ticket stub around here somewhere.
I truly appreciate you Mr Ma ..... Thank you 💖
I love this song for so many reasons. I am from Appalachia (East Tennessee) and used to play the cello. I had the pleasure of hearing Mark O'Conner play it with our local symphony and he even gave everyone a copy of the CD single. I plan on having this and Simple Gifts played at my funeral. Hopefully a LONG time from now. Thank you for sharing your gifts.
He is an instrument like no other. Thank you for the little breeze of calm. ❤️
Sweet peaceful music, exquisitely played. Thank you.
Hello pretty 💖
Your music fills my heart with hope and pleasure every time I listen . You are the best. Thank you
One of my favorites. Thanks Mr. Ma
To hear Appalachian, old European tones coming from the cello is magic only YoYo Ma can give us. Thank you Maestro
Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with the world...
Each day I try to listen to one of your musical video gifts. It means so much to me and brings a sense of calm which is sorely needed now as we round the corner into our 3rd year of the pandemic. Thank you……..more than I could ever fully express.
moving, lovely, relaxing in these tense times,
What an honour to live in the same era as such a great, genius, and fraternal cellist!
Thank you 😀
It’s amazing how music can speak straight to our souls❤️Absolutely beautiful
Thank you 🙏🏻
Transports me to another time and place ❤️❤️❤️
This piece of music is out of this world.
Its even hard to give it a befitting description.
Thank you for sharing your talent.
Hello pretty 💖
I used to listen to your recording of this from the Solo album on repeat with a cd player and headphones when I was a kid.
Thank you...it was a comfort after a tough day!!
Yo Yo Ma is so incredible.
@Yoyoma music thank you 🙏🏻 for your devotion to music!
Thank you, Yo Yo Ma, for letting me enjoy you and your talent , and an amazing piece of music, in my home, on an impulse. How generous and wonderful!
Thank you yo yo ma for the beautiful music. We really need this in our troubled times .
I have this piece on your The Essential Yo-Yo Ma and I play this over and over again on loop as I take my walks through the Ramble in Central Park. I have most likely listen to it close to a thousand times and it still continues to move me. Thank you!
What a gift from God your talent is. It makes me cry because your music gives me hope in these trouble times. ❤️❤️❤️

even though you have been doing this for years playing some the same songs over and over you still have the same raw emotion from the first time i've seen your performances its just so breath taking.
It's like he made strings out of my soul, and is now playing them like he always does!!! Love you Yo Yo Ma!!!
I'm not sure why UA-cam recommended this to me but the algorithm was right.
This is beautiful!

This song and the way you play it, translates to me how life will be reborn once this "winter" (Pandemic) pasts.
Thank you for sharing this
Awesome! Thank you for sharing!
So beautiful. Thank you.
Thank you, Mr Yo-Yo Ma. Beautiful!!
Hello pretty 💖
Legendary musician
The most beautiful piece of contemporary music I think I have ever heard
Thank you dear man.
Thank you so much for sharing your incalculable talent with us. I am a social worker, trying to find peace and inspiration - and you never ever let me down. Thank you!!!!
Are we just not going to talk about whatever wizardry he's doing with his thumb there? It's a whole new dimension of things I can't do.
Thank you so much for these songs of comfort. I don't know if you realize how amazing you are for doing this.
Thank you!
Thank you.
I adore this song! Thank you!
Lovely 🎼🎶🎻
Yo-Yo Ma mais do que merece o Nobel da Paz. Um dia o Comitê Norueguês do Nobel se aperceberá desta verdade axiomática.
One of my favorite songs from this album 💗
Thank you
Thank you so much for these songs of comfort. One of them showed up on my feed, I don't know why, but I'm so grateful it did. Your music speaks peace to my soul, which I so desperately need right now. Again, thank you.
I remember when you spoke at my Graduation at NEC back in 1992. I was inspired and am always inspired. We loved your playing at the online Revels concert and this is so lovely. Thank you so much.
You make it look so effortless, yet so amazingly played! Thank you
I saw you perform this in Sydney, Australia and it was my first time seeing you live. The moment you started this piece I understood how special your playing is. I'm incredibly grateful for the experience. Thank you.
Qué lindo es escucharte!! Gracias, maestro Ma!
🙏🏾🙏🏾
Obrigado Yo Yo Ma.
You really captured a wonderful feeling with this piece. I play fiddle so the harmonies are familiar. Thank you for this series. I’m sure it’s helping our sanity.
Yo Yo very nice. American moanful music. We can hear the sadness mixed with hope in there. Thank you sir for playing this piece.
💕✍🏻thanks again 🤭🌹
If you haven’t gone into a studio and recorded this, please do.
Just saw that you did and downloaded it. Thx 😊
I know a bit of Mark O'conners work. His writing, Yo-Yo playing: manna from heaven, Thank you both.❤
Sylvester Stallone calling for his mother: "Yo, yo, ma!"
Did you know? In fiddling, double stops are imitating the bagpipes. The open string is the drone, and the melody represents the chanter (the fingered pipe).
The difference between a violin and a fiddle: a violin sings; a fiddle dances! Gratzie, Mark & Yo Yo.
요요마 감사합니다!
Mu ears goes to heaven
Close your eyes while listening to this. How many people are playing?
❤️
I actually own a CD I bought at a salvation army that was YOyo ma plays Appalachia!
🎈🕊⚘
Who is the one would who dare dislike this video? >:|
How could ANYONE not like it? I do not understand.
It’s just a reminder that evil exists in the world.
I feel sorry for the unhappy souls who just do it to annoy ... toddler tantrum. I hope they feel better soon. We're all having a very hard time, and this reminds me that civilised behaviour and the appreciation of great art and artists will help to bring us through to happier days.
@@Sarandib22 A good point. Musicians have taken inspiration from each other for centuries. "Inauthentic" doesn't have to mean "wrong". I consider myself lucky to be able to enjoy many different styles. Yo-Yo Ma's sincerity coupled with his wonderful ability shine through.
great
👌👍
Thank you for this-ever consider TikTok????
If I was younger I would find Yo-Yo and marry him.
🇧🇷👏👏👏👏👏
李老师。祝你身体健康
马先生新年快乐虎年大吉
Thank you.
Thank you for these few minutes of peace...
Thank you.
