Dutch Train Door Closing Whistles, Beeps & Chimes

  • After more than half a year of recording I am proud to present this video containing the door closing whistles, beeps & chimes of all Dutch trains
    This video is (obviously) based on this video by OltonHall:

    A few things should be noted:
    - All signals are the actual departure signals, most lighttrains have time-out closing doors with either a different or identical beeper.
    - The GTW, FTD Protos, FLIRT3 and SNG have a sliding step, SLT and MS08 have a folding step. All can be heard retracting after the doors close.
    - The ICMm clip represents the lengt of the wistle on nearly all trainsets. There are a few sets around that have either a very short or tremendously long flute.
    - The timing of the flute and beeper on DDZ varies greatly from train to train, see this example:

    - With the Arriva FLIRT3 you're not hearing a driver or conductor, that is the actual sound coming from the doors.

    I feel like if there have to be a sound, it should be standarized.
    In sweden we had a voice saying "watch our for the doors, the doors are closing" that worked just fine...

    Why do the sprinters often have beeps, electric sliding plug doors and level boarding ramps while the intercities have whistles and low-pressure swinging plug doors?

      because sprinters are meant to be quick and easely acceseble. People who take a sprinter only have to go 1 or 2 stations further most of the time. Intercity's are meant for longer travel time so it isn't as high as a priority. Sprinters are also newer.

    Quite a lot of those doors remind me of the class 158/159 sprinter trains in the UK as they have sliding swing plug doors. Good video compilation. There's something satisfying about train doors Closing.

      The Netherlands has always been the swing plug door country. Even DDAR/DDZ have swing doors in the end cariages. But from now on we have made the transition to electric sliding-plug doors, as all modern trains have these.

      Whilst the DDZ / NID used the Elizabeth Line (Tfl Rail) and Overground (Class 345 and Class 710) Closing doors. It also uses National Rail (Class 701 and Class 720) Closing doors.

      Oh ja, dat klopt ook. In de tweetonige zit van deur tot deur wat variatie. Het kan zijn dat men er wat variatie in aangebracht heeft zo dat je beter kan onderscheiden echt de deur bij jou dicht gaat.

    Who Here Agrees that the NS F3 and the Conexxion F3 Sound like the TFL 345 and the R-NET F3 and Keolis F3 sounds like the 315

      I agree. The NS, Keolis and Connexxion F3's are exactly the same (might sound different on the recording), as a matter of fact they have the very same beeper as the 345. The R-net F3 has the same one, but faster.
      For clarification, I have heard every one of them apart from the 315 in person

      Those are not quite the same. VIRMm has a harsher, higer pitched beeper while the one on Class 318 is on found on more british trains which sounds al little more smooth

      No, not at all. If you want a European rail vehicle with the same door chime as the R110A then watch Brussels streetcar/tram type T2000, built in 1994 by Bombardier

    Where are the whistles and their compressors(if they are air whistles) located?

      The pneumatic whistles use the main resevoir pressure from the train. On VIRM(4)/(m) and DM90 the whistle is in the cabinet above the door. On ICRm its in on the outside of the carriage, above a window near the middle. The whistle on ICMm and DDZ is electric and the speaker is on the outside of the carriage just like ICRm. The one on the Arriva FLIRT3 is electric as well and plays from the speakers on the door. With LINT I don't have clue where the soound comes from, or even wether its electric or pneumatic

      Side note: DDAR and SGMm have a whistle too, located behind a grate next to the outside of the door. The one on DDAR got disabled because it was too loud (DM90???). The one on SGMM is still functional but normally not used. It can only be activated using the controls fron the driving cab

      All the other FLIRT3's hav the same (I even beleive some other British trains have the same as well), its quite a standard beeper. The beeper of the 4th generation GTW can be heard on tons of UK trains

    fun but painful fact, the ms80 from NMBS (belgium Rail) beep/chime when closing doors can reach up to 100 decibels

      Oh, that's wat he ment. "Whirring" was a bit ambiguous to me. I assumed he ment the blowing-like sound of the AC. The retracting steps are also present on only a few of the doors.

    I always wondered why some Dutch trains have automatic whistles instead of alarms. That's very original and unique ! I might do a similar video with Belgian trains. Spoiler: the doors closing sound of our new M7 double deckers sound like the NS Flirt 3, a friend of mine filmed it on a test train

      Exactly, also the AM Classic and the AM75 have no warning (and the AM75 have very fast doors so that's quite dangerous, they added a buzzer on the modernised AM75)

      @@ag6371 DDAR is from 1991 so the doors have been around a while. They are quite rudimentairy as well compared to slide-plug doors nowdays. Modern sliding-plug (used on GTW, LINT, PROTOS and FLIRT) follow a "track", with a curve at the end to guide te doors inward, The DDAR doors can litteraly ony slide towards eachother, once they are together a separate mechanism pulls them straight inwards.

      Where did you get that from? Currently only VIRM1 (first generation) are being refurbished, with VIRM2 and 3 to follow in the near future. VIRM4 will not be refurbished as they are still considered too new.
      If you don't beleive me just look op interior pictures of VIRMm and VIRM4. VIRMm still has the former lift shaft (for food trolleys) between the stairs. VIRM4 doesn't have the lift since food trolleys were already abolished when they were designed. This allows for wider stairs.
      Be aware that I used "VIRM" as a collective name for 1st, 2nd and 3rd generations

      @@jelte6930 Which 5? Only 4 were ever built, VIRMm is not a seperate generation. Grey is the newer look which they used on VIRM4, when modernising VIRM1 ro VIRMm they painted them to correspond with the new look.
      As i said; look up pictures of the interior

    I have a Question, Why The Heck did the Only Large Diesel Locomotive DM90 Got Withdrawn...

      It's not actually a locomotive, but a trainset/diesel-multiple-unit. They were retired because the NS no longer exploits diesel lines.
      The last lines they used to run on were electrified (and besides passed on to an other company). All other diesel lines are run by other carriers with newer, low floor trainsets, therefore they have no interest in these trains

      @@STN10 What about The Stadler GTW Diesel-Electric Trainsets? 2 Years ago they replaced the Aging Mat '64 Trains for those Stupid SLT Trains, WHAT IS WRONG WITH NS!?!? I bet Romania is Going to Scrap those DM'90s for sure, They Could have Sold them to Poland, We Still have some Unelectrified Lines, Such as Poznań Wschód - Gołańcz, We Could make them Run on Poznań Metropolitan Railway, But NS Barely is too stupid to trade with us...
