Ardross was my Favourite Ever Horse..shortly followed by Rainbow Quest & Dancing Brave.. Danci g Brave the Very Best I ever witnessed.. To have El Gran Senor, Chief singer, Rainbow quest, Lear fan in the one Guineas is almost unbelievable.. Would have loved to see El gran Senor v Dancing Brave over a mile or 10 f... What a race..

Cheers for posting, enjoyed watching this (and at the time) as a Starkey/Harwood fan. Undefeated in 3 runs as a 2-yo (inc Champagne Stakes at Doncaster), Lear Fan was beaten by 2 exceptional horses in El Gran Senor & Chief Singer in the Guineas. Went on to win Prix Le Jacques Marois at Deauville, before finishing 2nd in Prix Du Moulin and unplaced in Breeders Cup. Would love to see some footage of stablemate Rousillon, who became an even better miler as a 4-y-o in 1985

Love this video a sign of good times past in a vintage year. Likewise it was always wonderful to watch Henry Cecil's wonder horse Frankel in action. Put him in with that crop of 1984 and we might have seen some really fascinating sport through the distances. Only suggesting here that Frankel might have met a lot smarter opposition to race against than he actually did.

You're right he won the Prix Jacques Le Marois at Deaville in August and ridden by Pat eddery (Starkey was banned at the time)and this race stamped approval to hold title Championship miler in a fantastic year of racing talent. I cannot recall a vintage year quite like that year.

A tip top miler who just happened to be a three year old in a vintage year.

That's right,He did win those races as a 2-Y-O and was 3rd behind El Gran Senor and Chief Singer in the Guineas, but I'm sure he won a big race in France where he beat Palace Music as a 3-Y-O. A good animal from a vintage time on the flat.

I watched Lear Fan in the Breeders Cup Mile. He really didn't cope well with the tight track and must have lost 5 lengths coming round the home turn. That performance doesn't take anything away from a terrific horse.

Commentator on the early stages I think is John Penney, on the second half of the race it's Graham Goode.

That's right. Also, despite the fact he was beaten by two very good horses in the Guineas, the Harwood stable was suffering from a virus at the time. It was hinted afterwards that Lear Fan was not 100% fit and would have finished much closer otherwise. I think the heavy ground was against him for his defeat in the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp. Did he not go on to be trained in America as a 4-y-o?

This was a wonderful time for British racing. And fair play to Graham Goode he seemed to know what superb animals these two were before they went on to the greater glory of their later careers. No one would have thought El Gran Senor could outclass them in the 2000 Guineas. But, he did. How that horse got beat in the Derby is almost a big a disgrace as Dancing Braves defeat.

my favourite horse rainbow quest , always crusing , but seemed to find one to good , but a big claxen at longchamp got him home the very nest year , then a few years later quest for fame did the business

He certainly went to the US to stand, but I'm not sure if he ever ran over there.

Thanks Marcus for jogging my memory of Jeremy Tree. A real Englishman and a damned decent trainer. He trained many high classed horses at Beckhampton for top notch owners in those days from great sprinters to crack solid stayers. Those were the days when racing was for racing; now the bookies call every tune and so the industry is spinning on its heels trying to find out where it all went wrong. If it works why try to fix it?

These two wonderful horses went on to do very well at stud siring many stakes winners. Can anyone post Lear fan's impressive two year old races in the Fitzroy House Stakes at Newmarket and the Champagne Stakes at Doncaster?
