      I think the contrivance of the Blood Pact really hurts the story of part 3 and makes Micaiah joining the war seem like a fault on her part. Really the writers should have come up with a better reason for Daein to get involved besides sudden magical blackmail.

    I think what the whole Micaiah rant boils down to is basically
    "Is this a bad decision to make?" Yes
    "Is it in character for Micaiah to make this decision?" Also Yes
    there's a difference between a character making a poor decision because it's who they are and making a bad decision because the writer needs them to be stupid for a scene or three

    • @VexdinLord
      @VexdinLord Рік тому +14

      I think it would be in character of Micaiah knew about the blood pact right from the beginning. I think it's out of character for her to trust Pelleas so much that she's willing to get involved in a massive war that will only bring more problems to Daein without at least some kind of explanation on why. She's clearly willing to go against orders to do what's right, so she's not loyal to pelleas to a fault like Zelgius is loyal to begnion. That's the main differnce.

    • @midnight_gmr8562
      @midnight_gmr8562 Рік тому +5

      @@VexdinLord I'm not so sure about that. Even at the best of times Micaiah's divination is pretty vague, and the game establishes that her powers aren't working properly at this point (later revealed to be through exhaustion), so I doubt that she'd know about the blood pact, especially since she didn't know what they were before Pelleas explained it to her. So at best I'd say she'd be able to determine that Pelleas is being manipulated against his will, and figure out that it's the Begnion Senate doing so. All that'd change really is that if Micaiah told that revelation to Sothe (which she probably would) he'd confront Pelleas about the Blood Pact earlier and slightly expedite the process.
      And her loyalty is more so towards Daein as a country and her people, and their point about how if Micaiah deserts the entire country would fall apart, unlike Zelgius whom Begnion would just replace with a puppet general loyal to the Senate.

    • @VexdinLord
      @VexdinLord Рік тому +6

      @@midnight_gmr8562 I didn't mean for her powers to tell her about the Blood pact, I'm saying Micaiah should have made Pelleas tell her about the blood pact. I know that Micaiah leaving would basically cause Pelleas's reign to end there, so I don't think she would leave. But I don't accept Micaiah would just accept an answer of, "just trust me, going to war on the side of the people who oppressed us against a nation we have very little beef with while we're barely holding ourselves together is a good idea." We see later on the once Micaiah knows, she's much more willing to go along with the plan until they find some solution, which can be in character since now Micaiah knows Daein will suffer if they refuse. Before that, she's basically condemning Daein to suffer without knowing why, which I feel is out of character for her.

      @marinary1326 Рік тому +1

      @@VexdinLord The best explanation I can get from what the game gives is that Miccy's powers still tell her that Pelleas is a good dude and sincere, so even though she doesn't know about the blood pact she figures there must be some good reason for Pelleas to tell her to do these things. I think Micaiah also figures that... if she displayed any kind of protest or resistance against the war, it would be interpreted by everyone as delegitimizing Pelleas's rule and it would turn into a coup by the army/people of Daein regardless of her wishes.

    Honestly I've always felt Micaiah was the bright spot in the otherwise weakly written part 3. Her character actually has an interesting conflict, with her being forced to compromise her morals to protect Daein in a war she doesn't believe in and knows she doesn't have a chance of winning.
    I love Ike, but basically all of his character development happens in Path of Radiance. Here he's just Badass Hero Leader Guy, which is unfortunate but understandable as an awkward result of the story being split between two games. The Begnion civil war happens mostly offscreen and the ultimate reveal of how Lekain is controlling Pelleas feels underdeveloped and contrived. Micaiah is really the one thing I can point to and say was done right.

      Begnion does have quite a few mages they could probably kill him with, notably the senators, but the amount of times Valtome follows him into the woods or the like all alone, he could easily ambush him and blame it on a Laguz. I honestly think the hate for Micaiah stems from just one minor thing: she isn't allowed to respond to Pelleas, at all. "Go fight the subhumans" is used as a shock stinger, and in the very next scene, Sothe is like "You didn't even ASK him why he's doing this?!" The pacing makes it seem as if she never considered for a moment any alternative options, just plugged her ears and followed orders like the dumbest Camus.

      This is exactly it and I don't see anyone else saying it. It's hard to rewatch this episode because I feel like the chat, who is experiencing this game for the first time, is being reprimanded for having the exact reaction the narrative seems to want to elicit at the time. Jello and Yam obviously have a very deep understanding and appreciation for Micaiah, which is great and makes for amazing acting to view but they have experienced this story many times each. Again this is the first time most of us in chat were seeing it. What the game shows is Micaiah seemingly just accepting a request to fight a war while the King stands next to his mother, who is ridiculing her, saying "yes mommy". Sothe then acts as the audience stand in saying "What are you DOING Micaiah?", to which she responds "It's what the king wants. No, I didn't ask why. He seems sad." and follows it with the quote "The soldiers are excited about hunting down laguz." HUNTING DOWN. We as an audience supposed to accept this decision without question? You cant deny within this moment as presented it seems out of character for the first time casual observer. And in the case of Zelgius, I believe he is used to make Micaiah seem even worse. Before this scene, He is also commanded to slaughter as many laguz as he can, but he goes against those orders by ending the battle quickly with minimal casualties and trys to force a peace treaty before the senate can react. Then we see Micaiah's "No questions asked" scene. All this is to say, Yam says nothing wrong about the story or Micaiah as a whole and while she receives alot of undeserved hate in the general FE community, I strongly believe that at this point in the story we as an audience are supposed to be questioning Micaiah.

    • @OriginalGameteer

      @@Freshmin think the difference is, Zelgius knows the Senators barring Sephiran are full of shit, while Miciah fully believes Pelleas means well
      Zel follows his orders but is still willing to go "screw this" because the Senate isn't the final say or all that strong, he can get away with his decisions because of Sanaki and Sephiram along with most of the Begnion army having loyalty to their general above all else
      The game definitely tries to paint Miciah in a bad light at first imo until all the Blood Pact stuff gets brought up

      Claude's barely matters because he's mostly an outsider of the big conflict. The fact that blank faced Byleth is the one able to maintain the leader sane is indeed weird because Byleth is basically emotionally a baby.
      The thing could be applied to Dimitri, Edelgard and Rhea though, Claude in all routes stays outsider.

    When I saw Micaiah take Begnion’s side, I did think it was kind of dumb, but being reminded that 1.) she has psychic powers, and 2.) Daein just liberated itself from Begnion so it’s weird that they’re taking their side anyway, did actually make me understand.
    I think the reason I thought it was dumb was because the reasons she gave didn’t make much sense to me. The “I kind of have to” didn’t make sense to me because from my perspective, she doesn’t. (She could resign as general, or tell Pelleas she’ll resign if he goes through with it, or try to convince Pelleas not to, etc.) And the “I trust Pelleas” was even more infuriating to me because you obviously shouldn’t. Pelleas is both dumb and racist, things that in this situation are very much reasons not to trust him.
    But again, being reminded of her visions and Daein’s political position did make me understand. The reasons are probably vague and don’t make too much sense because Micaiah doesn’t really know *why* she needs to do this. Only that if she doesn’t, something bad will happen to Daein. I think the “I trust that Pelleas knows what’s best for Daein” is still a weird way to communicate this, but I think she assumes based on her visions that he also feels like he has no choice (probably being threatened by Begnion or something, especially considering he was talking to LeCain in that one scene). So yeah, I get it now. Your rant wasn’t in vain, Yam. (I’m also not done listening to it, so if this doesn’t make as much sense by the end, that’s why.)

      @@MrJojux Even if you go down the Ephraim route where Lyon’s more classically brainwashed, that didn’t happen out of nowhere either. Lyon’s an insecure trainwreck on par with Pelleas, but he got dealt a rough hand in the form of finding out about an impending disaster via the Time Shear spell, the sudden death of his beloved (if stoic) father, a crippling amount of self-loathing stemming from not being able to uphold toxic masculine standards like being physically strong and emotionally unshakable, and being unable to confide his woes to anyone, not even the twins, out of fear of being seen as even weaker than he was or even to avoid a panic. He was literally advised not to tell anyone about the impending disaster to avoid panicking people, even though he really should have.
      Dads die all the time in Fire Emblem and it doesn’t mean we all resort to tapping into dark forces and trying to bring them back from the dead. But it’s sure as hell understandable that he snapped under all that pressure, made a fatal mistake in a moment of human weakness, and paid for it with the destruction of his country, the razing of a continent, and the loss of his bodily autonomy and ultimately his soul.
      Man I just really like Lyon, he resonates with me. Lyon’s fatal flaws were his insecurity and self-loathing, in a way that has narrative weight rather than as window dressing for a character so they seem humble.

      That aside, why the hell did they have to lock so much lore behind Knoll’s supports when it should’ve been front and center, like come _on_ he’s a squishy shaman with a luck stat of 0 and I already have Ewan by that point, my squisherbee keeps getting crit by everything; Duessel’s line “we are both dead men who have stayed too long away from our graves” also goes so damn hard.

    I think I've got a relatively simple solution to the Micaiah problem. Remove the blood pact nonsense and have Daein be under threat of destruction from both armies conflict after the Crimean and Laguz alliance has to pass through Daein. Begnion is threatening to declare war against them if Daein does not aid them, and due to the general public they can't support the Laguz/Crimean Alliance. This way Micaiah's character doesn't do a 180 in her putting her faith in an absolutely terrible decision purely because Pelleas is not 'Evil'. And I'd say it's plenty believable given the Crimean/Laguz army wiped them out 1 on 1.

    • @mop2420

      This shit right here, I’d rather they not resort to the Blood Pact at all. Begnion has the largest army on the continent, and as nice as underdog stories can be, Daein still has the civilians who were under the boot of Begnion’s occupation for 3 years to think about. And for a self-sacrificing character like Micaiah who always puts others before herself, who led a resistance movement specifically to help the civilians who were being abused by Begnion forces, that can be just as compelling as “Daein has a magical gun to its head, and if it doesn’t do what Begnion says then they’ll pull the trigger.”

She lead a 5 person rebellion against begnion with the dawn brigade and defied the orders of Izuka and Pelleas during the war to save innocent lives. The game has shown that she's not above defying authority to do what's right. Yet in part 3, she seemingly goes with the idea of laguz hunts and fighting a war against a country that isn't their enemy for a country that was oppressing them not a few months ago, all because Pelleas said so. This goes against her established character, and the fact that she never entertains the idea of working with the Laguz alliance in secret after finding out about the blood pact seems very out of character. Either she really expects her war torn country barely making it through recovery to actually win against the combined forces of 2 laguz nations, Crimea and the Apostle's forces while basically being under begnions thumb for the rest of her life, or she's just fighting in hopes that a solution will just plop into her lap at some point.

    22:00 -ish : i feel like the zelgius comparison really doesnt work here because as arim stated, we havent seen much of zelgius / hes kind of an npc. The audience doesn't have a lot of expectations from him as we don't know him enough to have any (as opposed to micaiah). We know hes a general, we know/assume he has good-ish morals as he didnt want to lead his men into the lava caves for a pointless death - and not much else. Not once in the duology have we seen him enforce his morals in any way - again we can assume hes good-ish but weve seen what, 5 cutscenes collectively with him?
    Micaiah on the other hand we've seen plenty of (if a bit too little so far for her being the "mc" of radiant dawn) and we know her moral standings. We know shes kind, we know she's compassionate, we know shes loyal, we know shes good - so her just bowing her head as her king commands her to slaughter innocents ticks A LOT of people off and i feel like making the gender argument in any way here feels a little bit lazy.
    That being said i agree with yam that yes, this does make sense for her character. While the game has shown shes kind and everything ive listed, its also shown and continues showing that shes very trusting and loyal to a fault. Shes trusting because shes got heebeejeebee clairvoyance powers or wtv that havent led her astray before - so she trusts in pelleas' decisions, even if she may not agree with them completely.

      @@66Roses Yeah I would say this is where my personal critique lies as well. It's not so much I disagree with the outcome of the story, but rather that Micaiah doesn't question it when it matters. Peleas is a good person but, as Micaiah is well aware by this point, is a very poor judge of character and as such takes very bad advice from very evil people. The issue here isn't trusting Peleas is a good person, but rather failing to act as an advisor in a moment when they are making an astronomically bad decision. Setting aside the morality of the war, there are very good reasons for the country to stay out of it, all of which could have been easily argued and Micaiah even mentions and acknowledges some of them outside of the throne room. Again, I don't think the outcome was bad, but I do feel it could have worked better if Micaiah had initially questioned the decision and Peleas had to explain his reasoning. Instead we got a largely pointless dramatic reveal that Peleas had been in talks with the Senate and the war was some form of reparations between them (which again, dumb decision).

While people don't know she's Branded, Laguz explicitly helped Daien in its liberation from Begnion, and yet common soldiers in some cutscenes are explicitly excited about murdering Laguz. The people of Daien have had the opportunity to be better but don't. I know the common man may not have the experiences to come into contact with the Laguz that helped, but the king did.. the general of their army did. They have the social reach to help make social change but don't. That's my problem. Do random citizens of Daien deserve to have what would happen to them due to spoiler reasons? Like… you could totally spin a few chapters out of Micaiah leaving the Daein army and searching for a way to help Pelleas and deal with the fallout of that, get that Ludveck-copy’s coup-a-loopie. I felt like Micaiah wouldn’t resign herself to that role so easily, especially if she REALLY didn’t want to do it. For all of her self-sacrifice, she’s pretty dang spirited.
