Water Island, the smallest of the four main islands in the USVI, is easy to explore on foot or by golf cart. Yes by golf cart! Come on, jump in and take a tour from Phillips Landing, where the ferry from St. Thomas arrives, to the old hotel, then Fort Segarra, beaches and other sites.
My husband and I had our honeymoon there at the old Sea Cliff resort in May of 1989. It was a beautiful place. I think it was a month later when the hurricane hit. Such a shame. I have a picture with my husband and me on that concrete lookout. We're both holding our half full rum punches.
The uniqueness of the island is its untouched natural beauty and a way of life that is close to nature. Personally I hope this never changes.

Wow so weird seeing this. My family had a home on Water Island from 1959 till 2009. The old hotel now is a ruins site. Many cocktails there. They don't mention that Phillips landing is named after Walter Phillips who worked out the lease arrangement with the Federal government. Residents pais a lease fee to the feds until the lease was up and then we bought the land the house was on for pretty cheap. Walter started the hotel and had rental cottages up the old fort road. There's the family house just down the road from the old fort. So strange.
Not strange, its called a under the table deal. Clearly the guy had connections.
