  • Fascinating tour of the British colonial Hanging Gallows on the island of Cyprus. I go down into the trap door hole where the condemned were hanged from the gallows and also examine the awful cells where the condemned were held prior to being killed by hanging. A truly awful place where the cells were designed to echo and resonate every sound so that the prisoners were tortured by the sound of their own voice and movements. This is the awful truth about the executions by hanging at the British colonial prison in Nicosia Cyprus of alleged EOKA terrorists in the 1950's. There seems to be some doubts concerning the official stories about the hangings but this video is mostly about the prison and the gallows where allegedly 9 young Greek Cypriot men were hanged and buried on allegations of terrorism and allegedly buried in the grounds of the prison. The British authorities refused to give the bodies to the families and the bodies allegedly still remain in the prison grounds even after Cyprus gained alleged independence from Britain in 1969. No forensic evidence has ever been sought to confirm that they are actually buried there. There have been rumors that the alleged terrorists were not actually hanged but were part of a British stage managed plot to cause divisions between the Greeks Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, the British public, soldiers etc. The truth will only surface if the alleged grave plots are dug up and examined for remains but that does not seem to be on anyone's agenda. Until such a time ever arrives the facts will never be confirmed. The prison is an awful place with horrendous living conditions and cells which echo every sound which would have made the prisoners lives a living hell.

So many clowns trying to justify the executions just because “19 years old is an adult not a child.” What distinguishes childhood from adulthood varies from region to region (plus at the time 21 was an adult in Cyprus). When we speak of the 18 year olds who fought and died at the Somme, they are brave boys who served their empire but when a boy of the same age fights for the release of his island from foreign rule he is a man of a terrorist organization and deserved to leave his life unfulfilled. Double standard.

As a youth in 1970 I got in trouble with the law and ended up in Bedford prison . Our prison photo was taken in the disused hanging room . We had to stand on the spot they dropped people through .... the wardens joked with us and even had a pic taken from a playboy magazine to stare at on the opposite wall . They told us that " this is where james hanratty was hung " .... I will let you discover him on you tube . But it has always been a strange sensation to be a convict and not a tourist on the same grisly spot .

My dad was sent to this prison in 1955 and sentenced to death
    I’m
On the day of the hanging they found he was only 15 years old
He was then put in prison for 3 years to be hanged on his 18 birthday
On his 18 he received a pardon from the queen of England and then released

You have your facts wrong there. If he was 15....and I am not saying that it didn't happen, he would have been commuted immediately. For an offence to be a capital case you had to be OVER 18 AT THE TIME YOU COMMITTED THE CRIME.
So....maybe you were told that story but it is not exactly true because he would have been reprieved as soon as they found out he was 15. It would have been illegal to wait until he was 18 and then hang him.

I'm somewhat sceptical that the rope was the original one used to hang all three prisoners. The whole idea of weighing and measuring the prisoner was to determine the length of rope needed so 3 people would need 3 different lengths unless they had very similar weight, height and build. The rope was attached to a weight matching the prisoner's, the night before the execution, to stretch the rope to ensure as quick a death as possible.

Never forget, that the Greek Cypriots in the main welcomed British Administration. The Turkish Cypriots did not. That is why the Island nation is still divided... with the Southern Greek Cypriots still supporting Britain... that's why we still have RAF Akrotiri and Dhekelia Army Barracks on the island... Just look at Cyprus... they drive on the left, their road signs are the same as in the UK, their electrical system and household plugs and sockets are as in the UK... this video is pretty much made as sensationalism by someone who didn't even feel it necessary to employ an independent interpreter.

The British tried to keep order on the Island & many police officers in Cyprus were Turks, who welcomed the British too. Normal Turkish & Greek Cypriot communities welcomed the British. Extremists like EOKA & their supporters, along with nationalistic Turks didn't want peace & order, which is why there were bombings & assassinations . Britain kept Cyprus in order. Without Britain & the UN being there, it would have been like the Syrian war earlier.

I wonder how many British soldiers or Police were murdered by those 30 men who were judicially executed there? How much pain and suffering did they cause them and still cause to their families? They knew what the penalty was before they did that, and they still went ahead and did it. In India they achieved their emancipation through peaceful means suggested by Ghandi, and that option was also open to them but they did not choose that pathway. Archbishop Macharios did not condemn the murders these men carried out. The best one can say is they died for their belief in an independent Cyprus, which in itself is noble; however there were other ways available to them to achieve the objective.

Cypriots tried the peaceful way first (thru UN), to no avail. You may want to look into the dialog between Greek prime minister Papagos and Ant Eden for the Cyprus issue (1953). Declarations of Ant. Eden stated that Cyprus would never be self- determined, which apparently threw oil into the fire.
Nevertheless a lot of nations gained independence in the following years; Britain would have to give it to Cyprus too. Fighters could not foresee such future developments, but British Diplomacy could and act accordingly.

Some cases I consider do not concern killing, e.g. stealing weapons, shot at a policeman killed by another who escaped, injuring a int service agent (I do not know all cases). However they were not afraid to die and showed it during execution. They believed they were not murderers. This might be the hurting truth.

    Good video.
The 'strap' in the display cabinet looks like the one they use that goes around the lower thighs so they can't spread their legs out anticipating the drop.

Very interesting video,a place i would like to visit myself, my thoughts would be one mans terrorists is anothers patriot depending what side you sit on.My view if i was from Cyprus i would be with them executed men, if i were British they may well have been terrorists ,either way it doesnt changed what happened. It reminds me of Jails and places of execution in Ireland where not only were they hung but also shot, one man in a chair as his was too ill to stand up. I think the thing you miss the point here is both sides in this story was the reality of killing, which most of these men British and Cypriot were well used to given 6 years of war then the bloodshed in cyprus at the latter end of it where very use to the the hardships, the cells for instance are the same the world over as regards to self harming that is the same today, any cell today will have nothing in it that would allow an individual to escape justice as you put it. the same goes for the execution chamber, it was the same in the Uk , Ireland Australia ,the USA or anywhere that carried out the death penalty, the condemned man got on the trapdoors, yes the noose was specifically measured for that particular individual for a very good reason, that was to stop them from strangulating or having their head pulled off, it was designed to instantaniously break their neck once the lever was pulled., it is sad to see that happen because these were what we would now probably term political crimes from the british point of view and the very fact that its still there shows how important it is to the Cyprus people and rightly so, but your video seems to be making the point more about being anti death penalty than about injustices, either way i enjoyed watching it and its important from a historical point of view that we remember these places

I have made it plain that I do not believe either side were innocent because both sides stage managed events in cahoots with each other. The only people who really suffered on all sides or were killed were those who have no idea of the disease on this Earth called Freemasonry. The key word here is Freemasonry.

@@yonniboy1 funny how the Greeks and Turks lived for hundreds of years together under ottoman rule and then coincidentally under the British they hate each other and want to kill each which they did all so Britain and America could have a base on the island once they raped and pillaged the country. Same thing in Sri Lanka Kenya India and the list goes on. This is not a conspiracy theory this is a fact.

I don't try to excuse any of this but consideration should be given to the time, place and circumstances of the penalties. After all, the British legal system executed a n18 year old (Derek Bentley) for NOT killing a policeman.(look it up!). Bad times, bad justice but it's still happening in some places!

*The long drop hanging method is a quick death because the pain carrier nerves are totally destroyed in an instant and the condemned person brain stem with it's all important nerve ending's are ripped apart. Very much like pulling a telephone out of the socket, the D.I.Y home suicide method of neck suspension from a short rope is far different, the person is strangled and choked, he will become unconcious within 12 seconds, but will not be clinically dead for around 12 minutes. If you are planning on hanging yourself do find a 6.6" drop, or don't bother. Its too dangerous*

What I am about to say next........ (Anyone wanting to place bets what I am saying is not true I will give you odds of 10 to 1 in your favour)
I got falsely accused of SPYING once - (Seriously I did!) and in the country that it was in (No names mentioned) it was a HANGING OFFENCE!
(Trust me you do not want to bet because I have a Newspaper clip of my court appearance), I was arrested by armed police and held overnight in a cell. Next morning I was taken to court and I heard the police allegations. I thought you have got to be kidding me! I was not even formally charged and the first I heard of it was in court. I knew it was a hanging offence but I never thought I would EVER be facing such an allegation. I could write a book about how many scenarios flashed through my head in that instant. The judge listened to the police, asked them a few questions, asked my solicitor if she objected to me being detained for 8 days while the police searched half the country (Their words not mine) and then threw the case out. At that point hanging scenarios disappeared. So your enlightenment on how quick my execution would have have been are appreciated in the past tense.
For anyone wondering about the rest of this spying arrest story and what else happened before during and after...You wouldn't believe me even if I told you! (Hang on, yes you would because I still have the newspaper clipping).

Gorilla@199: It would be better understood if you named the country. (I'll give them £50 quid to still go through with it for you) In England executions were a sombre farce, the condemned never knew the gallows was in the cell next door, he was shamed by the Priest or Vicar to put on a brave face, reckoning he still had 15 minutes to live and that he had to endure a short nearer my God to thee sermon he did, whilst his wrists were being strapped a cupboard was slid along the wall by the jail-warders stood to his left to reveal a wood door which opened directly onto the galllows floor, he followed the hangman through this door and immediately the hood and rope was slipped around his neck and the lever pulled, from the hangman exntering the cell to the rope-dropping took 8- 9 seconds. He was quickly marched under the rope, he was left to hang for 15 minutes (tea break time) then cut-down. The USA clown who acted at Nuremburg never had a clue how it should be done.

      @gorilla199  6 років тому

I'm not getting into one with you, I learned that lesson, I just felt amused to remember the farce when I was taken to court as a "spy" and thought I would share it. Hope you enjoyed the video.

Your lucky I was interviewed 3 times by the Police as part of the Leeds Ripper enquiry, (Peter Sutcliffe, Bradford, 7? dead) I failed to take it seriously, treat it as a joke, and had the Police laughing at my couldn't care less attitude, it did have repercussions though my looney father in law thought I had done it otherwise the cops would not have been 3 times. this is explained because they had no computers and had 7 separate murder enquiries on the go, I had the same car, the same N.E. accent, today I worship the guy who almost blinded him about 7 years ago. Respects.

The EOKA terrorists made the IRA look like amateurs. I remember it well as I was a National Serviceman at the time. General Grivas not only fought the British but when the British handed over the island to the Cypriot Government he fought against them for Union with Greece. He then fought against the Junta in Greece. In the main he was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of people from both Cyprus Greece and the UK. 105 British soldiers ,most of them in their late teens or early 20s, were killed by EOKA so it was right that retribution was obtained. The presenter of this programme is naive to say the least.

Add 148 Greek Cypriots suspected of collaborating with the British and a unknown number killed in communal violence. Its a fair bet that the hanged fellows was overqualified for a neck lengthening in a time when murdering someone usually resulted in a date with the hangman.
