Faux Stone Sign from Foam (How to build)

- This is the second of two videos on making signs from foam. In this video we will create a logo that looks like it has been carved from stone. By following the step by step process, you will find it easy and fun to work with foam. This is a fun and inexpensive way to make a realistic weathered sign. I'm using 2' x 2' by 1" thick styrofoam, purchased from Lowe's. This styrofoam only cost around $5. I'm also using clear tack or shelf and drawer liner that I purchased from the Dollar Store. Take the shelf liner and cover the entire surface of the foam board- you are now ready to draw on your design. I used a simple design that I put together in Photoshop, but you can use just about anything, including vintage logos that you can pull up on the Internet. I printed the black and white logo in three sizes to make sure it would fit in the projector. Using an inexpensive
Tracer Projector, I enlarged the logo to be traced onto the foam. After tracing the logo with a Sharpie pen, you are ready to retrace your design with an X-acto knife. Keep your cuts to about 1/4" deep and avoid over cutting into your design. Peel away all the shelf liner that will be the recessed areas. Using a spray bottle with lacquer thinner in it, begin to spray the foam panel. The lacquer thinner will eat away the exposed area to give the sign a carved look. Once the thinner has completely dried you can apply latex paint to seal the sign. You must use a water based paint like latex. After the latex has dried you now can use other paints like spray paint to create your final design.

When do you take the shelf liner off the raised up parts that didn't get sprayed with the lacquer.? I'm guessing that you don't leave it on and paint over it.? Because the first time a corner pealed up it would get pulled off and reveal blue styrofoam.
jenky1044, You are absolutely right. After you have sprayed on the lacquer and it has dried. Peal off the shelf paper and then apply latex paint to seal. Thanks so much for watching.
Great tutorial. I'm wondering if you could use vinyl cut from a Cricut, then transfer it on the foam, and spray the thinner on, skipping the cutting step, seeing all that would remain from the transfer is the vinyl. Do you think that would work?
I do that now as well. But I find your going to get better results if you trace around even the vinyl letters. You don’t have to go deep, just enough to score the foam. I would experiment with it and see how well it works with no scoring and with scoring. I hope that helps. Thanks for watching.
I wonder whether you could use a soldering iron and just do some light touches around and on the lettering to give it a more aged finish too before painting?

I want to go a little bigger on my sign, will other types of foam work as well?
I personally like the dense foam boards like polystyrene, and you can get it in 4’x8’ sheets up to 2” thick from home depot and Lowes. I hope that helps.
