  • Here is a video featuring a mylar roll - purchased off of Ebay - showing all the route emblems ("bullets") on an older iteration of front/end route rollsigns found for a very short period of time on MTA NYC Subway IRT SMEE cars (R12, R14, R15, R17, R21, R22, R26, R28, R29, R33, R36).
Starting in 1967 following the opening of the Chrystie St Connection, NYCT had decided to color-code its subway routes for map and rollsign purposes. The first iteration between 1967 and 1979 had all IRT (A Division) routes aside from the 2 train route colored differently. Additionally, shuttles were denoted with two S's (SS), while the single S emblem denoted a special train. It appears that the font used for this rollsign is "Standard" (also known as Akzidenz-Grotesk).

Standard Medium is the font used here. If based on the original 1967 color scheme (vs. the 1970 NYCTA Graphics Standards Manual), the colors would have been:
    - PMS 130 (for 6, N, SS [Franklin Avenue Shuttle pre-1968]; as early as 1972 the first two Vignelli maps were using PMS 116 for this, would later be used on all BMT Broadway lines)
    - PMS 165 (for 1, 7, D, EE, JJ, SS [Culver Shuttle pre-1968], now used on all Sixth Avenue trunk lines)
    - PMS 185 (for 2, HH, QB, RJ; now used on all IRT Seventh Avenue lines)
    - PMS 239 (for 4, AA, F, MJ - Myrtle elevated line)
    - PMS 300 (for A, KK / K, TT, SS [Bowling Green-South Ferry Shuttle pre-1968]; used on all Eighth Avenue trunk lines pre-1987 when it was replaced with PMS 286)
    - PMS 311 (for 3, 8, E, M, NX, SS [42d Street Shuttle pre-1968]; 1970 Graphics Standards Manual cited PMS 312, which would later be used for JFK Express)
    - PMS 355 (for CC, GG, RR, SS [Dyre Avenue Shuttle pre-1968, all shuttles post-1968 thru 1979] [the unused MM line also used this color] [1970 Manual cited PMS 354]; reassigned to all Lexington Avenue lines after 1979)
    - PMS Black (for 5, B, LL, QJ / J, SS [Lenox Shuttle pre-1968], after 1972 alternating with PMS 401 as to be used on black background; originally used on all S Shuttles at point of 1979 color changes)
But those were printing inks. Wonder what color codes were used for printing (by silkscreen method?) on mylar roll signs by Trans-Lite (which made this particular roll sign).
Also, a shame there wasn't a roll sign with those colors printed in 1969 as along the lines of those struck for use on IND / BMT R-16 / R-32 / R-38 cars. Or was it a case of, if they were, they ended up unused?

@@wmbrown6 I’m sure there were Mylar signs for the older B div SMEEs, but I don’t know which firm made signs for them.

Originally the 8 was powder blue 🔵 . One of the R62AS has the powder blue 🔵 3 6 and the JFK Airport rolling signs . Including the powder blue 🔵 6 rolling signs. Eventually they are definitely gonna slip the powder blue 🔵 8 in telling you.
