The BR 04s did have cow catchers and sideplates, but only the ones that worked on the Wisbech & Upwell Tramway or Great Yarmouth Docks. This is because they were working in places where there were people in danger of getting swiped under the wheels, so they need the extra wheel coverage. As displayed on Toby, the J70s (which were replaced by the BR 04s) also had this feature if they worked in those areas.
There have been black 04 shunters, I have a Bachmann model of one and also the 04s did have cow catchers and plating covering the wheels. Although from what I have seen from photos these examples served on the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway which ran between Cambridgeshire and Norfolk.
The Milwaukee road had two classes of Hudsons. The first being conventional locomotives, and the second batch being streamlined engines designed by Otto kuhler. If only devious diesel was present, then I could call his British Railways counterpart; gronk. I think Simon Martin would’ve appreciated that reference.
Awesome Sam! I’m sure you’ve noticed, they’re starting to make the characters more realistic by upgrading them! Giving them rivets, more handrails, and lots of other things!
Really love this series. Looks like Connor is based on a New York Central Dreyfuss hudson despite not being two-tone gray. The NYC Dreyfuss hudson has been made by Rivarossi and Broadway Limited in HO. MTH made it too, but their electronics are so unreliable I always hesitate to mention them.
Thanks very much Andrew - yes I think you're right - probably not very correct to have shown mine, but it makes up the numbers! Appreciate the info mate, Cheers, Sam :)
Its amazing how many new characters have been added in the new Thomas episodes. The only different locomotives in Thomas when I was growing up were the narrow gauge engines based on the trains from the talyllyn railway.
Hi Sam, great video. I was talking to an ex-railway man the other day and apparently the controls of the sentinels faced the longer nose, so therefore that is technically the front, however like you say as shunters they would have ran in both directions. I also found out the controls on a class 20 face away from the engine so they run cab 1st for visibility. (You can see a video of him on UA-cam in the Rosie and Jim episode 'The Steam Train'. His name is Ken.) George
Hey, just realized that this was uploaded on my 27th birthday. :D Also I have some other ideas for real life Thomas characters (if you ever do another video): -ICI Hopper Wagon = Hector -Terrier = Stepney -Class 07 Shunter = Salty -GWR Diagram E39 TRI brake coach = Old Slow Coach -J94 Saddle Tank = Wilbert and Sixteen -LMS Coronation Class = Dutchess -LMS Patriot = Big City Engine -Bellerophon 0-6-0WT = Sonny -Ruston = Dart -Class 08 Shunter = Diesel/Paxton/Sidney/Splatter/Dodge -City of Truro (as himself) -J50 = Original Awdry Thomas Model
Great video Sam I really enjoy when you do Thomas videos although you should definitely try and get your hands on a streamlined Hudson as they are amazing locomotives and very fast
Favourite diesel is the Class 28 Metrovick. There's one in Thomas named 'Boco'. You think you can find one? But engines in general is.... A Japanese engine, the JNR D51...

But running your engines by themselves is something you should do more often! 11:54 some real 04 shunters did have cowcatchers and sideplates to work on routes the J70 did you were spot on at the end!
Den at 8:55 has his exhaust at the front, so your model is facing the correct way. A great comparison if kids are watching this - to let them know that these were actually based on real trains that were out there a long long time ago !!
Hey Sam. I actually heard that Bachmann will be making Daisy for the Thomas and Friends line. As for your little challenge, I will name all the familiar faces in specific lists: Thomas and Real Life. Thomas: Thomas, Gordon, Henry, and Spencer. Real Life: LB&SCR E2, Flying Scotsman, LMS Black Five, A4 Silver Link, and Stephenson’s Rocket.
Fun fact about merlin: he is based on a specific member of the king arthur class with 3 smoke stacks so that it could puff out large clouds of steam to hide it from ww2 aircraft, and the number of this locomotive was 783 and the actual name of this engine wasn’t merlin, but was actually called Sir Gillemere.

Great vid Sam would you be able to do a weathering video on a piece of rolling stock? Ive seen somthing that looked weathered in one of your other videos and it looked amazing
There's a few interesting things I've learned about the character Merlin. Firstly he is voiced by Hugh Bonneville, who has also starred as Mr. Brown in the two recent Paddington films. Secondly there was a real King Arthur class locomotive named Merlin, but this engine was numbered 740. The Thomas character Merlin's number is 783. The real 783 was actually named Sir Gillimere. Sadly the real 740 'Merlin' was deliberately derailed on the Longmoor Military Railway in the 1960s. Why they did this is anyone's guess. I would rather have the engine preserved. Fortunately there is one King Arthur engine in preservation, and that's 777 'Sir Lamiel'.
10:35 - To answer what you said there, I have three favourite engines. The NZR JA class 4-8-2, the DC class (which is diesel) and the EF class (which is electric). All three of these engines are in the same country as me - and that's New Zealand.
11:57 - In real life there was at least one Class 04 fitted with sideplates. This engine replaced the old J70 and Y6 tram engines on the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway.
Mavis, I think, is based on the Drewry 0-6-0 shunter. In the UK Drewry didn't build their own engine but subcontracted them to companies such as English Electric, Robert Stephenson, Vulcan and Hawthorn as well as British Railways workshops. The latter became the 03/04s. Because they were an industrial locomotive, there was nothing to stop Drewry from selling them for private use in quarries, dockyards etc. The covering of the sides using plates would be required if the engines travelled on public roads although I am not sure about cowcatchers. It is quite possible that some may have been sold to industry with protective side plates like Mavis has.
Model train wise they look nice, on the other hand where the series as gone since season 4...hmm.. Nice Video as usual, and God i've forgot how expensive model trains can be, my Car hobby makes up for it I suppose lol.
If you think Den's face is rear-ended, then you haven't seen anything yet. In fact Den doesn't even hold a candle to the likes of the Double Fairley locomotive Mighty Mac. Or the Culdee Mountain Railway engines based off of the Snowdon Railway engines. Heck BoCo in the railway series books was even shown to have a face on either end.
Great video Sam these are good videos I find it weird that daisy is based on a 101 because it makes sense if she was based on a 121 as that is a single unit
I remember when you said that Rosie appeared to have a disease, but the dots are actually freckles and the pink is makeup. I don't know why in the world they made the character like that, but I don't really mind it.
There was actually a King Arthur class locomotive in real life with three smoke stacks. The purpose for the three smokestacks was to be camouflaged from the dispersed smoke and steam to hide from world war two fighter jets. Also, Mavis and Toby were based off the 04's and the steam trams of the Wisbech and Upwell tramway. The 04's were painted black. Both engines in real life had side plates and cowcatchers. This made Toby and Mavis almost identical to the 04's and the steam trams of the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway.
As for those you didn't show I'm kind of surprised that you didn't show the Class 08 Diesel Shunter as that's the one class to have the most Characters based on it.
The engines at the back are Henry/LMS 5MT Black 5, Gordon/ LNER A1 Pacific, Thomas/ LBSC E2 tank engine, Spencer/LNER A4 Pacific Stephen/ Stephenson's rocket or The Rocket.

I remember when you said that Rosie appeared to have a disease, but the dots are actually freckles and the pink is makeup. I don't know why in the world they made the character like that, but I don't really mind it.
haha yeah you're right - I was just kidding! ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Wow really?! I'd love to see that, thanks for sharing!

As for those you didn't show I'm kind of surprised that you didn't show the Class 08 Diesel Shunter as that's the one class to have the most Characters based on it.
I have shown that in previous episodes - this is the third instalment! :D
