Wonderful reaction. You always give a very detailed view of the song you are listening to which I appreciate. (The retired teacher is still learning from you.) You also show your reactions through your expressions which is also fun to watch.
Let me emphasize that I love Elizabeth. Of all the people doing reactions on UA-cam, she is the best. Her appreciation and knowledge of music, voice and music production enriches my appreciation and knowledge so much! Plus her voice, her eyes, her mouth, her hands are like a symphony of feminine expression and emotion that takes this old man's breath away. Yes, I have a huge crush on Elizabeth, and I bet I am not alone. She is gorgeous! That said, every time she says "THE Pentatonix" it makes my skin crawl. It's like saying 'the Pink Floyd', or one of her other favorite groups 'the Postmodern Jukebox"! Putting 'the' before 'Pentatonix' is a little like fingernails on a chalk board for me. If Elizabeth wasn't like Mary Poppins, practically perfect in every way, I wouldn't even bring it up.
This is one of my favorite PTX Christmas songs, and if I remember correctly this was Kevin's premiere as a singer with the group. He had been working on his voice but hadn't been comfortable enough until this recording.
I'm really glad I subbed to you, you're one of my favorite music TEACHERS on UA-cam, your excitement for the subject is palpable and you teach with such care for both the subject and your audience, so thank you for these!! And I LOVE this reaction and this song!!
Fun fact, this song was written by a guy named Mark Lowry back in the '80s. He was a comedian at the time, who also did some songs. This was, by far, the best thing he ever did. He eventually went on to join the Gaither Vocal Band because he was a decent singer. The song, on the other hand, was covered by lots of people and became a standard. Having heard this song by Mark when he was still a comedian, seeing Pentatonix cover it so many years later (and one of their break-out hits) made me smile. It is a great song, and they are great performers. edit: I am no longer a Christian, but this song can still move me to tears because of the emotion in the writing. No matter who performs it, I give that to Mark. Everyone has their own moment in the sun, this was his, and he deserves it.
I asked for this. Thank you. I knew you’d like it. I love how into music you are. You have such a great physical reaction to good music. It’s easy to see that you love music.

@@freestylerSE Cant really say that. Voctave has 6 more members than Pentatonix does soo ofc they are going to sound fuller. Pentatonix did this with 5 people.
I think Pentatonix is a master of building their songs in the arrangement so that they take us on a journey with a climax at the end. This especially stands out when you listen to other a capella groups' renditions of the same songs.
Absolutely delightful; both the vocal presentation and the wonderful analysis. I just love your beautifully expressive face, lovely lady. Thank you very much for this great session 🤗🤩🙏👼

New Patron!! And my take on the end: The build before the ending i feel is meant to give a false sense of the song continuing after it abruptly ends. Essentially like a false resolve to draw the listener back into intimacy. it psychologically makes you desire to hear more. Pop artists do this all of time. Similarly to how we naturally want to hear a resolve on the 1maj of the key to pop song, but at the last second they go to a 4maj or 5min. Its very similar.
Please do some Voctave! Their Christmas music is fantastic! O Holy Night, Joy to the World, O Come All Ye Faithful, Mary Did You Know, and O Come/First Noel/I Wonder are all fantastic!
I think their version of _O Come, All Ye Faithful_ is my current favorite Christmas song... Gotta love it when a singer holds a note so long his face starts twitching! haha. ua-cam.com/video/CljN1YIxHiI/v-deo.html
It honestly wouldn't surprise me if they didn't double the voices during those "thick sounding" moments. Avi's bass makes those 5 voices like a full wall of sound when they harmonize. Its remarkable.
Great analysis, as always! I'm so overwhelmed by your uncontrollable love for music and for the mastery of the singers you review. From Ooh's to Aah's I noticed that it really kicked me in the gut with "Legendary" from Welshly Arms, at 2:45 to 3:00. I remember vividly realizing that their backing vocals actually made that song a thousand times better!
Hey Elizabeth 👋! I’m now thinking that when you talk about the whooshes at about 12:00 that it was inward whoosh, outward whoosh, inward whoosh, outward whoosh. At least, that’s what would make the most sense with breathing, and if I was a beatboxer it’s probably what I would do.
Pentatonix is one of my favorite groups and I had the distinct pleasure of meeting and talking to Kevin when the group was in Louisville, Kentucky two years ago.
One thing I find hard is that Kirstin and Mitch have such similar ranges, and they also can produce tones with similar color and timbre, so it can be a bit hard sometimes to determine which one is singing on top and which one is lower.
You make my day. It is a truly precious gem to be able to fully embody the joy felt when one listens to music. Somehow your physical reactions mimic what I feel when I listen.
I really think she needs to go down the Voctave rabbit hole. To me Voctave raises the bar to a completely different level of vocal quality that I have never heard in any other group. Also, for all you PTX fans, Kirstin did another song with Voctave on their latest album. Show Yourself from Frozen 2. Its on UA-cam, but doesn't have a video yet.
@@dougreed7641 I can't say Voctave is better than PTX, because the two do such different styles of music. For one thing, while PTX's music has always starred the bass and rhythm (even when they're not there, because when that happens you're always waiting for them to come back), Voctave's music, at least when it's at its best, stars Kate Lott as a monster freak of nature. But yes, Mark Lowry's collab with Voctave is probably the best rendering of the song I've heard. When I first heard it, I thought the climax ("the praises of the Lamb") was a little hokey and overdone; but now it's my favorite part.
@@dnwiebe Voctave has a lot more stars than just Kate. Every member of the group has outstanding musical ability. If you dig into their music, you will find different songs featuring different members of the group (I personally like Ashley's rendition of How Far Ill Go, and Once Upon A December from their christmas waltzes medley). Their Disney Princesses Medley will give you a good introduction to the women, and the Disney Hero's and Villains Medley from their new album (No video yet, but it is on youtube) will introduce you to the Men (except J. C and Tony who left the group earlier this year). Every one of them is an outstanding soloist, with freakishly good ability to blend into perfect harmonies, and each one of them has unique strengths. I also think that many people don't give Jamey Ray enough credit for doing all of their arrangements, which are unbelievably good. Their style is different from PTX, but the quality of what they do is impeccable. Every single vocal coach who reacts to Voctave is shocked by the quality of what they hear.
You should react to Voctave version off (Mary,Did You Know)Their voices is so angelic!!.also, their lead singer is the real singer and songwritter off this song!! Check it out!!!
I like Voctave's version, but you are wrong. The song was written by Mark Lowry in 1984, the music was written by Buddy Greene in 1991, and it was originally recorded by Michael English in 1991. Now of these people are members of Voctave.
I believe they are referring to the video they did WITH Mark Lowery as the soloist. He isn’t a member of the group but performed with them and it is truly special.
That whoosh is one of Kevin's standard tricks. It sounds like a reverse cymbal crash and often integrates right into a bass drum kick. I really do enjoy how much you still enjoy the music even while analyzing it.

I recommend you their live version of "Silent Night". You won't be disappointed by the singing nor the arrangement. Thank you!
This is my favorite Xmas song they do.
Their arrangement of Silent Night is my absolute FAVORITE. It’s soooo gorgeous!!
@@ankhgirl3 I agree. The whole performance it's almost magical.
I reccomend ALL of thier songs. 😁
You always have the best thumbnails capturing the perfect expression. LOL
This has been one of my favorite Christian songs since the 90's, but this version gave me major goosebumps.
This is the first time I've ever heard this accapella or song, thank you, love this group, your knowledge and joy,
The sounds, voices and quality of singing is really good but for me this song is all about the lyrics themselves. Wow!
I love, love, love your enthusiasm and delight as you're analyzing this song! Thank you for doing this for us. Please keep this up, especially with more Pentatonix songs. Thanks!!! 💝💝💝💝
They do sing some parts backwards in Run To You, an original of theirs. It's worth checking out.
I think the impact of Kevin's sudden, sweet, clear little solo line was amazing. I was really looking forward to seeing you react to that. When you're used to his expert percussion and expect that to be his sole contribution, it really floors you to hear that pure, heartfelt tone come out of him from nowhere. This is the best version of this song.
his voice is so pure and innocent, truly an angel
From "wall of sound" to "sotto voce" is kind of a PTX trademark by now. They do it so effectively. And often.
Your delight in the performance is delightful, and catching. It's as much fun watching the delight on your face and in your expressions as it is listening to the performance!
Elizabeth, I am in love with your reactions!! Great choice of song, by the way! This song was my introduction to Pentatonix years ago, and started my obsession with them and their insane talent.
Pentatonix did a great job with this song.
Props to Mark Lowry for stepping away from parody/comedy for a second to write such an amazing song.
You know you've done good when you have the definitive version of a song.
My son is a senior in high school and is a musical theatre specialist and vocalist. He recently was accepted to the Manhattan School of Music and is awaiting audition results from multiple other schools, and he loves to watch you and apply your notes to his own growth as a musician. So thank you!!

Love your reaction videos:) please check out lonesome road with Tim Storms
I absolutely love your enthusiasm,Kirsty is a beautiful young Lady with a voice out of this world.Pentatonix is an amazing group,I've seen a lot of their music, outstanding.Elizabeth keep up the great reactions.
Love your reactions and breakdowns of the videos. I can't wait for this one!!
This is by far my favorite Pentatonix song... and shows their versatility. Thanks for the reaction... I'm sure that's what my face looked like the first time I heard it. ;-)
My favorite “Mary did you know” too!!
I have watched a number of reaction videos but I find yours outstanding. I have loved music all of my life but you still manage to teach me so much with your detailing of specific aspects and highlights of the performance. Fabulous work pointing out the nuances of the performance by my favorite group.
I love Pentatonix and Mary Did You Know. I also love Voctave and their version of Mary Did You Know with Mark Lowry (the writer of the song). I would love for you to review their version as well! Hope all is well and you have a great Holiday Season.
I was thinking exactly the same .. another approach than with Pentatonix and both absolutely worth to be explored and closely been listened to. ua-cam.com/video/uaRpeMT1tjQ/v-deo.html
@@thorstenmatadoerle8546 Thank you, this is one of my favorite song ever and I never heard about Voctave... I literally cry... Sometimes I found the vocalist to loud comparing to Mark, but after all, I prefer Voctave version... Just wow! The long note of Mark and the soprano girl is just insane! Thank you!

@@XxKidnoffxX Voctave is a rabbithole everybody should fall down at some point. And yes, Kate (that really high, crystal clear soprano) is insane. They all are really, really good and many of them have been, or are still, members of the Voices of Liberty in Epcot Disney World in Florida, which is their main job.
Yes you absolutely should do Voctave’s version of this song. So good
I am definitely a feeler. Songs and groups who sing with love resounds in my soul. I love that.
8:36 - most adorable reaction on UA-cam to date.
I counter with this one (watch for about 40 seconds to get the full reaction):
ua-cam.com/video/hT31aomJhhQ/v-deo.html
Elizabeths videos are full of these moments, though, so it's hard to single one out as "the best". :)
Amazing!!!
Wonderful reaction. You always give a very detailed view of the song you are listening to which I appreciate. (The retired teacher is still learning from you.) You also show your reactions through your expressions which is also fun to watch.
Hah! Well, I'm still learning every day too. ;-)
Interesting Side Note:
Of the songs PENTATONIX sings, Mitch says this is his favorite.
4:45 you have impeccable pausing skills.
I won't make that mistake next time, I promise! Thanks, Jim!
@@TheCharismaticVoice Oh, be still my beating heart! Thank you, Elizabeth!
Pentatonix “amazing grace” !! X
Wonderful, wonderful reaction. Loved all the details. And, you are absolutely right, the best version of this carol ever. I get shivers every time.
This is one of my favorite PTX Christmas songs, and if I remember correctly this was Kevin's premiere as a singer with the group. He had been working on his voice but hadn't been comfortable enough until this recording.
I love to watch your synaptic impulses express themselves in your eyes and facial expressions as you listen. Makes me enjoy the sounds.
You should definitely react to their song “Carol of the Bells”. Mitch and Avi blend so well together and Avis voice is so powerful in that song.
The look of joy and enthusiasm on your face is absolutely amazing. I love your reactions keep it up.
I love Christmas Songs. 🎄The live Version of ' Silent Night' by Pentatonix is really beautiful too. Greetings from Germany
I really wish she'll react to that one, It's mesmerising!
I've seen them in person and their sound is just as full and rich in person.
I asked for this. Thank you. I knew you’d like it.
I love how into music you are. You have such a great physical reaction to good music. It’s easy to see that you love music.
Ooo’s are like a scent trail that catches your nose making you curious to find the source. Love this song.
Please react to the VOCTAVE version of Mary Did You Know sung with Mark Lowrey who wrote the lyrics to the song. It is AMAZING ! ! ! Love all your reactions, so informative , I have learned a lot. Keep up the good work.
I actually like Voctave's version just a bit better.
@@georgefry5334 Not Just a bit... ITS on another lvl or Musical finess
@@freestylerSE Cant really say that. Voctave has 6 more members than Pentatonix does soo ofc they are going to sound fuller. Pentatonix did this with 5 people.
It’s beautiful!
Voctave is the definitive version. Noone else can hope to reach those heights, not PTX, not even Home Free
One of the most beautiful people i have ever seen, both on the inside and outside
My favourite part of this video is your reaction to Kevin's solo. Like yeah, I can relate.
You should do the voctave version with mark lowrey, who actually wrote this. hands down one of the best
Also a wonderful version.
It's such an incredibly impressive performance from a technical standpoint, and I'm sure a professional like Elizabeth will appreciate their expertise.
I second this. I actually think that I prefer that one. Then again, Voctave has a LOT of really good christmas songs.
When I hear that song it gives me chills. Great song.

New Patron!! And my take on the end:
The build before the ending i feel is meant to give a false sense of the song continuing after it abruptly ends.
Elizabeth I loved seeing this analysis of this performance! It's been one of my favorite pentatonix covers since I first saw it!
your face when you hear Avi sing is so accurate, the right reaction to his glorious voice
Fantastic reaction!! I've never seen you so enthusiastic
Don't forget Carol of the bells of Notre Dame!
11:58 OH THAT'S SO COOL!
Thanks for another great breakdown. I love this song! :)
Yes! Kevin has a quite somewhere saying he never wastes a breath! Always using it somewhere
I love your expressions. You really feel the music. Pentatonix is really great at drawing in the listener. They're amazing all over of course.
I am a massive fan of Avi Kaplan and his bass! Would love to see you do a reaction to his new solo stuff!
Absolutely, especially "Change On The Rise". Just beautiful...
Full Moon would be a great one for her😀
You make my day. It is a truly precious gem to be able to fully embody the joy felt when one listens to music. Somehow your physical reactions mimic what I feel when I listen.
You should check out Voctave with Mark Lowery singing Mary Did You Know
I really think she needs to go down the Voctave rabbit hole.
I concur n Cimorelli's
I thoroughly endorse the Voctave version. I like Pentatonix a lot, but Voctave's version is on another level
This lady is such a joy to watch enjoying music
Notice the "Halo" effect from the mouth of the cave around Kirstin when she was singing "Mary did you know..."?
What do good a capella groups and The Blob have in common
They draw you in with the ooo's
All reactors get that look Kevin gets to shine in his solo.
You are incredible. Just to watch how the music moves you is amazing.
Why does she remind me of my 5th grade teacher when she let us watch a movie but made us write notes at the same time
You're so much fun to watch.
Thank you Paul!
Omg the thumbnail for this one 😆
I know, right?!
This is an acapella masterpiece imo.
Definitely the best song they made
You should react to Voctave version off (Mary,Did You Know)Their voices is so angelic!!.also, their lead singer is the real singer and songwritter off this song!! Check it out!!!
Yeah, I've seen that one. It is real good. But I like PTX's version better.
Yes! I love Pentatonix but Voctave's covers of "Mary Did You Know" and "O Come All Ye Faithful" are the most amazing covers of these songs.
I totally agree with you. This version has more views by orders of magnitude but you never know if YT is screwing with the numbers.
That whoosh is one of Kevin's standard tricks. It sounds like a reverse cymbal crash and often integrates right into a bass drum kick. I really do enjoy how much you still enjoy the music even while analyzing it.
David Phelps O Holy Night is a great one !
"And then they just kept giving me more woosh, and it was sooo nice", what a wonderful thing to say. What an amazingly well performed piece. Thank you!
