Because underground stuff is always about 5 - 10 years more advanced than mainstream culture.
There's music in 2024 that is considered underground right now, but by 2034 that sound and aesthetic which was previously considered underground in 2024 will become the new mainstream.
This is has always been the case. It's always underground music that influences the direction which mainstream music will go in the future.
Yung Lean is another example of how much the underground affects mainstream culture. 'Hurt' by Yung Lean - the sound as well as the aesthetics of the music video are very much mainstream and standard nowadays, but they were very advanced in 2013. Many such examples.
