    @ 2:20 that Bomber is the first flying prototype of the B-52 not long after its first flight. The XB-52. The testbed “9230” was later equipped with its four original J-57’s on the inner pylons and two afterburning J-75’s on the outer pylons. Those eight engines have been controversial from day one. The craft is flying over central Washington State near Moses Lake around 1954. Orville had passed just 6 years earlier. (I was born that year but I remember as a 5-6 year old the white contrails, noise of loud engines and frequent sonic booms from other jets over Wenatchee).

    I went to work in the aircraft industry in 1960. The only one of these old pioneers I met was Bart Kelly. A remarkable man. He worked for John Young in the development of the helicopter. I have only been to one small air show in all those years. I have always been fearful of the witnessing a tragedy like that at Dallas a few weeks ago.

    Now that is the most fascinating "History of Flight" type of film that I have ever seen. Imagine the amount of work and research that went into just compiling various clips of film! No internet, no easily searched archives. The USAF and NACA and Smithsonian archives would have had to be tediously searched by hand.

    So many historical nuggets packed into a somewhat comprehensive feature presentation, bringing us along up to the dawning of the modern jet age. This was made one year before I was born in 1954. I worked for a brief time at Pratt & Whitney Canada where we were primarily R & D, small turboprops.

      Yes,1954 was a good year to be born,I'm 68 too. My Dad was an Air Traffic Control Officer,he took me to work with him sometimes when I was about 10. I got to see the underground control centre at RAF Sopley and I recall being a passenger in a van which went out to check the lights on the runway at Hurn Airport,also got to see the control tower. I was really impressed with the powerful binoculars on a tripod.When I was older I wanted to join the RAF. My Dad got the staff doctor to give me thorough physical. I was diagnosed with red/green colour blindness (I have trouble witth green and brown,can't tell the difference) and would never be able to fly. I became a telephone engineer,when I discovered there were lots of colour coded cables to deal with :)

    Wow! Hawthorne St. does now look similar to the video today. They made the area a historical district. The Wright Brother's bicycle shop location is a recreated museum but their house is symbolized by a corner porch piece. Ford bought the house to put in his museum, but I don't know what has happened to it since.
    Charlie Taylor has a sculpture at Wright State University made by a great friend of mine Jenni Hess, a 90+-year-old amazing sculptor.

      @@tomgunn8004 He sure is, isn't he? He has a lot of sculptured busts around the world, especially at various airplane parts & services facilities, and airports, though I do not remember exactly where. I know Jeni made one for Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio & she went over-seas for one in Paris & I believe the Netherlands.

    The gentleman commenting on the thermal barrier had no idea how much a barrier it would really become . The crew of the space shuttle would laugh at 500 to 600 degrees and re enter with the windows open . You think 600 MPH heats up your aircraft try 17.500 MPH .

    At 48:55; based on carrier flight tests (this may be from some of those tests) the Corsair was not suitable for those operations, thus relegated to the Marine Corps where they proved to be an effective aircraft.
    I wonder how soon after this video was first released the SR-71 was developed (difficulties solved)?

    • @steve-ph9yg
      @steve-ph9yg Рік тому

      They would of have worked out most of the heating problems for the SR71 by the time of this film. The A12 Cygnus the early version of the SR71 Blackbird was developed in the late 50’s.

    Back when all the airline passengers were well-dressed and well-mannered. When my grandfather was age 12, there were no planes, no tanks, no radar, no TV's, no air-conditioning, no computers, no home or portable radios, and very few telephones (only in certain hotels or businesses in town). Amazing what he lived to see in his lifetime.

      Here's the issue: Tens of thousands of films similar to this one have been lost forever -- destroyed -- and many others are at risk. Our company preserves these precious bits of history one film at a time. How do we afford to do that? By selling them as stock footage to documentary filmmakers and broadcasters. If we did not have a counter, we could not afford to post films like these online, and no films would be preserved. It's that simple. So we ask you to bear with the watermark and timecodes.
      In the past we tried many different systems including placing our timer at the bottom corner of our videos. What happened? Unscrupulous UA-cam users downloaded our vids, blew them up so the timer was not visible, and re-posted them as their own content! We had to use content control to have the videos removed and shut down these channels. It's hard enough work preserving these films and posting them, without having to spend precious time dealing with policing thievery -- and not what we devoted ourselves to do.

    Man was not meant to fly is the creator had wanted man to fly he would’ve given him wings like a bird . The same can be said for the Automobile I have not been in either the airplane or automobile in my entire life Including the nine months I was carried by my mother . The same can be said for the telephone an all electric appliances even the light bulb . The use of these things will bring all mankind to either a cold hungry death or one by fire from a huge explosion made made from the black powder poured down the barrel of a gun . Mankind was given the power over the animal an once again was not happy with this an now will one day go to the edge of the earth an fall off into space . It has been told that man has traveled to the moon and many people fallen for this is lie .
