I was lucky enough to be at Aintree that day. Rewatching it today I have a better appreciation of Brian Fletcher's brilliant ride. He pulled Red Rum's nose up off the ground when the great horse made a mistake about 8 fences from home. What a thrill to relive it.
Rummy does it again! Wonderful vintage footage of one of the best Nationals ever, and featuring the finest racehorse of all time! Love the ancient looking cream coloured ambulance at 13.45, in the days when they still had the classic 'nee-naw' siren!
Incredible to see this footage, thank you. Unforgettable, bravest Red Rum. 💜. The jockeys rode longer in the stirrups back then, so maybe that's why many now get the impression he was a small horse. He was in fact 16.1 hh. I believe. 🌱🌿
Three weeks after this Red Rum won the Scottish National again off top weight. 1974 was his best year. It’s pure conjecture but that year he was probably good enough to finish in the first three in the Gold Cup had he been in it.

Yes totally agree, they have ruined the Aintree National Course and actually made it more dangerous as horses are travelling faster because they have no respect for the fences. A good hurdler could jump these fences now. Also i hate the modern tv coverage. they no longer have the iconic head on camera angle at bechers brook which was one of the most dramatic in sport.
+MsVanorak what I liked about these races are the top class quality at the top of the handicap - better than today and the romantic no hopers at the bottom that just wanted to make it round. Today its 40 identical runners 160 to 140 rather than a range of 170 to 110. The fact I can recall Friendly Henry - a maiden finishing 6th out 9 finishers in 1988 and yet can recall the 5th home this year says it all.
+MsVanorak I know there were qualifications for entry (being weighed) certainly from 1979 but as you said not sure about 1974. For example, in 1981, you had to be a winner of a chase valued at £2,500 (equivalent to £15k) today. Thats pretty classy. 1984's field was a very good one indeed drawn from 141 entries and 80 left at the 5-day decs stage. Today a first season chasing maiden can still run if placed at 3 miles plus and rated 120. Meanwhile a 2 miler can finish a distance 4th in a 3 mile race and still run based on a 2 mile rating. We also know the handicapper is quick to raise weighs and slow to lower a horse leading to weigh inflation over the years. I hear some say this is about 12lbs over the last 25 years. Stephen's Society was the first from the UK to win there in over 50 years. Trained by WA Stephenson, he and Collins were successful with Credit Call in the 70s too. I think Chris Collins is still around in industry today.
+MsVanorak That would be 1970 and Gay Trip's year? That year Derek Scott's ride on Villay - a horse he owned and trained too was real Corinthian spirit. Does Derek Scott still train today? Im sure I saw a D Scott with similar colours to Villay running in 2014-15. It was Josh Gifford's last ride that year too. Of course in 1968, American Tim Durrant rode Highlandie aged 68 to finish. That was the spirit at the time with him and the Iron Duke, John Carden et al just happy to have a go. That said, some of the rule changes are welcome - if only to prevent the likes of David Pitcher riding. I know a little about the late 70s onwards.
Sadly, I no longer feel the excitement I did. Its no longer the special race it was and I dont want to see horses breasting the fences with risky speed. If whats become just another long distance race was scrapped I would not miss it as I would always have my memories and videos of how it was devised to be. The first 6 fences had the job of eliminating 25-50% of the field before 1st Canal. Its lost that job as the powers that be think its better to keep horses running into traffic problems and jumping more fences at speed.

Usually the name is registered by the breeder and the name can be anything, providing it is 18 letters or fewer (including spaces) and isn't in some way offensive. If there was ever a horse to prove the old saying "Horses for Courses" Then it's Red Rum. An average handicapper anywhere else. But at Aintree he was 14lb + better. Also On that day Red Rum won his 3rd national in 1977, people forget that the greatest Hurdle race ever, was run there on that same day. Templegate Hurdle. The famous dead heat between Night Nurse & Monksfield
protarget1 average handicapper, Red Rum was 2nd in the Hennessy a few months prior to this and then won the Scottish Grand National a couple of weeks after this. One of the greatest seasons by any average handicapper 🤔🤔

He says it "ran" 4 times that season without success.
@@Formula1Madx That makes more sense really.
@@johnshort5003 'run' 4 times this season without success....
What happened to all of the 'fallers" in this race?
Were the jockeys okay?
And how about the horses?
no horses died in 1973 but 9 did perish in the 1970s. 2 in the 1960s and 6 in the 1980s
So apparently the Duke of Albuquerque speaks very little Spanish? And doesn't have Fred Winter there to support him (who is obviously fluent).
Night nurse was one of my favourite horses from those days.
protarget1 average handicapper, Red Rum was 2nd in the Hennessy a few months prior to this and then won the Scottish Grand National a couple of weeks after this. One of the greatest seasons by any average handicapper 🤔🤔
The hurdle race you refer to was in 1977 not 1974
@@1964karlos Correct and post re-edited to that effect 😉😊
Hardly average! He won the Scottish National the year after this!
1978 national i said if redrum did not run i would have have my baby that year and i did on national day and the national as not run since on the 1st of april since why
Andy Turnell tackling the National as short as Lester Piggott in a Derby - anyone ride shorter over those fences?
Unbelievable balance
Princess Camilla finished 11th trainer by our Father
o sullevan gets his words muddled up as red rum jumps the last, remember he was deprived on the flat last year, that was crisp, or rather he deprived the winner last year er that was red rum
True, though to his credit, Sir Peter realised and managed to flip the sentence around just in time! Must have been the sheer excitement at the last twisting his tongue!
@@helenemillar7626 And it's Rum Red.....er.....
what happened to clive graham did he die shortly after this race
.....according to an earlier comment he passed away shortly after this race.....
thanks for that chatham, must admit the 74 race was a classic, only those dreadful side angles at bechers spoilt the race, 2nd time around the cameraman doesnt seem to know where to point the camera, they used those angles from 71 to 77, and then brought them back around 2010 thank god the bbc dont film the race anymore
Jimmy Lindley and Richard Pitman took over the Clive Graham role
haha i think Michael Jackson is a time traveler cause it looks like him at 9.46 lol
lol
Holy shit, it does!
@@DarthCipient Thriller of a race, Michael Jackson walking the course 9:46.....
Duke Of Albuquerque looks like Dick Dasturdy
...Dick Dastardly had a better race record...
Is the announcer drunk?! At 1:31 he says L'escargot won a race in 1771!!!!
70 and 71 he says. Poor chap Clive Graham died of cancer later that same year.
haha it does so much sound like that, that's so hilarious haha :)))
@@David.L291 L'escargot looked well for a 203 yr old....
Peter o sulivan was as brilliant as red rum.
Races aren't the same without Mr. O'Sullivan calling them... or Red Rum, Crisp & L'Escargot running.
red rum........mur der
Wrong .Rummy was named after his parents. They took the last 3 letters from each name. MaRed and QuoRum
21lb over weight on a horse that had a squeak, crying shame in these days :(
Was the jockey at McDonalds all night and quaffing ale also?

Horse was killed of course just as usual missy. Aren't you an animal lover, or do you love seeing animals put in danger just to support the money gods.
+George Partridge (Bykerbullet) no horse was killed in the 2015 Grand National. Get your facts right, you plank!
That is correct, I was just putting the idiot right about the big race itself! I've always said they should have let the field go in front of the protesters, that would bloody move them!
+George Partridge (Bykerbullet) Now I understand. You are one of those "animal lovers" who do not care about the horses, you just jump on the bandwagon to whine about people who have more money than you. Class warfare, not animal welfare is what you are about. You see, you could have objected to the fact that horses are sometimes killed while racing without mentioning money, but you couldn't help yourself. Your envy of the "money gods" was just too strong. You nasty, envious little man. You do not care about horses at all.
