It’s great to see a kid today with manners who is respectful and appreciates these great opportunities he’s given. That kid must have some good parents.
Kudos to you Merlin, Wes probably doesn't realize how lucky he is to be tutored by you. He seems to be a very bright youngster and he will be an old school gearhead before long. Always enjoy your vids and look forward to Wes building the 65 with your guidance. Can't for your next video. Thanks
I realize... I am grateful for being next to him but even more grateful for his offer on the truck of my dreams. I will not let you down! Wes.
Wes one lucky kid who has a awesome teacher with endless knowledge. Between you & Jimmy Wes will have a sweet ride. Can't wait on the videos
Keep an eye out for more videos. Merlon and Jim are great people to be around, they each know their stuff and I am honored to spend time with them. Wes.
Thank you for sharing years of knowledge with this young man. You will all be blessed through this adventure.
You can tell what a good kid Wes is just by seeing his demeanor in your videos. I wish him well on his build. Great job Merlin & Jimmy being a mentors to such a good kid.
Cool that you are giving Wess the opertunity to learn and have a cool truck when finished
In 1973, I was stationed in Alamagordo, N.M.. I bought a 1963 Chevy, long bed, custom 20 with a 283, 3 on the floor. It had the original wood plank bed. I wish I still had it today. Mine had 2-60A/C. (2 windows, wide open, at 60 MPH. Air directed by vent windows.
Amen,I love being in the shop with my dad.and my daughter and I are building a 1951 Willy's wagon 4x4. And re building my first car for my son. 67 Plymouth big block 440. Kids definitely need to get more hands on. Came over from fab rats, love the channel.
Good luck on your truck build Wes, from one Schroeder to another...cheers from Canada.
That's 1 awesome deal Wes, congrats, no better truck.
Mine was a 1960 short bed Apache half ton, 350, poss rear end, it could lift the front end off the ground 3 soda cans high then it was off to the race's. Omgosh how I miss that truck.
God Bless and have a great day. 🇺🇸
Old school your passing the wrench, love it , nice kid !
I am glad to see a young man willing to work on cars. Kudos to you Merlin for being willing to teach him.
Merlin you're awesome my Uncle taught me about small Block Chevy's when I was 14 Best thing ever
22.54 Merlin can't find his stuff. LOL. Good on you for teaching this young man. Enjoy watching this channel.
I'd take the chrome grill out of this truck for the build, no not really, I'm 81 and I had brand new 1965 green chevy truck in Nov of 1964, I dumped it in the front with a lowered axle, chrome wheels small window, I always loved the small window, baby moons 3 speed manual, loved it loved it, that 327 is my favorite small block, great job helping him being responcible, the kids now adays are lacking it today. Love your's and Pauls Fabrats videos, can't wait for them to come out, great stuff, Jim las vegas nv
thats awesome of you to help him this is why i watch you and fabrats keep up the awesome videos
That's a really kind thing your doing for Wes.
Wow Wes you have a really great uncle, man I wish I had one like Merlin. I had to learn everything myself by making mistakes and getting hurt. Merlin I think you are a great person and we need more like you around in the world. Stay safe my friend.
That is a wonderful thing that you are doing to help that young man learn and at the end he gets to keep it
Thanks Merlin . Finally a video series of a Dad , Uncle or adult teaching a kid how to do something. Wes learn all you can from your uncle Merlin and maybe get Fab Rats involved to help and teach you also. This is something that you'll never forget. This is why I subscribed to the channel. This is gonna be great.
Super fun, great to see you pouring into the younger generation.
Listen closely to everything he says wes,ask as many questions as you can think there's no stupid question. Wes you might not realize it now but you have hit the motherboard of knowledge, merlin knows things most have forgot or never the education you get with him is priceless.
Look forward to Wes doing the truck. Can I say what a nice thing to do giving him the parts to build a cool truck.
Awesome thanks for paying it forward with the next generation.
Wow Merlin !!!! What a deal and opportunity you have given to Wes. I see there are already videos of the build. Will be watching them in order. What a guy Merlin.
I watched you build Fab Rats motor. I liked that one & subscribed. The very next video you start talking about building my favorite truck. I owned a 64 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree. I drove to work when I worked for TVA. 80 miles one way to work, she smoked it need things. Had a beautiful black diamond pleated seat with a hole in it. Really wished I had kept it, wished I had kept a 57 I had as well. I’ll be watching
I’m so looking forward to this. I’ve watched the first episode where Wes shortens the bed from a long bed. 👍🏻🇬🇧
Wes I started out this way 45 years ago and my mechanical/engineering knowledge has built upon itself over the years. I was offered a 1955 1/2ton GMC pu when I was 13, after a summer of working I gave my folks $800.00 for it and own it to this day. My truck taught me discipline, perseverance, patients, commitment and the value of a dollar. Life happens and things will get in the way, but at the end of the day my 1955 GMC PU is still there. Soak up everything Merlin and the guys are about to teach you, it will propel you in life like nothing else you encounter. Good luck and may God bless you all in your journey.
Love to see the young kids learning to work with there hands.
That will be a fun video series to watch...
Merlin your knowledge is impressive you're attitude when things aren't going to well, I have watched a lot of you and Steve together it makes for a good show love it
VERY COOL of you to give Wes this opportunity Merlin! Glad to be able to hangout in the shop with you guys and watch the progress! Even though its a CHEVY... Wes will have the coolest truck at school!
Totally agree with you Merlin! I grew up riding my bike to a dairy farm since 11 years old. Rough environment to cut your teeth working on things. Changing hay wagon tires by hand (off the rim and back on) with the wrong tools. Straightening nails to use them. Fixing barn cleaner/sweepers when it was below 0° F outside. The list is endless. No kids want to do that nowdays. I'm glad I had that upbringing and experience in my life. You found a good egg.
Great video Merlin!
Very cool that you are willing to Teach him!!
That's cool Merlin! Way to keep him interested in good wholesome pastimes.
That's the deal of a lifetime young mister and you got some great mentors hes going to love that
MERLIN THAT IS THE GREATEST THING YOU WILL EVER DO ... THAT OLD SAYING TEACH A MAN TO FISH AND HE CAN FEED HIM SELF... YOUR AWSOME... LUV YA...
This is awesome of you and Jim to do. I have no doubt Wes will do a great job and appreciate everything.👍
im with you on that more kids need ppl like you
Great project / opportunity for Wes. 💪👍🏼
You couldn't ask for it to start any faster, this is the second channel where we can "Watch Wes Work", lol, "I think we're fine", I like the kids attitude, I hear that wielding over your head like that can get painful, I have two new wielders, and I've never used either of them, 🤤 I'm just waiting for somebody to stop by and show me how someday, lol, I can replace or repair any part of a truck/car, I just never really had a need to wield anything, great video guys, thanks for sharing.
WOW, MERLIN!!!
Wes just fell in a pile and came up smellin' like 10 dozen roses!!!
What a FABULOUS OPPORTUNITY for him to learn under your tutelage!!
Wes seems like a good kid and the fact that he doesn't spend his days with his nose buried in VideoGames certainly speaks to that!!
Can't wait to watch this series of "ground-up-learn-to-build videos" ...
On a different note, don't you (or your buddy Steve) have a front clip for a '42 Chevy so Paul can get to work on that little truck?
Said he's about ready to get the blower motor you built for him put into it and is looking for the finishing parts... (we're checking all over Central Oregon..
Heard tell there's an old boy about 30 miles south of here who has a few from that era, but haven't found out his name yet).
Safe travels friend❣️
Stay FROSTY...
Keep your powder dry and your head on a swivel...
🇺🇸🇺🇸WWG1WGA🇺🇸🇺🇸NCSWIC🇺🇸🇺🇸
Merlin, your a good man to do this for Wes, that kid will learn more in two weeks with you than he will the rest of his life!
Can't wait for the build!!!!
Great getting Wes involved!!!
That's so incredible of you to help Wes get the truck he dreams of the "old School " way, by building it himself.
I've got my Grandpa's only new truck (73 C20) that my Grandson is going to help me get back on the road this summer.
You're right, so few want to learn anything like that anymore.
that lad is very close to what I was at that age. Thank you for taking him under your wing and overseeing his work. I didn't have that, but I wasn't afraid to ask people who could help, and ended up with a driver at age 15.
Looking forward to watching Wes build this truck!
Having known Wes from when he was in Kid Karts, he is a very bright young man, he is one of the few young kart racers that I will practice with (I am 57) on the track and I mean run side by side with. . He makes sound decisions and when you are going fast like we do in racing it is not often you come across someone this young you feel you can trust going side by side with at 50+ mph.
Thank you. This is my 10th year in karting and I have the simply saying - Race people as they want to be raced. Just this year I have won at Daytona on the Rolex 24 track and twice at Roebling (GA). 94.9 MPH, in a kart. Wow. Wes
this kid must be an awesome child! this would be the best time that will last a lifetime.
Awesome opportunity for him 🙏🐺
your channel rocks! paying it forward is awesome. Love your channel
I agree with you any kid willing to work deserves help in any way you can
The kid seams to pay attention and is at the right place to pick up the body parts and the next step.
This kid is going to build his truck from the ground up and he has great coaching. Big future for Wes either as a career or a hobby but looking forward to watching his progress. Think he will listen more than talk and that is the secret to learning.
Very good mentor, what more could a young person ask for
Better than any video game! I've got a decent 66 truck bed trailer Wes can have if you ever get down to Quartzsite...
I have the feeling that Merlin is going to benefit from "helping" Wes build his truck. Not only will he have a great helper but it will energize Merlin just to have someone to teach and bring into the fold.
I will put these episodes to the top of my list of have to watch videos.
jack
I am grateful for being with Merlin, You will enjoy what's to come. I'm excited! Wes.
Thanks for the ride !
This is Great Stuff! Always a Good Deal to hand down some know-how to the kids! 😀👍 This was a Fun episode!
by the way im so glad that paul introduced you to me &youtube, you guys crack me up and ive gotten quite a few good tips from you guys.im old school street &strip racer, well all my family i should say.we had some awesome chevy &mopars runnin street &strip.70s
Noble gesture Merlin.
That great to school the young
I was given the opportunity in 1968
And became a Great 👍 Heavy mechanic
Teach them and they will appreciate the opportunity
Have a Great Day
That was cool! Keep the vids coming
No matter what the future holds, learn all you can. It never hurts to have a fall back position. And the one thing about knowledge, no matter which way the world goes, NO ONE can ever take it away. And Merlin's offer is incredibly generous.
Racing, welding and older vehicles are my passion. Please keep an eye on Old School Garage for more! Wes
Merlin this is so awesome, you saiid it is 0.001% of kids I think it is 0.001% of guys like you to teach kids. All of us try to teach kids but my experience is in Motorcycles and nowhere near your knowledge. My thing was I had to learn Patience and not get mad so my kid would stick around. My dad was amazing but you only stick around for so many hammer throws especially when they come flying towards me. Anyway to all the dads get your kids to work with you let them learn and make mistakes, help them fix it the rewards are amazing. Again Merlin what you do is amazing
its all in the name lol from one wes to another keep on your path bro...
You are a good man. And yes, to have a young man willing to learn and get dirty, well, he s special. Who knows, the next Tony Stewart…….no matter what he does in life, these skills go way beyond wrenching!!!
Wes congratulations on the 65 truck! It’s going to be awesome!
He sher is a special kid and that's awesome that you guys are doing this for him that truck will be well care for with him doing the work I will be watching for the videos to come I watch fab rats just become a subscriber to your channel thanks for sharing
That's awesome what you're doing for Wess just don't let us down now Wess
Mderlin
That is such a generous offer and one I think Wes will be deserving of - this young fella looks like he is ready to learn and be given the instruction he needs to make a real go of it.
looking forward to seeing the process.
You know in Australia any chassis mod needs an engineering certificate here.
I guess that does not need to happen in the USA , but you want to make sure that the chassis is done right as if it snaps in half that could be fatal.
I am sure you will do it right in any case.
Love that low ride truck of yours by the way.
No we don’t have inspections or any of that stuff here you can cut a truck in the middle and shorten it to 2 feet or stretch it out to 20 feet and nobody cares
Looking forward to the vids. And you are 100% right about kids know days
Awesome, you can do it Wes!
Thank you for your support. Please keep tabs on the progress. Wes.
Merlin I would love to see some Cummins stuff I know it’s your thing. Let’s see it!!!
I had a 64 big back window short bed. My dad and I built together when I was 15. Unfortunately when I was 21 it was stolen and never seen again.
Everybody knows something... if you remain teachable... You will learn a lot more. ;)
WELL SAID Every day is a school day even for someone like me I got that from Gene Winfield he was 92 years old when he said that😊🏁
Right on Wes, best of luck stay on track and you will learn so much more. Central California watching
Wes must be one of the luckiest guys on the planet to get an offer to build his own truck.
And I share your opinion when it comes to the youth who only play on the playstation, they can't even change their own bicycle tire anymore.
That's why I'm glad my 13-year-old son doesn't have a playstation or anything like it.
He can replace his bicycle tire himself, in fact we did the distribution of a suzuki vitara together and various other things, I am an old mechanic myself.
greetings from the Netherlands.
I have in my last good years of life (before getting crippled) run/owned shops, and have tried to train young people to work on rigs. I didn't point which kind but just a decent rig to start with(good bones) and show them basic skills. They were all about doing it till a girl friend got her nose in a twitch or they felt sick, the list of excuses came faster than I could imagine. I had one in twenty for the average that learned something. The best one was a man who was a bookkeeper for a large firm, I put him on part time wage/work and showed him just basics (during the nineties) and after six months of part time... he quit the bookkeeping firm, came on full time and was a lead mechanic in two years time. He is now a owner/operator of his own shop with two employees and just hit sixty himself... best part is he is dedicated, honest, has no bills with a nice home paid for including sending his last through college. No bills I remind you. I owned the Triple A Subaru shop in anchorage at the time so he fell into the foreign car repair with a lot more skills than I taught. I hope that this young man is a hard worker that is not afraid to get dirty, remembers his lady but doesn't let her rule him. She most likely will be a memory after a few months anyway as most girls are about how nice a car that you have or other shallow things. Yes they are important, who knows which one is the right one or a real keeper. I had a grand son who thought he was everything but wrong on life. He would come over and work for me, I knew he favored heavy equipment so paid him to run different equipment clearing land I had. I had a lot of equipment and trucks from my own different businesses. Hospitals got a good part of it but before I was to lose my home and shop, equipment (kidney failure) my insurance didn't cover but a small part of stuff, I could still go to court to win but why, I am seventy two (near three) an super bad health (pronounced dead twice in five years) but going back to that grandson, had him move my personal belongings to a cabin my brother owned and for that, gave him a dump truck, a excavator and a shop full of snap on tools (a lot of different tools but the tool chests impress customers) and I just couldn't bring myself to sell pennies on the dollar stuff that had years on it. Oddly enough, if its old, its worthless I guess so just gave him a start for getting his life a good chance. He got married a year after and I have seen most of the tools in hock shops or other including my name still on the doors of the lowboy truck, and the dump truck so as bad as it must of been, was still good enough that its still on the road twelve years later. I kept my equipment in great condition including body an paint. He is in jail an his ex wife has some of the stuff that I had given him.. he turns out to be a meth head... never can tell who will stick
For Wes, just read some of your responses. This is great to see. Best wishes. And 94 mph in a Kart……holy smoke…….
The art form of building a old car or truck , the knowledge of setting points and dwell , driving a 3 on the tree , rebuilding a carburetor . We need more young people boys and girls to learn this or it will die.
Awesome channel Merlin. I'm late to the game, but I haven't laughed this much in a long while. I've watched a number of your vids and have enjoyed every one, and Jimmy's a hoot and a perfect partner in crime.
Great video
Making Memories ❤️🌞
Wes is a future Formula One racer. He's an amazing kid.
Nice to put pictures to all the noise going on outside my window! LOL
Is anyone interested in sponsoring a 6x Champion kart racer? Just this year I won at Dayton (Rolex 24) and twice at Roebling. I'm currently 2nd at the national level and 1st other 2 series. The 4th series kicks off in a few weeks. Wes.
Good job, Merlin giving a young man something to work on and get some excellent experience, we need more guys like you and more young men like Wes and people like his father all right you guys one thing I want to see I wanna see that young man wearing safety glasses. He was polishing off the thermostat housing and didn’t have safety glasses on more safety, this is six in a rowJim from Kennerdell, Pennsylvania
Good morning Merlin and Crew
Wes your a lucky man C10s are like gold especially short beds i just paid over 30k for my short bed C10.
My first vehicle was a 1965 Chevrolet C-10 short bed style side with a straight six and three on the tree. I think they painted it with brush and roller in Forest Service green. I added pinstripes and gauges. If I only knew what it would be worth today. But I picked it over the 1954 5 windows pickup, I wanted something newer. 🙄
Yup, it's a small world. My nephew looks just like yours. They could pass for brothers. He was more the rice-burner type. I wish we could have worked him a rod. Good show.
I would love to be a apprentice in your shop. I would do it in a heartbeat if the commute wasn't so bad. If the price of gas was less i'd be driving to you from Alaska.
Now there is a great uncle
awesome!...get the youngsters involved...thanks 4 video. be kind.
I have some old school tuning, compression, timing, vacuum, stuff my dad left me. I want you to have it. Just saw 👀use one.you will use this stuff. Not a joke.
That was the first thing I lost on my 66 was the carrier bearing and then the radiator hoses.
Your a good man merlin your cousin Paul is good man seems like I watch all you Utah boys if I was a little younger that's where I'd be love what you're doing I'll keep on watching
My first truck back in 1977 changed carrier baring twice in 50k miles great memories. 👊👍😎
For old rotten Chester carburetor sounds pretty good. We used to call them rotten Chester’s. I’ll tell you what you get a thermal quad set up right there. Tough tough on a dragstrip man. Anyway, this is six in a row.Jim Kennerdell, Pennsylvania old Chevy sounds pretty good
I hope this kid realizes what a tremendous gift he has been offered here....not just for the parts , but for the amazing knowledge and talent that comes with Merlin being the mentor. I wish there were more kids like Wes to carry the torch. This is going to be great to watch come to fruition.
Absolutely
Merlon is a great person. His knowledge book is unbelievable to me. If I can grasp just a small percentage of what he knows I will be honored. I will do my best to take this to the next level. Wes.
@@wesmotorsports2003 young wes your wise beyond your years and hold true to your mission and learn all you can much like myself my experience began young at about 7 and been pulling in knowledge of building and mechanics and imagineering much also like Merlin and Paul and anyone who has the zest and zeal to build anything from bits and peices of tis and that from here and there check out what Matt's doing g too as well as paul from Matt's offroad and fabrats
@@wesmotorsports2003 It really is a cool deal. Guys like Merlin and me , and so many others will have great skillsets and lifelong experience in creative car stuff die with us because the younger generation doesn't seem to be into it like my generation was....that's why you will have so many people being supportive of you , because you are a great exception. Keep up the good work Wes....I look forward to seeing this come to life!
@@shaneharrison4775 Thank you. Keep watching. Wes.
