Sarah Vaughan - The Man I Love

- The Lonely Hours, Sarah Vaughan's contribution to the genre of saloon song LPs, doesn't have a stellar selection of material - although of course nearly anything recorded by one of America's foremost jazz interpreters is worth hearing. Add to that the special treat of Benny Carter - the seminal altoist who'd been contributing charts to the hottest big bands since 1928 - occupying the arranger's chair, and The Lonely Hours becomes a very intriguing proposition. Carter's refined arrangements and ensemble playing don't exactly reinforce the isolation of the title, but Vaughan sounds excellent on "I'll Never Be the Same," "These Foolish Things," and "If I Had You," lightly caressing the notes. For "You're Driving Me Crazy" and "What'll I Do," she cleverly mirrors the comic frustration embodied in Carter's flügelhorn/tuba ensemble. Hopefully, Carter wasn't responsible for the occasionally canned sound of the strings; The Lonely Hours is a solid match of vocalist and arranger in most respects, with only the quality of the material weighing it down slightly. I believe she was the best, bar none, simply the best. Nobody topped Sarah, nor does anyone top Sarah today.
Glorious. I'm still waiting Sunday.
It's like a whole orchestra in her voice
Excellent description
Exactly
Nice 😊
I saw Sarah Vaughan at the Century Plaza in Vancouver Canada in the early 1980's. I was 26yrs old and sat at a table with my girlfriend at the time. To this day I have never forgotten her performance....Wow! I have to tell you she had such great respect for the music and sang with incredible precision. She was also very proud. I look back now and realize what a tremendous honor it was to see such talent.
Milo Hill.....HOW VERY HONORED YOU WERE...MY DEAR...TO HAVE BEEN IN THE PRESENCE OF SARAH VAUGHN...WHAT A TREASURED MEMORY AND THRILL....TO HAVE WITNESSED HER IN PERSON AND TO HAVE HEARD HER AMAZING VOICE FIRST HAND...ENVY YOU...THE ABSOLUTE MAGNIFICENT VOICES OF THE PAST...." THE GREATS". ....AND SONGS...ESPECIALLY LOVE SONGS...TODAY...THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY TO COMPARE TO THE ONE'S LIIKE ....THE MAN I LOVE...THERE ARE VERY ...VERY FEW ...SONGS OR ARTISTS...THAT HAVE IT.......NOW.... IN THIS DAY AND TIME...TO EVOKE SUCH REAL EMOTION, PASSION AND TALENT....LOVED READING YOUR STORY !
You were so blessed get hear her LIVE.
I saw here several times at Basin St East in NYC during the late 1950's, and then twice more: once in Provincetown and then finally at the Five Spot ca 1985! She never disappointed. My old friend, also alas deceased, was her producer!
I wish I had seen her. I wasn't familiar with her but now I'm years after. Darn, what a talent I missed.
I saw her two or three times. The first time was in P-Town while I was still in high school. The last was at a club in the Village in the 1990s (possible?) when my old friend Sherman Darby was her manager. I can't remember the name of the club, but I think it is still extant! Oh, yes!! It was the Blue Note!! Of course!
It's Monday, any day to listen to Sarah Vaughan is what heaven is about folks :)
All I need on any Sunday is a coffee and Sarah Vaughan.....
MsVanorak yo a Sara,un whisky, un pucho, y luces bajas...

cidmusicc ... Amen.
And maybe a french cigarette.
The sensational Sarah Vaughan. I’ve been getting lost in her music for decades upon decades. My mother introduced her to me in the late 60’s, now I’m 59 and still loving it.
There’s a special kind of feeling reserved only for when one listens to Sarah Vaughan.
Her voice is beyond beautiful 😢😍
What an Angel of a song ......
This is my MOTHER'S MUSIC. SHE SANG while washing the dishes. I got some good stuff from her too, just like my Father, TOO. MARTINA PATRICIA
I get completely lost in her music..her voice is totally mesmerizing
Bridie, Scotch I take it? Me too partly. When I have time I like to put one of Sarah's albums and lay down on the floor and just listen and get lost in Sarah's recordings. Not a more beautiful voice than Sarah.
Bridie Clark indeed
Bridie Clark She was my recently deceased mother’s favorite singer. Reminds me of her.
I love the standards that allow singers to emote. Sarah is all about emoting. She kills it on this one.
As soon as she opened her mouth I had to rewind to listen to the magical rifts. Its like a soft ocean hissing love notes. Stunning, just stunning!
She is just THE GREATEST, She makes me Feel SOOO GOOD!!! Her Voices Tastes SOO GOOD!!! xoxoxoxoxooo
Someday he'll come along
the man i love
and he'll be big and strong
the man i love
and when he comes my way
i'll do my best to make him stay
He'll look at me and smile
i'll understand
and in a little while
he'll take my hand
and though it seems absurd
i know we both won't say a word
Maybe i shall meet him sunday
maybe monday, maybe not
still i'm sure to meet him one day
maybe tuesday will be my good news day
He'll build a little home
just meant for two
from which i'll never roam
who would, would you?
and so, all else above,
i'm waiting for the man i love
Berta Espinosa amazing..
Classy never Trashy
Berta Espinoza. Thanks for the words even if i could understand most of them (i am a french man). I think that many hysterical feminists of today woudn't agree with the words of this beautiful song so wonderfuly interpreted. But no reasonnable person will care about it.
The orchestral arrangement is stunningly beautiful. As for Sarah Vaughan: what a voice, what a voice. The way she slides from flat to tremolo in the last long note. She IS 'the voice'. Sinatra: eat your heart out.
I love both, Sarah and Frank. M.
Sinatra once said that Sassy was so good that when he heard her sing he wanted to cut his wrists with a dull razor. Anyone can google and verify that.
please try not to compare one beautiful singer, against, the man for all seasons. these two artists, both were given a gift from god, and were able to share it with the world. we were lucky to be around to hear the beauty they bestowed upon us. god bless them, and we thank you so much for those magical moments. Louie Vaccaro, las vegas
@@brothertaro2008 He was also reported to have said that he learned everything about singing from Sarah Vaughan. I can't verify this, but it's a lovely story.
This is also one of the greatest songs of all time. Cheers !
Agreed! You clearly have gr8 taste Sir!!
She is my favorite singer
god she is just beyond, every. time.
Absolute FACTS!!!!!!!!!!
Any day-or every day is good for Sarah. Just set aside the newspaper when she sings!
Mar.27: Happy birthday Ms. Sarah Vaughn, "The Divine One" (1924-1990) Blessings. RIP
Que Grande era👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💖❤️
Sassie and Ella, great artists. Have been listening to them for many years and always enjoy
Music note. Sarah Vaughan was Ella's favorite singer. I love both. M.
@@TheManzfield7 Wow! I never knew that. Two of the greatest ever--of course they would admire each other. Why am I surprised?! Thanks for this note.
This piece remains a masterpiece and a testimonial to the greatness of SV. She is no doubt the finest female vocalist we ever had. Just listening to her makes the day better. RIP and thank you. You and Ray are my heros
Sassy is both singer and a musician. In that sense she is her own musical backup. Her improvising is second to none. Notice how she "plays" with the melody. Thank you for this video.
+Jay Young You're welcome. Thanks for commenting.
Jay Young. Jay you are right on !
She plays the piano too.
Beautiful song from the 50's.
i have to say she is the best vocalist with the biggest range bar none!!!!
That voice!!! My God how amazing it is!!!!
this is so divine,........ i love this was born in 90... cant understand why we cant have this kind of music
That is just pure unfiltered talent just waiting for me to overdose on.... Unreal!
Sarah Vaughan was one of a kind. The divine one was truly that.
This is ........speachless really, her voice is outer space.
This is before I was born but let me tell you, I am simply left amazed at the vocals. What a voice! She's one of the best period.
Невероятно красиво.искусство в высшей степени!спасибо за музыку,за голос.
How do you handle such a fragile musical instrument with such flawless confidence?, please someone explain this phenomenon, oh my heart simply weeps with a deep emotion and gratitude ♥️
Beautiful
Harmonic wise Sarah Vaughan commands emotion, lingering ever so, easing sharp onto the sweet spot for a a second or less...
Such a unic way to say , or better sing , the beloved heart of it !
Sarah was the best.
excellence personified.....
She got that power..she can pull you in a different world only with her voice..that is why I love her most of all..Billy H. also got that power but not in a same level if you know what I ment..
Beyond perfect.
To call her singing merely perfect would be a terrible injustice.
East coaster --- I totally agree --- the greatest female American singer ever --- there will never be another --- her music is forever
Nothing compares, for me. And I've heard many great ones.
Enjoying every juicy morsel of this timeless music. Ahhh....Sarah!
Simply “Devine”.
Une des plus grandes voix du jazz
Truly a singer's singer. A superb vocal musician with an amazing sound. Unique. No one like her today.
Голос словно мёд разливается по душе, через уши! Супер!
I loved Sarah...
Wow! My favorite singer. Four octave rang. What power!
MAGNIFIQUE, je me répète.....
This song take my feeling to the other space
Sass, Billie, Carmen, Anita, Ella my faves. Also Morgana, June, Chris.....They all had something to say but Sass and Billie are my top two. Billie was so soulful and Sass had such a monumental command of her instrument that did anything she wanted! She thought of it, she could do it.
Noreen Jackson I’m glad you include Chris .whitney ,Aretha , also
what an amazing voice. my dad always listened to Sarah when i was little. in love all over again..
no one sings it like this lady!
She kills you softly and then you fall for her voice.
Sublime. This is the very best version of this great love song

Unbelievably fabulous! A woman .. a voice! Sassy eternal
Sara Vaughan. simple the best!!

Her sons give me chills. All of her songs

Sarah and Ella... go away everybody else.
The last word in this son is incredible.
Timeless!
We are always taught that nobody is indispensable,......well Sarah Vaughan disproves that axiom.she has been irreplaceable and she always will be.A truly unique talent, and thank goodness those of us who recognize true artistic greatness can continue to enjoy her wonderful technique and smooth mezzo voice.
How lovely is her singing, i´m just memerized by her performance.
I am obsessed with her music!
Love this song so much.and her voise 💝
Her voice was pure feeling
Love, love LOVE THIS SONG😻
Sarah sings it the best of anyone !!!
Kym Sutton this belongs to Billie Holiday! Lady Day "the ultimate Jazz singer"!
monica bella It doesn’t “belong” to anyone. They both were great singers and performed the song well.
@@MsAppassionata IT DOES ! Lady Day eternal ❤
Sarah follows very close behind.
I think I have to agree, but Ella is a close No. 2.
Who in the world would give this a thumbs down??????
ohsnapiam59 People with very poor musical taste. I find it appalling that ANYONE in their right mind would give this a thumbs down.
What interpretation !!!! Simply divine!!!!! Still The best !!!!!!
Qué exquisita interpretación. Una voz apasionada, plena de matices, que acaricia. Bellísimo.
Pure pleasure to hear this one.
Her vibrato is spectacular
Absolutely the most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
I love her omg
Such a beautiful old song!! Love Love her voice❤
Pure and unaided and timeless talent!
Sarah`s very unique vibrato that is partly "pitch" and then "volume" is something that is not heard in Jazz. Some instrmentalists have it, not singers...
You are totally right. Its unheard of in vocals. That's what makes her untouchable. My opinion.
frances pearcy Agreed!
Please listen to my vocals, I sing jazz... thank you
I have this album SARAH is amazing
Oh my...the great Sarah. I felt every bit of her passion in her rendition of The Man I Love...All hale to the magnificent Sarah!
Oh my goodness. Her voice sends chills down my spine!!!! Beautiful
I've always loved Sarah Vaughan and her wonderful expressive voice. I now think of Diana Akudinova, this fantastic young (17) contralto that will just blow you away, whenever I hear Sarah sing.
Yes!
Make me melt. Gotta find that dream girl who thinks of me this way. Sarah'a voice makes dreams. M.
The vocal agility is incredible. The way she plays with the words is so amazing.
This beautiful woman is Countess Vaughn grandma wow
Me hubiera gustado nacer en esa época donde todos escuchaban jazz. ( T . T )
An wonderful singer and an wonderful song! What a conbination!
Je l'ai rencontrée plusieurs fois.. un moment éternel de magie ..
La mia Sarah... Meravigliosa!!
Over twenty years ago you came along, the man I love. You left me in a state of breathlessness from that moment until this very moment. Never have I been so struck by a power of love. You have captured me heart and soul...I only want to love you. Everyday I wait for you, the man that I love. I hope we share a lifetime of true love hand and hand, heart to heart. I love you eternally.
you expressed the words to what I experienced and felt 50 years ago and still to this day, (1968 for us). you are right - I was struck by a power of love, he captured my heart and soul.
Great artist and remarkable singer. A complete artist.
Galego Filme Maravilhosa!!!
Maravilhosa!!!
Thanks.
Just heard this mornings guest, Nicole Farhi the dress designer, on Desert Island Discs (BBC Radio 4) select this track. When she first met her 2nd husband David Hare, the playwright, he had to leave her to go on a pre-arranged holiday. In his absence, she played this record incessantly. I can't say I'm surprised - absolutely fantastic.
In my humble opinion, the greatest version of this all time classic by the wonderful Gershwin brothers.
Stunning!
I really love her voice and her spirit!!!!
Great song.
Thank you.
