- New Super Mario Bros is quite the funny game, especially the now iconic "bah bah", but what exactly is the reason why it is even a thing?! I suppose there is only one Mario way to find this out, and I think that I did not do that at ALL.

The actual reason the Koopas etc go "bah bah" is because Koji Kondo, the composer, wanted the music to play a part in the gameplay and this is where that eventually led to.
Is amusing to me how a comment explains the reason why but not the vídeo asking the question.

Because NSMB DS was built off of 64DS, the voice sample used for the BAHs are the same as the jingle in Mario 64 for when you're selecting a mission after entering a painting

Its a bit zoomed in but when we were younger didnt really notice the many pixels and the low resolution because the games before that were as or even more pixelated
yea as a kid i thought sonic adventure 2 looked super high quality. but then i revisited the game year later, and it did not look nearly as good as i thought

the bah bah type beat is in the underwater levels too, when theres a twinkle sound, the cheep cheeps do a little spin in the water.

Nah, I think it’s just to make the enemies a little more interesting in their movement, the bah bah’s aren’t unpredictable, but if you’re aiming to jump on a moving koopa and it stops that matters. Besides the goombas hopping makes them more dangerous.
I don’t think anyone playing mario will have difficulty jumping on a moving enemy unless they’ve never played a 2d platformer in their entire life.
The Bah sound effect is possible thanks to MIDI programming. They programmed Bah sample with the animation. That’s why they dance when Bah sample is triggered. This wouldn’t be possible on streamed audio (such as .wav or .mp3)

Something I learned from the Mario Wiki is that the original sample was not a "bah," but was actually a "pah" sound. The same article also mentioned that the sample was also used in SM64, as another commenter pointed out. An alternate "bah" used in New Super Mario Bros was a "tah" sample, used in the underground and desert themes.

So much of this video is padding so I'll summarize: It's (allegedly) to freeze them in place for beginners so they have the chance to try and jump on them
Which makes no sense, because you'd have to perfectly time your jumps, and goombas hop instead of stopping, which means the BAHs would make it even harder.

Well, we have the Rhythm Jump badge, which gives you coins to jumping to the beat.
I don't think they are going to add it to wonder because the overworld theme would be insane seeing the enemies react to the music and some of the other music doesn't seem to have them.
