- "Friday" is the latest Monkey House album on Alma Records, released on July 26, 2019. The band played to a standing room only audience at Hugh's Room Live in Toronto on July 22, 2019 to celebrate the release of "Friday". We will be posting one song a month from that concert. Enjoy!
While Monkey House was recording Friday in 2017, Steely Dan co-founder Walter Becker died. We wanted to cover one of his songs as an homage, and selected "Book of Liars" from Walter's 1994 solo debut 11 Tracks of Whack. Since then, it has become a centrepiece of our live shows; this performance is from our 2019 album release bash at Hugh's Room in Toronto. Enjoy! - DB
The Band:
Don Breithaupt - lead vocals and keyboards
Justin Abedin - guitars
Mark Kelso - drums
Pat Kilbride - bass
John Johnson - saxes
William Sperandei - trumpet
Ian Jutsun - background vocals
Produced by Peter Cardinali and Don Briethaupt
Awesome guys!!!
Love this tune! GREAT band!!!
nice.
Just oozes class...
Walter Becker plays with you in heaven. Chapeau
Steely Dan also performed this tune on their Alive in America album (recorded live in concert) that came out back in 90s. Of course, Becker sang lead vocal.
What a great song! God bless Walter Becker and Monkey House for this excellent cover!!!
Walter would love it!
The groove is sooo trippy, I'm not sure which way my head should bob!! Great feel and musicality overall.
Mark! Amazing feel, and that lopsided shuffle!!
Great rendition of Walter Becker's tune! Props props more props!
I can't beleive a band this good was playing and Hugh's I had no idea :(
Yes, the sun has set, but this group gifts us a sunrise. The drum groove? I think it's just further up in the mix and less camouflaged by other goings-on. Come to think of it, " Camouflage it with other goings-on" could pretty much sum up Steely Dan's M.O.
I really like this version of the song. Everything about it, really. Cheers
Don this is absolutely gorgeous. Friday is one of my all-time favourite albums, and I so look forward to a new release from you this year or early next year. All the best!
Nice to see there was life after 'Friends' for Matthew Perry.
I sincerely hope you will be able to come to the UK at some point. I have to see you guys perform. Incredible.
Perfect for 'Ronnie Scott's'!!
Such fine musicians. I cannot WAIT to see them live.
It shows the level of absolute class that gou guys (DF) make this a amazing song a staple of your live shows. I was fortunate enough to watch WB perform this when I saw them in '93 (I believe it was the box set tour). I turn everyone who claims to be a SD fan onto this song. I was blown away seeing and hearing it for the first time.RIP Walter Becker
You've given me so much joy and turned me onto so many things; Charly Parker "Parker's Band" etc etc
The guys play very nice music. Reminds me a lot of my favorites Steely Dan .
Great cover boys :)
Loving the new cd and loving turning my friends onto your sound!!!
This is a wonderful arrangement. And a fitting tribute to Walter. Very grateful that you have been releasing these live versions. Is a live bootleg on the way? I’m down! My vote for next release is Nine O'Clock Friday but any will do.
Miss you Walter Becker. RIP. Except I need you to send down to me your bass lessons and help. Jaco has. Now it's your turn.
Excellent ❤️🎷🎸🎹🥁🎤🎼
Lovely treatment but curious about the time signature. The syncopated drums and delayed snare hit make it feel like something other than the 4/4 groove of the original. Until the fade when it seems straight ahead. Comments?
seems that with the triplet eighths there is also an implied two against three feel.
Sounds like 4/4 to me
The drum groove is identical to the original, but yes, the displaced kick and cross stick get your attention! It's all solidly in 4...
@@donbreithaupt4700 tango by yourself and the art of starting over are my 2 favorite MH tunes. not just bc of the music lol although that flugel solo in the latter gets me every time.
@@sampowellmusic 4/4 for sure!
Love it
Legit. The Dan are in there. Where is Carolyn Leonhart?
Walter's smilin down on this
