this is the first run at the dragstip. I didn't run the fire show down the track and I got on the brakes before the end of the 1/8th mile. 7.65 at 96 mph. 1.87 60 foot time.
Somewhere there is a very angry helicopter owner who woke up one morning and discovered that somebody removed his turboshaft and installed a Dodge 3.3 liter V6 in its place.
Hold brakes hard put front engine in drive, spool up to 100%, then when your ready, let go of the brake, floor the gas pedal and start screaming! 0-100 mph in less than 7 seconds all day! gimme camaro, corvette, mustang!

one of the last engineering projects is almost done. The engine now extends and retracts out the back window via a small drive motor and as it travels back it pushes the back window open. The van will be able to go from soccer mom mode to dragstrip terror with the push of a button located in the cockpit. Imagine the look on the faces of the tailgaters. This year will be the year that we really get to enjoy this project.
@Fire Tribal is that a fact that you know or an assumption, because helicopter turbine engines can _very_ easily be disconnected from the gearbox that couples (and steps down the rpm inbetween) gas generator shaft and output shaft
Are you still taking this beast out to the drags? It is a great conversation piece no matter what. Do you run other vehicles against it? Thanks Cool Set up- oh and What's it cost to build - maintain - run ?
The fact you use it everyday explains allot of he design choices. Cool, excentric! The piece connecting the turbine to the drive shaft looks like a really impressive piece of machinery!
"Wait a minute. Wait a minute Doc, uh, are you telling me you built a time machine... out of a minivan?!"... Ebert and Ropert Proclaim..."'Soccer Mom goes back to the Future'...A romping success! If you see only one movie this holiday season...let it be 'Soccer Mom Goes back to the future!'"
Essentially a custom PTO mini van style. :) Very cool! However, wouldn't it be more efficient to put some sort of release on the side doors, so they can be removed prior to... Dare I say, "take off"? :P
@TheMellophone4life Haha, that's what I was thinking! You'd definitely solve the "Driving on my ass" problem with some jerks. If they get too close, they'll know; their windshield will start melting. :P
Just out of curiousity, what was your best time with this thing? (Awesome setup, btw- I've always wanted to give this a try ever since I ran a PT6 in a test cell...I was thinking of mounting a J79 in a van haha)
@iminyourbasement I left the vans front wheel drive stock. I removed the vans rear axle and replaced it with a custom 9 inch ford axle. The turbine makes 2150 rpm and 2500 ftlb torque at just off 0 rpm. The output goes to a transfer case with a 2.25:1 overdrive, this drops through the floor and connects to the rear axle with a used NASCAR detroit locker and 3.50:1 gears.
Then a drive shaft from the chain case goes rearward to a custom-built rear axle to drive the rear wheels directly. The shaft from the jet engine's gearbox has been measured to provide over 1800ft/Lbs of torque! Quite a feat to harness that sort of force.
Damn, I went through all this trouble for nothing? Maybe I just needed to get the stock motor tuned up! I feel like such an idiot! I guess I'll just park it behind the house and stay inside.
its obviously got a mechanical linkage to the rear wheels, but what is there as far as transmission/differential? You've got the turbine spooled all the way up and then you drop the clutch or something.
I never understood why they always blow lots of smoke and fire out the back before finally zooming off. Is it just for show or is warming up or something?
Amazing fast! 7.65 seconds. I see you have the doors open for extra air. My 73 Monte Carlo I could get a low ten second pass in the 1/8 mile, but it's not made for drag racing. Just a strong 350 I built.
why would the tires blow? jet engines aren't that heavy, nor does the rest of the van get in contact with the flames. actually you can se that most of the acceleration is from the engine in the car, or else it wouldn't had tilted that much backwards when driving of
the whole idea is I can hide the turbine in the back of the van until I'm ready to use it. You have no idea how much fun we have when we come by someone who thinks their car is fast and we tell them our van is faster and point to a stock looking Dodge van! Yes, the van is uncool, that's why we picked it.
@cumesoftware I keep the stock engine so I can drive it around. I also show people the stock engine when I tell them I want to race them, they see it and think the van is slow until i open up the back and they see the turbine
@DaylightRobberyCA There's a separate power turbine wheel that drives the rear wheels, the turbine is blowing on it but it's stopped. As soon as I let off the brake the power turbine spins up really fast. Direct drive.
@sirconnorman hell yeah it's pretty funny. Whada ya mean it's not sporty? did you see the wing on the back?!??#*(^#@) Come on by, you buy the beer and food, I'll buy the fuel and we'll go for a ride!
@delmarian The turbine comes right out, the original motor is still there and is what powers it most of the time. When I use the original motor and the turbine at the same time, that's when it goes fastest
Where do you get theese ingines, an what did you pay? if I may inquire. An have you ever driven it on the streets, bet it would be funny in the drive thru.lol
I think it's a combination of things, one is the way the torque curve ramps up, another is that there's so much weight on the rear wheels. Going to full throttle with the stock V6 right when I launch seems to help with the weight transfer too
this van is BADASS seriously dude nice job man. this van is the inspiration that I'm looking for to build my super sleeper 1993 dodge caravan with 3.0l twin turbo v6 engine from a Mitsubishi 3000gt vr4
that one hell of a van :D no chance of being late for work no more ;D good job on the van, i gotta ask though whats the top speed on that, im guessing its FAST
You're missing the point of this project - It's not a "technology demonstrator" to show the future of public transport on the highways. It's a show vehicle, a generator of noise and fire with a little speed thrown in. Sure E-power can produce better power-to-weight performance but if it makes flames and noise, something is horribly amiss!
the van closes up and looks stock, when people tailgate we open it and they stop tailgating. it annoys the crap out of them if they're trying to focus on their phone call.
I love how much of it is factory. Factory lights, wheels, color, dashboard, even a soccer ball sticker on the back.
Wonder if the brakes are factory 🤣

Is it because the pipes alone would be intimidating??

"No Honey, *I'll do the grocery shopping from now on."*
it's not thrust powered, those are just exhaust ducts. The nozzles are inside in a ring blowing on a power turbine that's hooked to the rear wheels

BTW sick minivan...Can't wait to see a 1/4 mile pass!!!! Ignore all the haters, and keep that van rolling!
is the van powered by thrust or shaft rotation?
shaft, pulls like a freight train
its a turboshaft

@genenco1 there's a light "door ajar" that comes on, this confirms it is unsafe.
thanks, yes, it's automatic for the front wheel drive and the turbine is direct drive to the rear wheels
best performance to date: 1/8th mile 7.14 at 103, 1/4 mile 11.17 at 118 mph. Should have it in the 10 second range soon

its obviously got a mechanical linkage to the rear wheels, but what is there as far as transmission/differential? You've got the turbine spooled all the way up and then you drop the clutch or something.
Did you have to redo the brakes or are standard brakes enough to hold back the thrust of the engines? Just wondering, I have no plans of building one.
I have no idea about turbine engines but how is the turbine connected to the wheels? I thought the air coming out of the back is what powered it...?
