So, my daily driver desktop is a used Dell Precision 5820 workstation running an Intel Xeon W-2140B QMVZ-- a "qualification sample" for a CPU designed to run on the 27 inch iMac Pro. It works perfectly and I got it for $110 on eBay. It is even Windows 11 compatible.
Had a lot QS cpu's, and some ES, currently have two i9-7920X QS QHN9 i love that Intel allowing or not fighting against ES/QS cpu sales, which can be found for cheap price
Jokes that would effect share prices falsely, tend to get frowned upon by the FCC - ask Elon about that. However, great day to announce bad news as many will be like - it's a joke and dismiss it ;).
Fair to assume QS’s don’t ever receive or rarely receive microcode updates to deal with vulnerabilities. Also confused on 5220R - Xeon Gold 5220R is a 24 core chip per ARK.
QS chips recieve microcode updates most of the times as long as the QS uses the same cpuid as the retail one. The only time I know where a QS didnt recieve them was on ivy bridge, ivy QS = 306A8 ivy retail = 306A9
Yours right. I think he meant the Gold 5220 which is an 18-core CPU. The Gold 5220R with suffix R for revised came out later than their non-R counterparts and are higher power and core count CPUs.
It seems like the background is more in focus than you. Anyways, I enjoyed your explanation of Intel engineering samples and appreciate the time stamps. The first AMD ZEN silicon sounds really interesting. I'd like to hear more about that first ZEN A0 silicon and why it had to run cold.
Hi Ian! Do you have by any chance any info about Alder lake ATX12VO motherboards and power supplies? I know there was talk about this long time ago, but now when the launch is quite near, I literaly cant find anything. No announcement, no leaks, nothing. It almost looks like as if it was cancelled completely.
I got a 10700k from American retailer B&H at launch and it says Intel Confidential on it. I don’t remember what the spec on it is, it’s currently in use.
I bought what was meant to be an 18 core broadwell xeon that shows up as low clock 8 core cpu. I assumed it was just a fake, but from what you're saying could it just be my motherboard?
Can anyone help me identify one of these... It is.. and i quote Core i(mc)10 QC11 ES 3.30mhz Malay es L142C243 core i10?? Am I to understand this is a Core i10 Engineering Sample at 3.3mhz?
Intel Confidential is useless in HPE servers and likely on all branded servers as well. Also, next best thing to arrive to Intel server CPUs is a vendor locking and any 3rd party sourcing of them will be very shaky.
Ian. your LInode American accent - always makes me chuckle.
That's meant to be an american accent!?
@@fgfsgdomagerd he's taken elements from a US accent, but he's not a specialist at it .. it's not supposed to be too accurate
It's what they call 'a parody'
Kinda reminds me of Moore's Law is Dead's ad spots.
He needs to never change 🥰
5:47 I can confirm this information, mobile or industry SoCs I worked on got only 2 tapeouts, the last one being mass production.
It gives answers to some of the lifecycle questions I asked previously. Thanks a lot for the content!
Oh man, looking forward to that interview with Mike. Imagine needing a chiller to test a CPU...

Yes! been waiting for the funky CPU story's.
Hope you cover the intel blackops family, the romance of a off books line is cool.
I'll be meeting up with Dan Ragland in a couple of months, he'll be the best person to ask
The 10 second intro with 80s music is superb.

Intel should 'recall' all chips for april fools and watch everyone squirm.

A little trolling is always fun.

I'm really enjoying your content. Learning a lot, and from a PhD tater 😁. That's awesome.
you're back!
I want your tee shirt. The C-64 was the best computer I had until I bought a Core 2 Duo MacBook.
Bro what the difference between Tray and Es processor?

It's aimed at OEMs and pre-builts, and it'll take many generations to be mainstream. Expect to hear not much for a few years
@@TechTechPotato SFFs focused MITX boards will probably start shifting over to 12VO quite a bit earlier than mainstream I'd imagine.
thanks for making a video about this
Always informative
Your background is one big IKEA placement. They should sponsor you.
Sorry, IKEA does not do such sponsorships.
Thanks, another interesting episode.

6 extra cores you mean?
Can't help but feel some curious timing on this video... What with all of the Alder Lake chips floating about?
A couple of people in my discord requested a detailed explanation in video form months ago
@@TechTechPotato Ah, that's a much more sensible and boring explanation, thanks :D
Can you do a video covering Intel Alderlake CPU?
When he gets a motherboard, yeah.

Search over at cpu-world.com for QC11. It looks like an i5-3550 engineering sample.
I've seen i9 12900k versions of these. For half the price of a 12900k . Would these actually be a ok buy ?
Comparing to retail, they are slightly slower.
CPU-Z
ES-Single Thread: 720~
RETAIL-Single Thread: 800~
ES-Multi Thread: 10000~
RETAIL-Multi Thread: 11000~
Can you do this with AMD CPU too ?
Not so much discrete info on AMD, but it's probably very similar
Are you daily driving surface studio laptop?
No that's just a G14 I'm using for recording right now
@@TechTechPotato thanks
5220R is actually 24core, 5220 has just 18 cores

Vendor locking already occurs with AMD EPYCs.
My minimum specification at the moment is an 8700K and 3090

.... I definitely don't have one of those... Definitely don't
