Video Games are normally very fixable by simple methods. I've rarely had them not work with a little know-how (and that's 99% of the time to be an incomplete connection, usually from the metal contacts oxidizing) but on some occasions, they just don't work. Even then, they're better off sold on eBay, if they're not fixable by the owner.
Just wanted to thank you for your “isolate the variable when troubleshooting” part at the end. Although I watched 3-4 videos before yours, that was the comment that led me to switch my HDMI cord for one that I knew worked which solved my issue immediately. Thanks!
I just spend the last 2 HOURS! Trying to figure out why my super nes was not powering on bare bones.... who would of thought I needed to put in the rf shield!? 😖 You saved me another 2 hours of checking and re checking continuity. Thanks so much!!
Yeah on a personal note on the SNES the pin connector can be removed just like the original nes to clean under it because it gets dirty as well when you pull the board from the plastic bottom shell and just pull up on it and then clean it up
I really enjoy both the content and production quality of the views you create. In addition to providing the knowledge, you also put time into your production (especially lighting) to help deliver your thoughts. I think it would be great if you made a SNES troubleshooting video that dives into repair beyond cleaning. I enjoy repairing systems quite a bit, and the Super Nintendo is definitely a system where helpful pointers go a long way. The most notable of these (in my opinion) is the sensitive pico fuse next to the voltage regulator. In addition to this being a simple repair for a non-functional SNES, it can easily blow during servicing if the residual charge isn't first drained from the system (flipping the power switch to the on position after disconnecting power). Something as simple as a power switch making brief contact with the PCB after it has been unscrewed from the mounting post can blow that fuse. The good news is that you are only looking at 50 cents + some simple soldering to get things back up and running.
Something like that happened at my friend's house today. (We hooked up their mom's old SNES.) I put in Super Mario All-Stars, and I could choose which game I wanted to play, but when I entered Super Mario Bros., it wouldn't let me move Mario for some reason. And no, the problem wasn't the controller because when I put in Super Mario World, I could actually move Mario and all the other things. Must be something wrong with the RAM or ROM. (In the cartridge, not the console.)
A faulty controller will also make your perfectly working console do weird things while that particular controller is plugged into it. I plugged in a know working controller and after pressing the reset button it started working normally again.
I gave a thumbs up because I feel what you said here is indeed valuable, yet this video title is "troubleshooting" which left me where I was before seeing this, not knowing how to troubleshoot my snes.. maybe a response or short vid on what to do?
Well, I got two of them. One cosmetically is worse for wear but its electronics work...it only wants to boot up Super Mario World and inconsistently boots other games --if it even boots them at all. Like you I am not the original owner. I hope these troubleshoots and solutions will solve the problem. A clean of the connector probably needed. I guess. The other one hasn't discolored but...not only did it have a mechanical problem with the flap door opening (holding piece attached to power switch was stuck), but it has all kinds of rust and FILTH on the inside. IMHO this board is toast, plain and simple. Hopefully some components like the 7805 voltage regulator and associate parts are salvageable. In fact one of the RAM chips on the board has a speck of something on it and the part# printing around it visibly discolored and the plastic darkened. Won't power on for anything and power adapter peg in the hole got damaged.
I'm worried there might be something wrong with my SNES: the console works fine, it plays every game I've thrown at it so far, but when I play A Link To The Past, I seem to get these dodgy squares in the game's environment, the squares are small and are the same and in the same places every time I play. Some are parts of the environment with inverted colors, some are black squares, looking as if I might fall through them but I don't, some just look messy. They're not visible when I stand on them. I have not seen this on any other game, and if the results are the same with Link To The Past every time I play, it may be a problem with the cart or possibly the system.
Sounds like the cart to me. I recommend trying it in another SNES if possible. If you have the same problems on another console, it's definitely the cart.
You said the main problem was that you needed to clean it up. What do you mean exactly? Just vacuuming or cleaning off dust? Or are you cleaning off contacts for the cartridge? What would you recommend cleaning it with and how?
91% or 99% isopropyl alcohol works wonders with an old toothbrush, some qtips, and clean napkins to dry the pins off. Do this on both the game cartridges and also on the console pins. Make sure everything is dry as a bone before powering the console back on. Good luck!
Hey out of curiosity, would you consider fixing a SNES in a video if I mail it to you? I've opened it a couple times but ended up just getting another and putting it unit in my old housing (for sentimental purposes). Basically, it works for some games, but others, there is a black screen or freezing in the beginning. The game will start but all you can hear is the music or it freezes. It's the strangest thing. I've taken all the games apart and fully cleaned them, cleaned the inside of the SNES etc...I tried so many things but I can't seem to get it to work. I'd like to see if you can fix it. If you can, it's yours!
what am I to do if mine is connected to the tv, but the tv shows “no signal” and tells me to check the cable connection, etc? I unplugged both cables from the USB port and replugged them and it’s still saying this. Is this an issue with the console or is it my tv?
My snes console is half Yellow (the bottom half) and half semi yellow lol. It is also very brittle so I am very hesitant on taking it apart and restoring it's original color. It also shuts off if the slightest bump of the game cartridge occurs.
I'm having a weird problem with my childhood SNES. It randomly acts like the start button has been pressed mid game even though I hadn't touched it. I'm using 2 first party controllers that work fine on another SNES I have, I've swapped out the controller ports (including ribbon) and it still does it. Have you ever seen this before? And if so, is there any info you could give me on how to track down and fix the problem?
I just turned on my old snes after years of it being in a box, everything seemed good until I got into a game and some of the sprites would not render completely and had artifacts. It was only some of the sprites and not the entire game. For example, the health bar in mmx would be all glitched out but mega man looked fine. I tried Zelda and it had the same issue. The bombs and certain enemies would be all glitched out but link looked okay. Any idea why this would be?
real helpful. plugged in my SNES for the first time in awhile and its needs some serious help. hope it just needs cleaning. need to get me the security bit first.
I have also just now noticed a problem with Donkey Kong Country where whenever I play a level I get either a fully or partially green-screen. Anything that can be done about this?
Hi, the problem can be the cartridge, you can clean it with 90-99% alcohol and a q-tip, if it still shows the green thing it can be the pin connector, try cleaning it with a new toothbrush and scrub it with the alcohol, it should work
Recently got one and the port won't except games I'm assuming the person who sold it (well their child) shoved something in the port preventing it from being used... Might explain why they sold it

Snes controller works when the console is running about 5 minutes the controller won't respond I assume it has something to do with the motherboard it hasn't been cleaned up yet. The controller post has been replaced it works for a bout 5 minutes then the controller slowly stops working unit only the b button works
my sis just brought me an snes and a hand full of games. console needs some tlc, this helped a bit. pretty much the same thing I did to my NES to bring it back to life.
Question for you! Picked up a retron super nes. Games play all buttons on controllers work. However, Donkey Kong country comes on just fine but cannot get the game to start. Any ideas? Cleaned cartridge

I think I've heard crappy 3rd party AC adapters can cause vertical lines; you might want to get an official AC adapter made by Nintendo. I'm not 100% sure though if that's your problem.
Got one today.Tested with a 100% working game.Unit has red light.Powers on, no sound or pic on tv.Switch from ch 3 to 4 or game console and can see on tv black or white as they do.So that tells me signal is getting to tv for most part part. That said, get power, game good, black screen on tv or any game tested with.Issue would be? I do see see pit and build up on silver on pin cove inside.Clean everything will solve odds are?
Did you get this issue sorted? I have the exact same problem and i get the black screen with no audio on rf and absolutely no audio or video output on composite
Sounds like a dead CPU to me, but I'm not an expert. If cleaning everything with isopropyl alcohol doesn't work, and you can't see any visible damage(use a magnifying glass) on the motherboard; it's probably a dead chip.
Hi Collin. When I turn it on its fine the cartridges are fine. The only problem is the screen is black. I can hear the sound game but I can't play without seeing the screen. I have tried cleaning and switching multiple parts but nothing seems to work.
I cleaned out my super nintendo because when turned on id get a vertical green line without a cartridge. With a game in. Its scattered pixels of the game. I cleaned it out and I still have the same issue. Any ideas?
Hi, it sounds to me that there is a problem in one of the chips inside, you can search some videos here on UA-cam of how to fix the blurred image or you can go and get it fixed in a console repair shop in your city
What do you do if the game restarts when you bump it while running? Like it tilts slightly if you touch the cartridge while running, and it resets the game.
I recently bought a snes (pal) of ebay u e cleaned it and it switches on but when it hit the Nintendo presents screen then goes black its not the games they have been cleaned and tested can you help please?
Hi Colin! Could you restore the color to the shell using hydrogen peroxide like you did for the Gamecube? Great videos by the way, keep up the awesome work!
Soo i walked in on my 2yr old with a spray bottle of water and squirting my super Nintendo like a week ago.... haven't tried it untill today and go figure. It doesnt work
@@project_ej2 Your console should be fine if it wasn't on when it got wet; you just need to make sure that it's completely dry before you turn it back on for future reference. I think the Snes holds a little energy when turned off, but I'm not sure if that would effect anything.
hey, every time I turn on my SNES the red light turns on for a second but then turns off really quick the console don't turn on but the red light still shows for like a second how should I fix it?
Have you tested the power adapter you're using it with? If you're sure the power adapter works, then it could be that the F1 fuse has been blown and needs to be replaced, but it could also be that one or more capacitors on the board have stopped working (and if the fuse has gone out, it may have also blown the caps). Those are the three things I would check first anyway, but it could be anything.
For me, the power indicator flashed and went out. After replacing the pico fuse it did the same thing. It blew the fuse. I then changed both the fuse and the 5V Regulator. Then it worked great.@@TalonTheRetroGamer
My SNES is telling me that I cant "Make unauthorized copies" and the console wont let me save games with any cartridge I use. I have no clue why it's doing this.. anyone have any idea why?
Meek Game save issues should be related to the game itself as that's where the game saves are stored. There is a battery in the game cartridge that is usually the reason for game save issues. Replacing the battery isn't too difficult if you don't mind getting parts and soldering.
I have the new style smaller snes I put the game in and hit power and it doesn’t work immediately after I hit the switch on and off a couple times it works ,when it does work any little tap on snes and the game freezes . So I put a credit card behind the game to hold the cartridge in place and the problem is fixed ,if any one could tell me why the games don’t fit correctly and are lose fitting in the console ?
my snes was in perfect condition, but when i recently plugged it in, it read and played fine, only issue was the player2 port. only one button would work. thought it was the controller, but id connect it to the player1 port, it worked fine. dont know if its the port or motherboard. has anyone had this problem?
I’ve got a 1995 Curtis mathes CRT 133AV Television 📺 and I don’t get sound or video , when I use input line I get nothing on channel 3 or 4 I really need help someone please save me I really want to play my Super Nintendo.
Hey, can you help me out I have a Snes System with a rusty Antenna hookup. No matter which Rf Cable I use I cannot get video from it. It powers on just fine however. +This Does Not Compute @This Does Not Compute.
My Super Nintendo turns on and loads games and stuff but when I try to use the controller no buttons work when I press 1 it seems to click all.i just got a new controller port and that one does not work either plz help
Make sure the ribbon cable is fully inserted into the console. The ribbon cable goes from the controller port piece to the console. But be careful. That cable can be easily damaged.
Could someone help me I know this is not related to the subject of the video but I booted up my SNES to play super Mario kart but for some reason when I did, it didn’t look right at all. The off-road green grass you see on the very first track of the game took the whole road to the point where I can’t see the road and same exact problem for the map on the bottom it’s all light green and I can’t see the road to play. Is the game cartridge the problem or the SNES because I booted up another game and couldn’t see the characters. Both the games are old I personally think it’s the games because they are both brown on the bottom and old could someone help me
Clean the console pins and game pins with isopropyl alcohol really well(look up some UA-cam videos to learn how) If that doesn't fix it; it sounds like a chip has went bad on your SNES; the only fix if that happens is to desolder the good chip from a working SNES and put it on yours which isn't easy.
I would probably point to the cartridge since the other game works fine. Take it apart and clean it first, or just clean it before taking it apart. Just use rubbing alcohol or windex and a Q-tip or more if necessary. 9 out of 10 times the problem is usually dirty contacts on the cartridge itself. If that doesn't fix the problem check the board for broken solder or traces. Otherwise it could be a chip or the Rom itself. Hope that helps as this is a passion and hobby of mine on the side.
my game works but when i plug in the controller like on the mario duck hunt combo it switched between the two without me touching anything is it the controller or the system plz help :(
Hi! I have had this SNES controller for a long time that's L-button is not working. So I took it apart today, cleaned all the parts and put it back together. But now the R-button doesn't work either! So all the other buttons work great, except L and R buttons. I have no idea what the problem is. I used a multimeter to determine that current gets through the connection when button is being pressed. I see no visible damage to the circuit board or wiring inside the controller. Do you have any ideas? ;)
Hello, I was wondering if you could take a look at a video I posted, pointing at chip near my snes fuse that seems to be messed up, I wanted to get your opinion, if it's a lost cause or if there is something I can do. I bought the snes off eBay for a few bucks so I'm just trying to fix it to have a good back up. Anyway, thanks for looking and great videos, love this channel
Or pay someone else to do that hahahahah I'm dumb to fix this kinda stuff, so it'll save me a lot of time and headaches more than doing it myself poorly.
How do u fix The super nintendo, When you play a game ( Ex- Donkey kong country) and It says "This product will not operate when Makes Unauthorized Copies"

I have a snes that will play only a few games but won't play most and it's not the games the games work on other SNES just not this one but it will play only a few games and I donno why any idea?
Six years later and this gift keeps on giving. My partner was devastated when their SNES “died” and this is what I needed to get it fixed! Thanks
Video Games are normally very fixable by simple methods. Even then, they're better off sold on eBay, if they're not fixable by the owner.

For me, the power indicator flashed and went out. After replacing the pico fuse it did the same thing. It blew the fuse. I then changed both the fuse and the 5V Regulator. Then it worked great.@@TalonTheRetroGamer
Hi tuned in my Nintendo when I bought it tuned it in work no problems next day would not display so got the scary adepter stil won't display any tips
My problem with my super Nintendo is all three of my controllers don’t work every button just hits pause even the D pad just pauses the game
My SNES is telling me that I cant "Make unauthorized copies" and the console wont let me save games with any cartridge I use. I have no clue why it's doing this.. anyone have any idea why?
Bruh
My super famicom suddenly has no sound while playing. i do not know what's wrong
How Colin what about if your Super Nintendo doesn't save game I'm having trouble on donkey kong #2
Meek Game save issues should be related to the game itself as that's where the game saves are stored. There is a battery in the game cartridge that is usually the reason for game save issues. Replacing the battery isn't too difficult if you don't mind getting parts and soldering.
What did you use to get these screws out
Gamebit driver
Yes I have this problem did you ever find a cause
I’ve got a 1995 Curtis mathes CRT 133AV Television 📺 and I don’t get sound or video , when I use input line I get nothing on channel 3 or 4 I really need help someone please save me I really want to play my Super Nintendo.
Hey, can you help me out I have a Snes System with a rusty Antenna hookup. No matter which Rf Cable I use I cannot get video from it. It powers on just fine however. +This Does Not Compute @This Does Not Compute.
Try cleaning it
here is with mine, with RFU and with the RCA i have all crystal clear video but 0 sound just a anyoing "hUUMMMMMMMM " like a humming o buzzing
Both the games are old I personally think it’s the games because they are both brown on the bottom and old could someone help me
Clean the console pins and game pins with isopropyl alcohol really well(look up some UA-cam videos to learn how) If that doesn't fix it; it sounds like a chip has went bad on your SNES; the only fix if that happens is to desolder the good chip from a working SNES and put it on yours which isn't easy.
ive been trying to play super mario rpg but the screen goes black when i try to play it but if i put in final fight it plays that game
Hope that helps as this is a passion and hobby of mine on the side.
atranfanatic yeah thanks for trying to help I’ll just a refund and maybe pick up another game
I can’t get rid of blue screen for my Super Nintendo 😭
hey would it mess it up
my game works but when i plug in the controller like on the mario duck hunt combo it switched between the two without me touching anything is it the controller or the system plz help :(
but its on just the nes like original
My guess would be a short somewhere in the controller. You might want to try buying/borrowing another one and see if the problem still happens.
i figured it out i just dad to clean the 72 pin connecter but thanks for ur help
Do you have any ideas? ;)
my super Nintendo hasn't been used since my mom was a little girl I really want to play super Mario world I don't know if its wires
Thanks
Dexter’s Son 😂🤙
Or pay someone else to do that hahahahah I'm dumb to fix this kinda stuff, so it'll save me a lot of time and headaches more than doing it myself poorly.
I think mine is just a goner
My console opens in black and white and the image is fucked up I cant play
it's the region lock problem. Make sure your tv and your game is on the same region
