-18 is too low. You should record the highest possible without distortion

If you’re in an untreated room and you drive your preamps loud the vocals may be harsh cos of resonance. In that same untreated room, if there is noise and you record too low, the noise may end up almost same level as your vocal. In my opinion.. if your room is not treated don’t go for as loud as possible.. just go for a healthy signal
