Passion is what drives the Champion fancier. Without it there cannot be the necessary dedication that leads to super performances. Looking at the career of A. P. Overwater of the Dutch town of Strijen, this simple truth is once again confirmed. His passion for the pigeons started when he was just nine years old. He found a pigeon in the garden, kept it and a fellow fancier gave him another two birds. His parents supported the new hobby of their son, and presto…
some fifty years later we have a long distance icon with an impressive records list and a just as impressive colony of marathon flyers. Since 1984 the Overwater loft is situated at its current location in Strijen, just south of Rotterdam, in a region of the Netherlands were the competition consists of among others the lofts of Saarloos and Son, Ad Fortuin, Nederpelt, van de Velden and Son and Batenburg-Van de Merwe. In other words: winning here isn’t exactly a given. Every race is a hard battle against such top fanciers and you really have to be on top of your game to stay afloat in such a competitive environment. Needless to say A. P. Overwater knew from the beginning he needed top class material to hold his own, so initially he went to Peter van den Eijnden, a top racer of the ZLU and owner of a performance line inbred towards the famous “131” of Jan de Weert. Peter’s top bird at the time was the “55”, a son of “131”.
A. P. secured a grandson of this outstanding racer and breeder, which in turn became the grandfather of “Super As”, one of his foundation cocks. As the “131” was a descendant of the famous “Oud Doffertje”, A. P. Overwater with this move immediately secured the Jan Aarden bloodline, one of the most successful long distance lines ever, firmly on his loft. The second fundamental input came from Bas and Hugo Batenburg. Here A. P. managed to get the “Perpignan Duivin”, a granddaughter of the famous “Witbuik”, champion racer and superbreeder whose offspring scored among others 1st International Acepigeon Perpignan 2010-2011, 2nd International Barcelona, 1st National Bergerac, 1st National Marseille, 1st National Dax, 1st National St. Vincent, 3rd National Bordeaux, 8th National Narbonne, etc. Seeing that “Witbuik” also was of Jan Aarden descent, as was “Perpignan Duivin”’s mother “Lourdes Duivin”, this move clearly shows A. P. had done his homework on long distance racing. After an impressive racing career which included among others a 7th National and International Pau and a 21st National Perpignan, “Perpignan Duivin” became the foundation mother of the Overwater loft. Her son “074” for instance scored no less than 5 times in the top 100 National. Add to this “De Dure”, bought above budget on an auction (hence his name, “the expensive one”), a son of Batenburg top couple “Bonte Kweker” (a son of “Witbuik”) x “Braakhuis Duivin” (mother of among others the 2nd National Dax), and A. P. Overwater now could count on a rock solid base to take on the marathon races.
