I still can’t believe that this scene wasn’t even scripted. Martin told Robert to go in the room and see if he could say something to himself in the mirror, and he came up with all that on the spot basically. Truly amazing.

Well Peter Finch won that year for Network. He was very good in it plus he died after the movie wrapped up so he(Finch) had the sentimental vote. DeNiro had already won two years before for The Godfather 2 and the main reason the movie got made was because he signed unto it, the studio wouldn’t touch it otherwise.

This movie is not prettied or glamourized but real gritty and mean. It is so real how it affects one man viewing garbage, exploitation, politics, and corruption. He lived poor, he was uneducated, and began to fight with violence to save a child from prostitution. This is a very interesting study of a man's sensitivity towards his environment.

What I love about this scene is that Travis is literally looking at himself in the mirror, with all his weapons strapped on, and he doesn't see a villain or madman at all, but he sees instead a hero. The irony is that despite the fact that he is staring directly into the mirror, inviting him to do some inward reflection and gain some awareness of himself, he sees instead the silhouette of a hero in the making, an ideal taken outside of his own inner life (from a western or war movie, perhaps). Looking into the mirror ironically alienates him even more from access to his own subconscious inner world.

I think Travis Bickle is symbolically fighting his "other" self. The first part involved him trying in vain to establish some connection. When he was rejected, the "other" side of him showed up because Travis thought he was destined to be lonely forever and would never be able to be "normal". At the end of this clip, you see his reflection("other" side) say "You're dead". It means the old Travis is no longer here, and the new Travis has replaced him, which led to the murderous rampage.

This is me. Literally me. No other character can
come close to relating to me like this. There is no
way you can convince me this is not me. This
character could not possibly be anymore me. lt's
me, and nobody can convince me otherwise. If
anyone approached me on the topic of this not
possibly being me, then 1 immediately shut them
down with overwhelming evidence that this
character is me. This character is me, it is
indisputable. Why anyone would try to argue that
this character is not me is beyond me. If you held
two pictures of me and this character side by
side, you'd see no difference. I can safely look at
this character every day and say "Yup, that's me". I
can practically see this character every time I look
at myself in the mirror. I go outside and people
stop me to comment how similar I look and act to
this character. I chuckle softly as I'm assured
everyday this character is me in every way. I can
smile each time I get out of bed every morning
knowing that l've found my identity with this
character and I know my place in this world. It's
really quite funny how similar this character is to
me, it's almost like we're identical twins. When I
first saw this character, I had an existential crisis
What if this character was the real me and I was
the fictional being. What if this character actual
became aware of my existence? Did this
character have the ability to become self aware
    itself?

Legend of a film. Watch it for yourself, and tell me how you would even start this review. Seriously an iconic movie, with a top-tier cast, soundtrack, and storyline. Saw this in the summer, and damn what a highlight. It's worth watching. And this will always remain legendary, just like Robert De Niro. So much action, emotion, and darkness. An extremely underrated film, that does not get its credit in modern times. 8.20.2020
