Preemptively answering some potential Questions & Comments
UPDATE - Regarding: REWIND AUTO-PLAY (Thanks to Daniel Anglada)
To engage Rewind Auto Play, you press Rewind and whilst it's rewinding you then have to keep pressing the Rewind button so it doesn't pop up - while you also press Play - both buttons then stay down and when the tape reaches the beginning it automatically starts to play.
In my defence it's not an easy feature to discover accidentally, because pressing the Play button on it's own while the machine is rewinding will just start the deck playing, pressing Rewind while the deck is playing will start the review feature demonstrated at 12:02. On some decks forcing two buttons down like this that operate functions in opposite directions could damage the mechanism, so it’s not the kind of thing I’d normally try.
C1) In that Sony Walkman story at the beginning you didn't mention that Sony also removed the record facility and will have had to replace the circuitry of the Pressman to facilitate stereo playback of cassettes. Also that's not a Sony Pressman.
A) It was a simplification of a regurgitation of an apocryphal tale to create a narrative to position the Technics M1 at a time and a place.
C2) You should have also cleaned the capstan and the roller and insides of the machine.
A) I cleaned these things off camera. The insides were also cleaned with compressed air. There's only so much cleaning I feel I can show in a video before there's too much cleaning footage. This video is an afternoon compressed down into a few minutes.
C3) You should have tried recording by talking into the microphone with the phantom record button pressed
A) I did, but no record circuitry is present.
C4) That date sticker on the motor will be the date the motor was made, not the machine
A) Yep - but with no other visible date to go off - this is as close as it gets.
C5) Those other Technics decks weren't 'high end'
A) For Technics they were some of their better models that year. I suppose I perhaps could have called them ‘mid-range’ but as I didn’t compare them against the entire 1980/1981 range I decided to call them 'Quite High-end' to put a bit of a qualifier on it.
C6) You should never... (insert something I should never do here - probably to do with lithium grease or oil)
A) I'm just an amateur tinkerer - these are things I've bought for myself, not for re-sale. If it breaks, I'm the one who loses out. I'd recommend only pulling things apart that you don't worry too much about breaking. If you are in doubt seek the help of a professional.
C7) You should have...(insert something here that is important to the person commenting but didn't cross my mind).
A) This video was completed on 9th June 2018...so anything missing from it at that point will forever remain absent. However the great thing about youtube is that anyone can upload a video, so you could always obtain one of these machines from Japan and make a new video featuring the things that are more interesting to you.
Q2) Where do I get one?
A) Mine came from a Japanese auction site
Q3) Have you heard about the new blank tape from NAC?
A) Yes I've been following the progress for a couple of years now ever since it was first mentioned on the Tapeheads.net forums. I don't record loads of tapes though and I've got a few dozen chrome and metal tapes that will more than likely see me out.
Q4) Have you seen the new Tascam 202 Mk VII (aka Teac W-1200) Cassette deck - will you be reviewing it?
A) I do know about it but I won't be reviewing it as unfortunately there is no company left making anything other than low-end cassette mechanisms. All current machines use the same component - whether the machine comes from Sony or Toshiba (like the boomboxes I tested) or Tascam, they buy the same third party cassette mechanism. There's therefore little point testing the Tascam deck as I'd really just be just re-testing something I've already covered in other videos.
The (almost) 40 year old mechanism in the Technics M1 is still better than anything made today. If you want a new deck - get an old deck - but try and get one that someone has serviced recently. As you could see in this video - replacing the belts in some machines is not an easy task.
Q5) Will you be covering (insert format here)?
A) I hope to cover every format that has sufficient interest to it, at some point in the future. It's going to take me a long time to get through them all, but that's the long term plan. I don't have any intentions to stop making videos in the foreseeable future, so keep watching and hopefully I'll get to it in the end.

A) It will come out at some point in the future
Q7) Where are the puppets?
A) I only make an outro with them if I have a good idea for one. Sometimes it takes weeks before I get an idea. In the meantime, all their old clips are still available in the ‘Comedy’ playlist on this channel.
Q8 (new) Why does it have a microphone when it can't record?
A) See 12:16 - It's an intercom. AKA 'Hotline' on the Walkmans.
Q9 (new) What did it cost when it was new?
A) 29,800 Yen - You can see this on-screen briefly at 01:47 at the top just below the word Co-deck.
The first Walkman cost 33,000 yen in 1979 (which was $200 USD).

It's portable the way the first portable computers were. You have a handle and everything you need to use it at your destination.
It's not "mobile" though, as those devices could be used when rollerskating backwards through piles of traffic cones.
Yeah, but I would say regular boomboxes are more like the luggables of the time. This awkwardly falls somewhere in-between. Not quite Walkman portable, but more portable than boomboxes.

Another great video. And I'm so glad you're the type that doesn't listen to every little comment, and change to accommodate them. Some UA-camrs have a habit of being all wishy-washy, and going whatever way the wind blows in the comment section. Instead of simply having faith in themselves. It's not that there aren't some decent ideas. It's just there's a reason you get all your viewers in the first place, and deviating from that isn't a very good idea. I like to know I'm getting you, and your style when a new video comes out. Not the style of the people that complained the most/loudest. Consistency is very important IMO.
Thank you very much. I love seeing all these rare things like this. It always blows my mind that even though I'm a big tech geek, and was alive when most of this was made. I still never heard of it. I could of course go search this out myself, but it's much more fun waiting for and watching these videos. Besides I like to spend all my time researching HiFi gear only. Which takes enough time as it is anyway. This stuff is basically endless it seems. Such a great hobby.
When I lived in Australia a friend of mine went to Japan on holiday and came back with the M2, and had it plugged into his amp in his bedroom, as for the Technics M205 tape deck I had one for 16 years, it was an excellent unit.
In 1966/67 I tried skiing with a Sony TC-100 casette recorder strapped over my shoulder with full size headphones.
It was too bulky, and I recall mentioning to my brother that if they could just shrink it, it would be a great seller.

Made by Philips- they did a very good range of test gear. I used to have one of their video pattern generators when I lined up video walls and projectors.
I have a Technics RS-M260, with a nearly identical control system like this M1 and Rew/Auto play means that if you press REW/REV and PLAY keys together, it rewinds the tape and when it reached the end of the tape, it started playing.
Also, the missing button is indeed for record, but the electronics are missing. The erasing head is not left there by mistake, it also functions as a tape tensioner, it is on a spring that pushes the tape on it. There are TONS of decks from M series that use this mechanics with all sort of variations.
Many people do. Those were good, solid decks. :)

This might have sold well in Japan back in the day. Keep in mind the cities in Japan are one of the most densely populated places on earth. Most apartments in the cities are studios, less than 500 sq ft. Space is at a premium. This looks like a really nice high quality piece of hi-fi but it doesn't take up nearly as much space as a conventional cassette deck. Plus you can move it around your apartment, sit at your desk and listen to it with headphones, listen to it in bed on the night stand with headphones, plug it into your small receiver with speakers if you have one.

rob M. I remember how small i found it. Just bigger than the cassette itself. And the look - we had small transistors radio - but these looked super hi-tech. Sony really was the Apple of the time. Quality, innovation, a brand to show off...
Philippe Clermont The other company that had a futuristic look was Panasonic : I still have their Panapet round radio, got it for a birthday present in about 1972...it looked as if the Star Wars Death Star copied it's shape almost exactly, a few years later.
I also remember various Sci Fi looking, miniature Tv's from Panasonic, and their marketing guys hit the slogan : "Panasonic, Just Slightly Ahead of Our Time." 🚀

For some reason, the first thing that popped into my mind was that Co-Deck stood for Codependent Deck, since you need headphones or a receiver, but I think something like Compact Deck is more likely.

Thanks for the great video as usual from across the pond! When you pressed the rewind fast forward button and it made that chipmunk sound it brought back fond memories of my youth.I grew up in the Walkman days if you ever saw me I had my headphones on!

The flywheel in that tape deck is probably the reason for it being so unhappy with being moved, that kind of weight is easily mucked about with when you move the unit suddenly, bit like if you picked up a turntable and rotated it back & forth, you'd make a mess of the playback of the record... :)

If you can minimise backlash in the gearing....
You can get the same effect with a spinning full size hard drive if you swirl it around running (NOT with a good drive!). The G-Forces slow the platters down and make it unhappy!
Love these videos, it takes me back to a very exciting time from late seventies up to about mid nineties when there was so much innovation and quirky design. I still love tech now and there’s some really interesting gear but back then things were usually new and many companies were there own versions of ideas and gave us some really great, and not so great tech.
Matt I saw that you mention the m205 in the video and I just got one of them as my first deck and it's actually a very nice deck for what I paid 50 dollars (US) of ebay and it worked right out of the box.

Hey Mat - Back in 1980 or 1981, I bought a Technics RS-M14 cassette deck which I'm pretty sure uses the same mechanism. It was not a high-end deck by any means but seeing those buttons immediately took me back to age 15. I saved all I could and bought that deck brand new, probably the first component I ever bought. Thanks for the video and trip down memory lane.

You really have a great taste in music. Your theme’s soundscapes, and theme track at the end, and even the random cassettes and tracks that you use to demo your gear with. ALWAYS really good jams! You could always be a radio DJ. I would expect to hear your taste in music at a great many clubs too. Good cuts and great technologically overwhelming gear! NEVER a dull moment with Mr. Moan!! He's said a few times he doesn't like most of the the music he plays. It's either just used because it doesn't have a content match or because it show cases a wide variety of sounds. Outside of that he doesn't think about it much.

Better quality cassette deck than ones built today. Seems stuff built now are poor quality copies of older tech, such as Crosley Cruiser and fake boom boxes.
Fake cheap Chinese boom boxes today like X-BASS (more like X-FLAT) I bought from Fry's couple years back & featured on 8-track guy! 😃👍😎

Great review! I was the proud owner of a M205 tape deck and it was the most reliable cassette mechanism I have ever owned. One of the features I enjoyed the most about these mechanisms is when searching for music on a cassette, when you fast forwarded or rewinded the tape, you didn’t have to push the stop button before you pushed on the play button. I’m sure yours works the same way as well. Cheers!

Techmoan, among the million reasons I love you and your channel, the top reason will always be how many obscure audio devices/components you introduce me to, (that I NEVER would have found without you) that get immediately added to my “holy grail list,” I never knew how much stuff I needed before I discovered your channel years ago
With that said, I can’t believe how parallel our taste is. I was always under the impression that the 80s flashy, obnoxious tech that I loved was “plastic crap” from audio/tech snobs, but you made me realize its perfectly normal to prioritize the light-up “flashy bits” of these devices.

Did you ever do a video of your Sony Pressman Mat? That would be interesting. (Searched around, couldn’t find anything)
Look under TCD5 or TCD5 Pro- I think that's what he uses.
My ways to fix those volume sliders is to douse it in rubbing alcohol. It works very well! Just get a q-tip doused in rubbing alcohol and push it under the slider and move it around. It takes a few try's but I have fixed my Atari paddle, Gameboy Dmg volume, and my cassette deck!
I imagine once the tracks get too worn and scratched it becomes less effective. I've replaced pots on mixing decks that were too far gone.

My guess is that only a wire or two needs to be connected to enable the record function.
I don't think the electronics for recording are present, only for playback. Those transports were fitted with a rec/play head and an erase head as a standard. It would have cost more to create a seperate production line or remove the erase head. That's why it's still present but doesn't have a function.
Nice little machine, looks like it would be ideal to have on a desk these days for listening to and capturing old cassette tape recordings. Small footprint and good quality.

This "Rewind Auto Play" business is referring to the fact that, in the middle of a tape, when you press the Play AND Rewind keys together, the machine will rewind the tape until it reaches the beginning, and it WILL then automatically start playing it...

Seth Andersen Context matters, I guess. If someone’s trying to ask me something while I’m wearing headphones and I tell them to hold on for a second because I can’t hear them, most people won’t really jump to the conclusion that a passthrough is recording them.

An alternative would be to paint that spot with some orange day-glo enamel paint. Using a bit of masking tape you could get it nice and squared off.

I don't know why a lot of companies use metric for what is an imperial headphone jack. It's 1/4".
Obviously in the UK we changed to metric a long time ago, but 6.35mm just sounds ridiculous instead of saying quarter inch, which is the size that it was originally specced at.
Because nearly the entire world uses the metric system. Only 3 states ditn't. Better one universal system, than many others.
We normally refer to those sorts of plugs as 3.5mm & 6.5mm. Plus the rarer 2.5mm
While I agree that metric is technically the superior system, when something is specified in imperial units, then imperial is the right system to use for specifying that something.
Those of us who are into electronics design (either hobby or professional) know it's a mixed-up crazy world full of 0.1" pitch connectors and large ICs, with traces specified in mils (derived from the inch, not the mm), while LEDs are either 3 or 5mm diameter, and (nearly) all SMD parts are in portions of a mm, all of which is placed on a PCB that is often manufactured at a cost of so much per sq. in., and held into its enclosure with M3 screws.
While you CAN try to be a purist and convert all measurements into the one system of your choice, it leads to inaccuracies and cumbersome measurements. Everyone is just so much better off using the right (native) system from the get-go, as ideologically putrid as that might be. Such is life. Neither one is going anywhere, so you may as well get used to it.
SigmaDraconis87 No one calls the .357 Magnum a 9.67mm Magnum no matter if "everyone" uses metric and it would be mathematically correct. It's a Quarter Inch jack for the same reason a .357 or a .38 is still called that. It's the original specification. People in the US (who supposedly don't know metric, LOL) never say .354 Luger instead of 9mm Luger either.
They call that only in the US.I know many countries that use the metric name for the weapons. If you want to use the the one it's ok for you, but the USA are not the world. So metric system is official. Especially in the industrial and scientific field. Besides this video isn't meant to be fo the UK or US viewer only. For them the metric system is the right one. Most of them don't know inch units or other imperial units. So it's better to use the metric system

Had an old Technics receiver/tuner I picked up at a garage sale when I was 12, left it behind during a move when I was 23 and didn't notice until 2 weeks later because the previous place was a temporary move and I never set it up, I still miss it. Also had a Sony cassette deck I found at a flea market when I was 14, that thing was awesome! It had soft buttons for everything and made any tape sound good, one of the belts broke when I was 17 and I tossed it in the dumpster, what a fool I was back then.

I remember having a Technics RS-TR313 back in the day. Dual autoreverse decks, Dolby C noise reduction & HX Pro made a great deck.
It had reliability issues, there is a small gear inside made of some soft material that is prone to breaking, preventing one of the takeup reels from working. It ate (and folded) one of my tapes the first time it broke.
Wow seeing that M205 brought back memories...that was my deck as a teenager...along with a Technics receiver and turntable.
