    Thanks, helpful for setting back button focus on a6400.
    But actually, I wish someone would explain how it works exactly. Do you press it and let go to focus - and lock focus, or do you have to hold the button down do lock focus? No one explains, and so far I can't get it focus lock regardless.

      Hi JRE. If the lever is set to AF/MF and you press the button it toggles between autofocus and manual focus but you need to keep the button held down. You can still easily change this using the FB button or on the lens if there is a AF/MF switch. If you move the lever down to AEL and then press the button it will now lock your exposure so that you can reframe your shot without any exposure changes, this only works in the auto modes and since I normally shoot in manual I rarely use it. I only recommend setting it to the two buttons because if it's only set to AF/MF but gets knocked in your bag/case to AEL it might take a few shots before you realise that the AF is not working. I've done this before a few times myself! Hope that explains things better. All the best, Tim

      Hi JRE. Just noticed that your question changed a little and UA-cam doesn't notify regarding edits unfortunately so sorry for the slow reply! To answer this one yes I'm afraid you have to hold it down to lock focus. It basically works exactly the same as the shutter button does when you half press. All the best, Tim

      @@AlphaShooters I still can't wrap my brain around this. Does this only work in manual mode and not aperture/shutter priority? And when using it, must you keep holding the button or just press it once to lock the focus? I'm a little hesitant to change the functionality of these buttons because I do often switch between AF & MF, so how would I do that if I disable this button (if the lens doesn't have an AF/MF switch)? Why would be the argument for essentially trashing the designed function of that switch? And, does this make sense to even do if you're shooting handheld or is it only useful when using a tripod and taking longer exposures?
      Edit: Lastly, one tutorial I came across advised to turn off Pre-AF, which you did not, citing that it defeats the purpose of BBF. Is there any reason why you left that on?

    I have never been able to wrap my mind around back button focus but, then again; I have problems walking and chewing gum at the same time. OTOH with my two favorite lenses (Sony 85mm f/1.8 and 70-200mm f/4 G OSS) I have assigned the focus hold button on the lens to AF ON. This just seems more natural to me. I wish that all of my lenses for the A6400 were equipped with focus hold buttons. Since the A6400 has full time Eye-AF, I don't need to press another button to activate Eye-AF... Works for me!

      Hey Richard, I tend to use bbf more on my full-frame cameras than on the smaller a6xxx series where I find that the button is a little on the small side. Using the focus hold button on the lens instead is definitely a very good tip, thanks! :) Two of my favourite lenses as well! Although I've just picked up the Sigma 16mm and 30mm 1.4 DC DN lenses which are super sharp! All the best, Tim

    Hi! I have a Sony a6400 and 18-105 f.4 lens. During video recording I have a problem with AF during slowly zoom in and zoom out.
    The focus is very unstable and the image is flickering, slipping .. I sent to you a link that you can see that problem that I don't know how to solve.

      I can't view the link I'm afraid. Is this possibly just focus hunting? You'll see this around the edges of the frame if you are shooing a video of a relatively still subject. For my UA-cam videos when I'm on camera and sitting I'll typically use manual focus to avoid this. If this isn't what you are experiencing I'd recommend contacting Sony support for further help.

    • @AlphaShooters

      Yes, it is. The autofocus isn't quite as fast as the Sony 100-400 but it's a very good lens for the price. Tim

    One big problem if you use this method. It works flawless in M-mode , but when you are in S- mode or A- mode using AF-C, AEL does not lock anymore. Now you have to set another customkey for AEL-hold. So now you have to focus on your subject, press another customkey to lock AEL , recompose and then press the shutter button. Or am I missing something?

    • @AlphaShooters
      @AlphaShooters  4 роки тому

      This is true Leon. You'd want to keep the AEL button programmed for AEL in this case and just assignAF-On to AF/MF or another button.

Any ideas?

    • @AlphaShooters
      @AlphaShooters  5 років тому +1

      You're welcome Aaron. You need to assign "focus standard" to a custom key. This will then allow you to move the focus point. I'd recommend assigning it to the trash can because then if you click it once you can move the focus point around, twice and it moves it back to the centre. Hope that helps!
