It's really generally not a good idea to put solder on contacts that are meant to be inserted and removed since the solder can rub off onto the internal contacts of the connector and damage it or cause conductivity problems later, it's better to just have a slighty thicker board made, SD2SP2 is open source so you should be able to find the Gerber files and there are many low cost PCB printing services available.
To be fair, once installed, the intent is that the SD2SP2 Pro will be a permanent modification with only the SD card being regularly removed. Of course, if you’re modding your GameCube, there’s a good chance you’ll be modding it again down the line.
And as soon as someone produces a thicker PCB I'll get one. The advantage here is that it won't be taken out and reinserted over and over like the original sd2sp2 because the SD card can be removed independently. So while I agree with what you're saying I don't think it's a huge risk in this case
@@101fng that gives me a good idea, they should totally make a version like this but instead of having a plug with the intent of soldering it to the motherboard directly for the DOL-101 models that lack the serial port plug.
I recently saw an update for the picoboot and the instructions mentioned that you should desolder the 3v3 line from the GC to protect the pico from damage, due to the pico trying to put out 3.3v into the GC during the flashing process. Well I thought that's annoying and came up with a simple solution; Solder in line with the 3.3v wire a schottky diode with the black stripe facing the pico and that will prevent the pico from trying to send voltage into the GC during updates. I used a 30v 0.2A diode from vishay and it works perfectly, meaning that I no longer have to desolder the wire during every update. The 3.3v is now ~3v instead, but the pico is perfectly happy with that.
I had the same with my SD2SP2 Pro, i'm still glad that I bought the pro though. You can still solder on both sides as you can use some sandpaper and gently rub until the fit is just right and remember to clean it before each attempt.
