Hi guys. We hope you liked this video :) Do you have any other tips on how to make friends, especially abroad? Let us know down below in the comments. We love to read you. Best regards and see you next week!
Let me say this.. I've been in Switzerland for 3 years now. I learned Swiss German and now can speak it fluently (yes it's possible) in a way that locals are surprised when I speak. Moreover I'm also fluent in French, English and Italian and am very outgoing. I made some Swiss friends in the beginning but it turned out to be complicated as they didn't have time that much or wanted to plan a daily hiking trip 2 month in advance. At work I haven´t made a single friend. I went to some meetup, that's where I got to know a couple of people which I´m still friends with. But still I have just one swiss friend and just a few friends in total. For being here for so long and being integrated that much I find it very very difficult to build up friendhips here. People are very friendly but it often feels unimpossible to break the ice. The most funny thing is that swiss people are the only once I know who think Germans are open people. They are not! But compared to swiss people they probably are. :) By the way, in the french part and italian part it might be a little easier to socialise but keep in mind Switzerland remains Switzerland. I love everything about Switzerland, it's a great place but if socialising is a big thing for you think twice to move here.
Hey there we want to thank you very much for sharing such an interesting and insightful comment with us. We can totally understand you! We hope that this sunny summer might accelerate your finding friends situation! Best wishes ✨❤️🍀
In the end finding friends is mostly on the person seeking. If you are a great human that is fun to be around you will find friends. If you are bad company then don’t wonder people don’t want to hang out with you. I have lived in several countries and there are always people who just can’t fit in and find friends.
I am Swiss. The one with the 2 months in advance is in my opinion just an excuse. These people just want to appear super busy and that they have so many friends. This got worse and worse with social media!! I bet it's a little bit like that in other countries too, but not as bad as in Switzerland. I organised a weekend trip with many people (Swiss and foreigner). I planed 2 months in advance. Guess what, I got critisized by Swiss people for the short frame of organisation. If I had not my elderly parents I would move to another country...
I love your videos because, in addition to being interesting and useful, you show that you are polite, respectful and have a sense of humor. Thank you!
When I first moved to Switzerland I couldn't makes friends with Swiss people but I made multiple friends from foreign countries! Thought I'd be lonely but I made a lot of online friends and met them and hung out with them! Love it here
this video gave me real hope, you guys!! thank you! 🤗🤗 it is interesting that at some point a Swiss woman said the expats tend to hang out in groups and therefore harder to get into, while the whole time we, expats think the same about the Swiss :)) so I guess being more open will not hurt when putting yourself put there - be it in a class, club, sport event, etc.
I had an interview with a company in Zürich last week and one of the interviewers told me that if Swedes has a 2 meter rule (for not interacting with other people) then the Swiss have a 5 meter rule! That's how introvert Swiss are (apparently). Still, I go clubbing, I like day-raves (dancing), I'm social, speak german and I am sort of an extrovert, so I see this opportunity, should I get this job, as a "challenge accepted" to make Swiss friends... 😁😅 Thanks for the video guys, you're awesome!
Great video guys! You quality of content is always so high! We highly appreciate it and we all want to see your channel grow! I already recommended your channel to some others. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks so much for your sweet and kind comment. We are super happy to know you are finding our videos helpful. Best of luck in your Swiss adventure!! ✨
The person at 9:02 mentions a place, does somebody know where to find this or how I can google it? I can’t find it because my German is really bad hahaha
I'm Swiss (but not from Zurich so I only know it through googling). At this exact timestamp the person talks about "Zwischennutzung" which is just a general term for some place that is temporary available for hiring (and cheap) thus it is often used for cultural activities. Later the person mentions a specific place "Zentralwäscherei Zürich" which can be found by googling (I cannot post a link on YT unfortunately)
Hello the place he mentions is Zentralwäscherei. We have never been there ourselves neither 😅😃 So we also always learn something new though these videos 😋
I came in Zurich last year from Ukraine and I didn't expect, that it'll be so difficult to make friends here. I'm attending intensive Deutschkurs and can speak some German already. But again, the language barrier is still there, cause people speak Swissdeutsch in normal life and don't necessarily want to switch all the time. A lot of times I feel discouraged to go to events with Swiss people, cause I don't want to be that person, that forces them to switch from their native language.
Hello thanks a lot for your comment! We are sorry to hear that but can relate! Keep positive and place yourself out there things will fall into place in long term ✨🍀
Don't worry about making Swiss people switch from their native language. Swiss people are often interested in hearing about other countries and different experiences!
Ik that feeling about having to make everyone else switch up to accommodate you. And at the same time I could never connect or understand to participate in real 'Swiss-German' convos no matter how much I tried or wanted to
Oh god. I think I told in one of the other comments, my wife and I are moving to Zurih in a couple of months. Sounds like making friends will be hard!!!!
Thanks so much for your comment. It is always challenging to make friends abroad, but very rewarding when you achieve it. Best of luck in your Swiss move!! 🥰
Great job with this one. Curious if you were able to make new friends following those advices. How about starting a meet-up club? You get to increase your own following and help others connect
I hardly think that’s a statement anyone seriously considers to be true. My friend group is ultra diverse and so is most people’s I know but I live in an urban area, things might be different in the countryside
No hards feelings towards Switzerland, cause I live here since 9 years and I like it. In the meantime I am fully integrated, I speak Swiss German, joined Vereine, work for a swiss company and I am the only foreigner in the office. I always had a very swiss hobby, mountains. I also organise sometimes social events and join events organised by the others. I have few international friends and many international acquaintances. Swiss friends? Zero. At the beginning I was telling myself that it's my fault cause I dont speak the language, but now I know it's the fault of the Swiss. They are simply not likable and very cold.
Thanks so much for this thoughtful and honest comment! We are always happy to get to know the thoughts of various people. Wishing you a great weekend 🍀🎈🚀
@@GangdamStyle20 Maybe that's true. Whenever I am around Swiss group of friends all they talk about is buying stuff or trips, that's it. It is always a big topic, even with elderly people. And if for some reason you don't do that as much they just stop talking to you.
Hello thank you very much for your comment. I get often the question if I am from Sweden or classic from Germany when introducing myself to someone new 😋🧐
I think we are living in 2023 and a lot of immigration as well as emigration is happening. So anyone could have any nationality regardless of their appearance.
Lol the guy who recommends asking for a lighter to make friends! Too many people here smoke, that's one downside of living in Zurich. Otherwise it's my favorite city in the world! Thanks for this video Jan and Claudia!
I removed a comment I've just posted feeling it was too harsh, in reference to how social media is turning human beings into cyborgs. I like you guys and I felt bad leaving a negative remark here. My apologies 😟
Hey there, thanks for your comment! We appreciate your support 🚀 I don’t think your comment before was very negative, just an opinion you had and shared ✨💯 Thanks very much for the positive support and have a good start into the week!
11:40 me as German... and she replies: learn the language...haha, maybe she was nervous and didn't understand the question properly but anyway, let's agree, it's not easy to make friends, especially the older you get.

You're kidding?
What are my chances of moving solo to Zurich? I would have to mentors as I was told, And that's all I know for now.

Also thanks to Mario, who commented before and explained it well ☀️
I lived in 3 other countries and can confirm that in Switzerland it is more difficult to make new friends - especially when it comes to Swiss people.

I would say it’s nearly impossible for POCs to make Swiss friends :(
Hey there thanks for your comment and sharing your honest opinion 🙌 Have a wonderful weekend!

Do you recommend any app to meet people?
Hey there, thanks for the comment. We have been using bumble and meetup :-)

I guess the way you reach absolute conclusions tells more about you than you think. I can imagine it is hard for you to find friends in general.
Switzerland is one of the most diffcult countries in this regards. I know I am Swiss myself. I think the reason is it is all about status and money...

Zurich is multicultural, you have more chance to meet ex Yugoslavian, German or Italian people then a Swiss
